Why this lesson matters · เหตุผลที่เรียนบทนี้

For learners: Understand a short health message by identifying the problem, two pieces of advice and the next safe action.

For teachers: The lesson moves from prediction to gist and detail listening, evidence checking, clarification transfer and an independent final listening task.

Your goal

Why this listening skill matters

  • You can focus on the information that controls the next step.

1Predict the message

Use the clues to predict what information will matter.

sore throatcoughtwo daysrestwaterpharmacistget worsetrouble breathing
STUDENT TASK
  1. Group the clues into problem, advice, and extra help.
  2. Choose two clues you expect to hear together.
  3. Say one prediction: “The speaker will probably advise…”
Teacher Help

Keep this fast. Accept reasonable predictions; do not confirm the story or teach every word.

2First listen · find the gist

Listen once without reading. Do not try to catch every word.

Audio 1 · British English · 33 seconds
STUDENT TASK
  1. What is the main problem?
  2. Is the message mainly a diagnosis, everyday advice, or an emergency instruction?
  3. What is the speaker’s main purpose?
Check the gist

The person has a sore throat, a cough and tiredness. The message gives everyday advice plus clear conditions for getting professional or emergency help. It does not diagnose the cause.

Teacher Help

Play once at normal speed. If the learner misses the gist, ask which three symptom words they caught; do not replay yet.

3Second listen · catch the details

Listen again and complete the three-part message map.

Audio 1 · second listening
Problem

Symptoms: __________
Time: __________
Important negative detail: __________

Advice and action

Everyday actions: __________ + __________
Who can help: __________
If worse: __________

STUDENT TASK
  1. Write keywords only.
  2. Compare answers with a partner or teacher.
  3. Mark one answer you are least sure about.
Answer check

Symptoms: sore throat, cough, tiredness · Time: two days · Negative detail: no chest pain or trouble breathing · Actions: rest, drink enough water, avoid close contact · Help: pharmacist; healthcare professional if worse; emergency help for trouble breathing or chest pain.

Teacher Help

Replay once only. Ask for keywords, not full written sentences. The expected evidence is problem, two advice points and the condition that changes the next action.

4Check the evidence

Open the transcript only after you have committed your answers.

Audio 1 transcript

Here is the advice from the community health desk. You said you have had a sore throat and a cough for two days, and you feel tired. You do not have chest pain or trouble breathing. For now, rest, drink enough water, and avoid close contact with other people while you feel unwell. A pharmacist can help you choose suitable symptom relief and explain how to use it safely. If your symptoms get worse, contact a healthcare professional. If you develop trouble breathing or chest pain, seek emergency medical help.

STUDENT TASK
  1. Find the sentence that describes the problem.
  2. Underline two advice verbs.
  3. Circle the two if conditions and explain how the action changes.
  4. Correct one answer from Stage 3 if needed.
Teacher Help

Ask “Which exact words changed your answer?” Do not turn transcript checking into translation of every line.

5Transfer the listening into speech

Explain the message clearly and ask for one important clarification.

Explain: The main problem is… The advice is to… If the symptoms get worse, the next step is…

Clarify: Could you repeat the last step? · Do you mean I should contact a pharmacist now? · What should the person do if the symptoms get worse?

STUDENT TASK
  1. Summarise Audio 1 in three sentences: problem, advice, next action.
  2. Ask one clarification question.
  3. Answer the question using only information from the audio.
Teacher Help

Model one clarification prompt, then roleplay the health-desk speaker. Do not add new medical advice; keep every answer inside the audio evidence.

6Final Practice · listen and choose the safe next step

Listen to a new follow-up message. Complete the task without opening the transcript first.

Audio 2 · American English · 31 seconds
FINAL LISTENING TASK
  1. What changed from yesterday to today?
  2. What should Sam do next?
  3. Why should Sam not guess the cause?
  4. Name two conditions that require emergency medical help.
  5. Give a three-sentence spoken summary without reading.
GISTIdentifies that the cough improved and then became worse.
DETAILNames the prompt professional-contact advice and two emergency signs.
ACTIONStates the next step without adding unsupported advice.
Open after your final answer · Audio 2 transcript

This is a follow-up message for Sam. Yesterday, Sam said the cough was getting better. Today, the cough has returned and feels worse, and Sam is unusually weak. The next step is not to guess the cause. Sam should contact a healthcare professional promptly and explain that the symptoms improved and then became worse. If Sam also has difficulty breathing, chest pain, confusion, or another emergency warning sign, Sam should seek emergency medical help immediately.

Teacher Help

Play Audio 2 once for gist and once for details. Do not pause or supply words. Score only the learner’s independent answers and spoken summary.

Teacher scoring guide

0 · Not yet

Main problem or action is not identified after one neutral prompt.

1 · With support

Understands part of the message but needs replay, choices or supplied language.

2 · Independent
