Why this lesson matters ·

For learners: You are ready to move from discussing connotation to constructing or challenging a complex judgement with contradictory evidence and a defensible revision.

For teachers: The six-stage mastery route moves from input and evidence separation through connotation, listening response and synthesis to independent performance, challenge, feedback and retry.

Your Goal

Construct or challenge a complex character judgement by integrating contradictory evidence, weighing observable impact against plausible intent, using precise connotation and calibrated stance, and defending a fair revised assessment under challenge.

Why this lesson matters ·

For learners: At C2, a convincing character judgement must do more than sound balanced. It must distinguish behaviour from interpretation, weigh impact and plausible intent, integrate contradictory evidence, and remain open to revision.

For teachers: The lesson produces observable evidence from close reading, connotation choices, cross-context adaptation, listening response, synthesis, challenge response, scoring and an improved retry.

Do not reward sophistication by itself. Require the learner to distinguish observation, impact, inference and plausible intent; represent competing readings fairly; name evidence limits; and improve the judgement after one challenge.

TimeTeacher doesStudent doesRequired evidence
0–3Introduces Priya’s fictional case and two competing judgements without endorsing either.States the observed behaviour and strongest claim in each judgement.Three observations and two fair readings.
3–7Tests which claims are observations, impacts, inferences or assumptions.Separates the evidence layers and names what remains unknown. One evidence map with a stated limitation.
7–12Changes purpose and audience; challenges connotation and certainty.Adapts the assessment for feedback, selection notes and informal conversation.Three context-sensitive formulations.
12–17Plays both audios with transcripts closed and controls replay.Tracks each speaker’s claim, evidence, limitation and revision, then responds.A fair synthesis and one targeted question.
17–23Presses the learner to preserve valid criticism without turning it into a fixed identity.Integrates the strongest evidence and states a provisional judgement.A nuanced 60-second assessment.

1. Read one case and two judgements

3 min

Start with what Priya did. The community-project case and all names are fictional.

Observed behaviour

Priya challenged three vague promises, asked who might be excluded, requested the hidden costs, interrupted two quieter members, later invited them back into the discussion, and changed her proposal after hearing their concerns.

Competing judgements

Reading A: principled, rigorous and willing to revise.
Reading B: domineering, abrasive and only selectively collaborative.

STUDENT TASK
  1. Name three directly observable behaviours.
  2. State the strongest fair version of Reading A.
  3. State the strongest fair version of Reading B.
  4. Identify one claim that the current evidence cannot prove.
Neutral openingThe available evidence shows that Priya __________. This can reasonably be read as __________, although it does not by itself establish that __________.
You are ready whenYou can present both readings without turning either interpretation into a fact.
Teacher Help

If the learner begins with a personality label, ask what a camera or meeting transcript could capture. Accept actions and words as observations; treat character descriptions as interpretations that require support.

2. Separate evidence, impact and inference

4 min

A fair judgement can acknowledge harm without pretending to know a person’s private intention.

LayerQuestionEvidence from the caseUseful C2 language
ObservationWhat happened directly? She interrupted two members. The record shows that…
ImpactWhat effect was visible?Their contributions were delayed.Whatever her intention, the immediate effect was…
Plausible intentWhat may explain it?She was testing vague promises and hidden costs. This may be less a sign of ___ than an attempt to…
Pattern limitWhat remains unknown? One project and a small number of meetings. The pattern is suggestive rather than conclusive because…
STUDENT TASK
  1. Classify two claims as observation, impact, inference or plausible intent.
  2. Explain why good intent would not erase the impact.
  3. Explain why negative impact would not prove a fixed character trait.
  4. Name one further observation that could change the judgement.
Evidence boundaryNotwithstanding __________, the fact that __________ warrants concern. Even so, it would be premature to infer __________ without evidence of __________.
You are ready whenYour assessment keeps behaviour, impact, intention and identity separate.
Teacher Help

Do not let “she meant well” cancel impact or “people felt pressured” prove intent. Ask which claim each piece of evidence can support and which claim remains too broad.

3. Compare connotation and adapt the assessment

5 min

Precise connotation changes the judgement, and the audience changes how much evidence the wording must carry.

Less precise labelMore precise alternativesDistinction to test
stubbornresolute · inflexible · resistant to weak reasoningDoes she reject change, or demand stronger reasons?
controllingdirective · overbearing · exacting about processDoes she centralise decisions, dominate turns, or maintain standards?
inconsistentresponsive to evidence · unpredictable · selectively flexibleDid the change follow new evidence or personal convenience?
Peer feedback

Name behaviour, impact and a workable next step. Avoid fixing the person’s identity.

Selection notes

Use only job-relevant evidence, calibrated certainty and a clear evidence limit.

Informal conversation

Protect dignity and mark the assessment as provisional rather than authoritative.

STUDENT TASK
  1. Choose two precise terms and explain why they are not interchangeable.
  2. Give Priya peer feedback about interruption and revision.
  3. Write one sentence suitable for selection notes.
  4. Describe the case informally without gossip or an unsupported fixed label.
Context-sensitive stanceFor __________, I would describe the behaviour as __________ rather than __________ because the decision requires evidence of __________.
You are ready whenEach formulation has a clear purpose, evidence threshold and degree of certainty.
Teacher Help

Require an explanation for each word choice. If two alternatives are treated as synonyms, ask what additional behaviour would justify the stronger or more negative term.

