At first, ___.
The Unexpected Journey
Read an original travel story for sequence, turning point, character decision, and evidence-based inference before retelling the journey.
Your goal
By the end of this lesson, you can identify turning points and retell the journey.

The Unexpected Journey
Mali expected a quiet train ride to the coast. She had booked a small guesthouse and planned to spend the afternoon walking near the sea. Forty minutes after departure, however, the train stopped outside a small town. A storm had damaged the track ahead, and nobody knew when the line would reopen.
At first, Mali waited for an official update. Then she heard two other passengers comparing bus routes on a map. They had found a bus leaving from the town square, but they needed one more person to make the shared taxi to the station affordable. Mali checked the route, asked how long the transfer would take, and decided to join them.
The group missed the original check-in time, but they called the guesthouse and arrived before dark. During the journey, they shared food, stories, and travel advice. Looking back, Mali realised that the disruption had changed her plan, but her careful questions and decision to cooperate had turned the delay into the most memorable part of the trip.

Instead of waiting alone, she joined two passengers who were organising a shared bus. The decision changed the delay into a memorable day.
How to run Stage 1
Confirm the observable outcome and connect it to one realistic learner need.
2. Build useful language
Choose the phrases that help you complete the task; do not memorise a full script.
The turning point came when ___.
This suggests that ___.
The character decided to ___ because ___.
As a result, ___.
Looking back, ___.
How to run Stage 2
Use the visual and first audio or text for meaning before explaining language.
3. Rehearse with support
Practise the decisions, evidence, listening, or language moves that make the final task successful.
- Separate explicit details from an inference.
- Choose the sentence that supports each inference.
- Track how the plan changes after the turning point.
How to run Stage 3
Select only the useful-language items needed for this learner and this task.
4. Complete the communication task
Exchange information, solve a problem, create a text, or reach a decision with a real outcome.
Read the original Engduo story in five short sections, arrange the event cards, and decide which character choice most changed the outcome.
How to run Stage 4
Run the supported rehearsal without reading every instruction aloud.
5. Perform, receive feedback, and retry
Complete the task with keywords only, receive focused feedback, and repeat the weakest part.
Retell the story in 90 seconds from six keywords, then answer two evidence questions.
Retry: Repeat once with clearer meaning, stronger evidence, more accurate listening, or less support.
How to run Stage 5
Run the main task: Read the original Engduo story in five short sections, arrange the event cards, and decide which character choice most changed the outcome.
Exit check
Complete this without reading a model: Identify the turning point, explain one decision with evidence, and retell the main sequence coherently.
Success looks like: The retelling preserves the cause-and-effect chain and every inference points to a detail in the text.
Evidence: reading · Repeat the weakest part once after one meaning-focused and one language-focused correction at most.
READ · Reading Comprehension
2: Finds and interprets the required written evidence accurately.
1: Demonstrates the skill after one focused prompt, correction or self-repair.
0: Cannot yet demonstrate the skill clearly enough to complete the stated outcome.
VR · Vocabulary Resource
2: Uses suitable target vocabulary naturally in an original message.
1: Demonstrates the skill after one focused prompt, correction or self-repair.
0: Cannot yet demonstrate the skill clearly enough to complete the stated outcome.
Use these scores after the independent attempt. Record one recurring need in the Engduo app when lesson-result fields become available.
How to run Stage 6
Record focused evidence, give one meaning-focused and one language-focused correction at most, repeat the weakest part, and complete the exit check.

Teacher guide
30-minute must-do route
- Confirm the observable outcome and connect it to one realistic learner need.
- Use the visual and first audio or text for meaning before explaining language.
- Select only the useful-language items needed for this learner and this task.
- Run the supported rehearsal without reading every instruction aloud.
- Run the main task: Read the original Engduo story in five short sections, arrange the event cards, and decide which character choice most changed the outcome.
- Record focused evidence, give one meaning-focused and one language-focused correction at most, repeat the weakest part, and complete the exit check.
60-minute extension
- Compare two plausible interpretations and decide which has stronger evidence.
- Change the role, information, listener, or constraint so the learner transfers the skill rather than repeating the same answer.
- Compare the first and second performance and record one specific improvement.
Make it easier
Provide five section headings and a four-event timeline.
Make it harder
Compare two plausible interpretations and decide which has stronger evidence.
Likely difficulty
The learner may retell every small detail or state an unsupported motive as fact.
Correction priority
Prioritise turning point, causal sequence, and text evidence.
Thai support rule
Keep the Thai panel closed unless examples, visuals, replay, reformulation, and simpler English do not allow progress. Explain only the key distinction, then return to English.
Progress record
Score READ, VR from 0–2 and record one recurring need from: sequence, evidence, retelling.
Retry
Give one meaning-focused correction and one language-focused correction at most, then ask for a second attempt with fewer visible prompts.
