Firm evidence, collaborative delivery
Identify the firm proposition and the language that shares the decision.

Separate evidence commitment from relationship management, then deliver the same recommendation appropriately to three listeners.
For learners: Separate evidence commitment from interpersonal distance, repair stance mismatches and deliver one recommendation for three relationships.
For teachers: This C2 capstone uses two independent stance axes so the learner can preserve evidence accuracy while adapting authority, participation and distance.
Place twelve modal choices on two stance scales, distinguish evidence from politeness effects, repair five mismatches, and deliver one recommendation for three relationships.
Advanced modal stance is not one strong–weak scale. Expert speakers keep evidence accurate while adjusting authority, participation, responsibility and distance for each relationship.
Always ask two separate questions: “What does this say about the evidence?” and “What does this do between the speakers?” The final proof keeps one proposition stable across three relationships.
| Stage | Teacher move | Evidence to collect |
|---|---|---|
| 1 · Map | Place twelve choices on evidence and relationship axes. | Twelve two-axis placements |
| 2 · Separate | Explain proposition effect before interpersonal effect. | Six two-part explanations |
| 3 · Repair | Diagnose and repair five mismatches. | Five repaired messages |
| 4 · Adapt | Keep the evidence invariant across peer, senior and client. | Three listener plans |
| 5 · Transfer | Use Australian and British recordings to recover two-axis stance. | Two listening maps |
| 6 · Perform | Score MEAN/FORM/USE, set one target and retry. | Three deliveries + retry |
Judge evidence strength and interpersonal distance separately before interpreting the modal choice.
| Message | Evidence effect | Relationship effect |
|---|---|---|
| We must change the sequence. | strong necessity/conclusion | direct; authority may be assumed |
| We should probably change the sequence. | recommended and likely beneficial | collaborative, still confident |
| We might want to change the sequence. | proposal remains open | softened suggestion |
| Would it be worth changing the sequence? | evidence position is backgrounded | invites the listener to evaluate |
Prevent a single “strong–weak” line. A message may be evidence-firm but interpersonally careful, or evidence-tentative but socially direct.
Explain what each modal construction changes in the proposition and in the relationship.
| Construction | Main evidence/commitment effect | Main interpersonal effect |
|---|---|---|
| must / cannot | high commitment or strong boundary | can sound authoritative without shared grounding |
| should / ought to | recommended course based on judgement | can advise, pressure or collaborate depending on frame |
| may / might / could | opens possibility | can soften a proposal but does not automatically make it polite |
| would / could + question | often leaves the proposition open | creates distance or invites participation |
Ask two questions in order: “What does this say about the proposition?” and “What does this do between the speakers?” Do not accept one answer for both.
Keep the evidence message accurate while adapting authority, responsibility and distance.
| Context | Mismatched wording | Repair target |
|---|---|---|
| Peer; strong shared evidence | You might perhaps want to consider checking it. | collaborative but not evasive |
| Senior leader; urgent verified risk | You must stop this now. | firm evidence, respectful delivery |
| Client; one weak clue | This definitely must be the cause. | tentative evidence, accountable tone |
| Close teammate; routine suggestion | Would you be so kind as to possibly review it? | natural close-distance request |
| Public recommendation; limitations known | This might be the only acceptable option. | remove evidence contradiction |
Senior leader: “The verified risk means we need to pause now; could we confirm the stop decision together?” · Client: “This may be one cause, but we need a second check before concluding.”
Accept more than one repair when both axes are explained. Avoid equating formality with politeness or indirectness with weak evidence.
Preserve the evidence and action while changing interpersonal distance deliberately.
| Listener | Relationship goal | Language decision |
|---|---|---|
| Close peer | shared problem-solving | direct “we” + collaborative question |
| Senior decision-maker | respect authority without hiding urgency | evidence-led necessity + option framing |
| External client | accountability and reassurance | clear boundary + careful uncertainty + commitment |
Check invariance before elegance. If the learner changes the evidence or action between listeners without a reason, restore the shared proposition first.
Recover evidence commitment and relationship management, then compare the two axes.
Identify the firm proposition and the language that shares the decision.
Track how uncertainty remains visible while responsibility stays clear.
Audio never starts automatically. Accent variety tests transfer, not imitation. Replay the proposition and interpersonal frame separately when the learner collapses the two effects.
Deliver one evidence-stable recommendation three ways and improve one precise mismatch.

Score the first independent attempt across MEAN, FORM and USE. Give one target only: evidence axis, relationship axis, modal framing or listener fit. Keep the original score and record the retry.
You can now keep evidence accurate while adapting authority, participation and interpersonal distance for different listeners. Use the Dynamic Learning Graph below to review and integrate the route.