4. Listen, test and respond

5 min

Two observers preserve different parts of the evidence. Listen for what each one includes, limits and revises.

Audio 1 · Australian English · Olivia · Amazon Polly Neural

Listen for the initial label, the overlooked evidence and the narrower claim.

Audio 2 · British English · Arthur · Amazon Polly Neural

Listen for the preserved criticism, later revision and remaining concern.

STUDENT TASK
  1. First listening: state each speaker’s overall judgement.
  2. Second listening: record one observation, one limitation and one revision from each.
  3. Identify the point on which the speakers genuinely disagree.
  4. Give a fair synthesis and ask one question that would resolve the disagreement.
Listening synthesisBoth speakers accept that __________. The first interprets this as __________, whereas the second preserves the concern that __________. The key missing evidence is whether __________.
You are ready whenYour response represents both speakers accurately before you evaluate them.
Open after listening · transcripts
Audio 1: I used to describe Priya as uncompromising because she questioned every vague promise in our community project. That label captures the pressure people felt, but it ignores what she actually did: she asked who might be excluded and which costs had been hidden. Her manner was sometimes abrupt. Still, the evidence supports a more limited claim: she was demanding about standards, not necessarily unwilling to cooperate.

Audio 2: I agree that standards mattered, yet I would not dismiss the criticism. In two meetings, Priya interrupted quieter members before they finished, even after the facilitator asked everyone to pause. Later, she invited those members back into the discussion and changed her proposal. I would describe the pattern as principled but unevenly collaborative. The revision matters, although the repeated interruptions still require attention.
Teacher Help · audio order

Keep transcripts closed. Play both audios once for overall judgement and once for observation, limitation and revision. Allow another replay only after the learner identifies the exact missing evidence.

5. Integrate the strongest evidence

6 min

A nuanced assessment should preserve valid criticism and valid revision without collapsing into “it depends.”

Preserve

The questioning exposed exclusions and hidden costs; later revision shows responsiveness to evidence.

Qualify

Repeated interruption had a real collaborative cost, even if the underlying standards were defensible.

Test next

Observe whether she can maintain rigorous standards while consistently sharing turns and decision ownership.

STUDENT TASK
  1. State the strongest supported positive interpretation.
  2. State the strongest supported criticism without exaggeration.
  3. Explain which evidence changes the judgement and which concern remains.
  4. Formulate one provisional character assessment in 60 seconds.
  5. Name the next observation that would confirm, weaken or reshape it.
Integrated assessmentPriya appears __________ insofar as __________. This should not obscure the fact that __________, whose impact was __________. Her later decision to __________ suggests __________; however, the judgement should remain provisional until __________.
You are ready whenYour assessment has a clear conclusion, a counterweight, an evidence limit and a next test.

Teacher Help

If the learner ends with “she is both good and bad,” ask for a precise main judgement, the evidence threshold behind it and the specific condition that could change it.

6. Final Practice · challenge a new judgement

7 min

Analyse a new fictional case, defend your judgement, answer one challenge and improve it.

Independent mixed-skill performance

New case: During a neighbourhood festival project, Mateo rejected three decoration ideas as impractical, rewrote the schedule overnight and sent detailed corrections without greetings. Several volunteers called him controlling and inflexible. Later, the group learned that he had checked new weather and safety restrictions, preserved two ideas with safer materials and invited a junior volunteer to present the revised plan. After the deadline, however, he changed one person’s task again without consulting them.

  1. Separate observations, visible impacts, inferences and plausible intentions.
  2. Present the strongest fair interpretation on each side.
  3. Choose precise character language and calibrate certainty.
  4. Construct or challenge the original judgement using the full evidence.
  5. Name one limitation and the next evidence you would seek.
  6. Answer one teacher challenge and deliver an improved assessment.

Teacher challenge — choose one: The schedule change prevented an accident; Mateo repeats the unconsulted task change next month; or the junior volunteer says the invitation felt genuine but came only after public criticism.

Language precision and calibrated stance · 0–2

0 · Not yetUses fixed labels, vague balance or certainty that the evidence cannot support.
1 · DevelopingUses some precise connotation and hedging, but implication, degree or evidence limit is inconsistent.
2 · SecureIndependently selects precise connotation, marks degree and certainty, and distinguishes behaviour, impact, inference and plausible intent.

Score the first independent performance.

Evidence integration and fair judgement · 0–2

0 · Not yetKeeps or replaces a label without integrating contradictory evidence.
1 · DevelopingRevises the judgement, but one counter-reading, limitation, challenge response or evidence link remains weak.
2 · SecureIndependently integrates both sides, gives a defensible provisional judgement, answers the challenge and states what evidence could change it.

Record one action-focused reason for the score.

Target and retry: Aim for at least 3/4 with no zero. Teacher gives one language-precision point and one evidence-integration point. Learner then delivers a 60–75 second improved assessment with fewer visible prompts and strengthens the weaker criterion.
Teacher Help · feedback and retry

Observe the full first performance without interruption. Give one success note and one correction for each scoring dimension. Ask one challenge, then run the retry immediately with only the case and scoring headings visible.
