Lesson structure · Progress path and 30-minute route
Your progress path: organise meaning and use → listen and identify → retrieve without cards → create and choose → final use and retry.
Teacher Lesson Plan · Read before class
| Time | Teacher does | Student does | Evidence |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0–6 | Teaches twelve Core words through meaning, use and one example. | Connects each word to its group and one useful phrase. | Meaning links |
| 6–11 | Plays Joanna and Amy once each; replays only missed evidence. | Identifies Core words in two scenes. | Recognition |
| 11–16 | Closes the word cards and prompts by category only. | Retrieves eight words and repairs one weak category. | Independent retrieval |
| 16–22 | Provides changing places and conditions. | Builds descriptions and chooses a useful action. | Accurate use |
| 22–30 | Scores the first complete attempt and requests one focused retry. | Retrieves, describes, answers why and improves. | VR/FP 0–2 |
Feedback rule: Do not read the cards aloud as a list. Let the learner retrieve first; correct one high-value word or phrase only after the complete attempt.
1. Organise twelve Core words by meaning and use
- Say the word and its group.
- Connect it to the short meaning.
- Use the example frame with one true or imaginary detail.
It is sunny by the river. I can see a bird, so I should bring water.
with bright sun · It is sunny today.
with a lot of rain · It is rainy near the forest.
with strong moving air · The beach is windy.
moving natural water · We are by the river.
a large area of trees · A deer is in the forest.
land beside the sea · The beach is sunny.
an animal with wings · I can see two birds.
a large wild animal · A deer is near the river.
an animal with a shell · Do not touch the turtle.
take water with you · It is sunny, so bring water.
put on a jacket · It is rainy, so wear a jacket.
move carefully · The path is wet, so walk slowly.
Extension words · open after the Core words are secure
Weather: cloudy · warm · cool Places: hill · lake · field Animals: rabbit · fish Conditions: dry · wet · slippery
How to run Stage 1
Teach the twelve Core words only. Ask the learner to show meaning with a scene or action; pronunciation repetition alone is not enough. Keep Extension closed unless Core retrieval is secure.
2. Listen and identify the Core words
Listen before opening the transcript. Record the words you hear in four groups: weather, place, animal and action.
Scene 1 · By the river
Engduo Audio · Joanna · American EnglishTranscript and answer · open after listening
Today is sunny and warm by the river. A deer stands in the grass, and two birds fly above the trees. The path is dry, so we can walk safely.
Core answer: sunny · river · deer · bird
Scene 2 · Near the forest
Engduo Audio · Amy · British EnglishTranscript and answer · open after listening
Near the forest, the sky is cloudy and cool. Light rain is falling on the hill. A rabbit is under a tree, and the ground is wet. Take a jacket and walk slowly.
Core answer: forest · rainy · wear a jacket · walk slowly
How to run Stage 2
Ask for the four categories before checking. Replay only the missed phrase and keep the transcript closed until the learner commits.
3. Retrieve the Core words without the cards
Close Stage 1. Do not look at the Core cards during the first attempt.
- Say at least two items from each group.
- Use four retrieved words in two short sentences.
- Open Stage 1 only to check missing words, then close it and retry.
Success here: eight accurate Core words without the cards.
How to run Stage 3
Prompt only with the category name. After the first attempt, show one missing item for five seconds, close it and ask for immediate retrieval again.
4. Create descriptions and choose a useful action
It is sunny. A deer is near the water. What should you bring?
It is rainy and the path is wet. How should you walk?
It is windy. You can see a turtle. What should you avoid?
Choose a real or imaginary place and add weather, an animal and an action.
How to run Stage 4
Accept different safe answers when the conditions support them. Require four Core words and one reason; do not supply a full sentence.
Final practice: Retrieve and describe one natural place
Your task: First, name eight Core words without looking. Then choose a real or imaginary natural place and use at least four Core words to say where it is, what the weather is like, one animal you can see and one useful action. Answer: “Why is that action useful?”
Success target: VR = 2 and FP = 2 after one focused retry.
VR · Vocabulary Range
0 · Not yet Retrieves fewer than five Core words after one category prompt.
1 · With support Retrieves five to seven Core words or needs the cards once.
2 · Independent Retrieves at least eight Core words without the cards and uses four accurately.
FP · Functional Performance
0 · Not yet The listener cannot identify the place, conditions or action.
1 · With support Describes the scene and action after one prompt or supplied frame.
2 · Independent Clearly describes place, weather, animal and useful action, then answers why.
How to run Stage 5
Score the complete first attempt. Give one VR success and one FP correction, then retry only the weaker 20–30 seconds.
