Why this lesson matters · เหตุผลที่เรียนบทนี้

For learners: Identify a destination and two supporting route details from short spoken directions.

For teachers: Learners prepare a shared map, listen first for the destination, replay for route evidence, request a precise repetition and complete an independent map-based listening task.

Your goal

By the end of this lesson, you can identify a destination and two route details from short spoken directions.

Why this listening skill matters

  • You can follow directions even when you do not understand every word.
  • You learn to listen for the few details that control the route.
  • You prepare to ask for clarification and give directions in a real conversation.
Progress Focus · Lesson structure
LISTListening accuracy

Teacher Lesson Plan · Read before class

Before class: Check that both audio buttons work and keep both transcripts closed.

  1. Ask the learner to find Start A, Start B and the named places on the map.
  2. Play both recordings once. The learner chooses only the destination.
  3. Replay each recording. The learner traces the route and reports the clues heard.
  4. Practise one clarification request, then replay only the unclear part.
  5. Run the final listening challenge with no transcript and minimal teacher help.
  6. Score only the three Progress Focus areas, give one useful correction and retry the weakest part.

Teacher-talk rule: Give the task, play the audio and ask for evidence. Do not explain the route before the learner listens.

Engduo Audio: The two recordings use different English voices. Audio never starts automatically. Open a transcript only after the learner has listened and made a choice.

1Prepare the town plan

Student task

  1. Find Start A and Start B.
  2. Point to the park, library, museum, café, school, sports centre and bus stop.
  3. Predict one place that may be the destination. You do not need to be correct yet.
Use Start A for Audio 1 and Start B for Audio 2. The plan is simplified for listening practice.

How to run Stage 1

Point to one place and ask “What is this?” If the learner cannot name it, say the word once and have the learner point to it. Do not teach route phrases yet; the goal is only to make the map easy to use.

2Listen once for the destination

Keep the transcripts closed. Listen for the final place, not every word.

Audio 1 · Start A

Engduo Audio · American English

Choose: library · museum · café

Check the destination

Museum. The speaker says it is opposite the café.

Transcript — open after listening

Go straight past the park and turn left at the library. The museum is opposite the café.

Audio 2 · Start B

Engduo Audio · Australian English

Choose: school · sports centre · bus stop

Check the destination

Bus stop. The speaker says it will be on your right.

Transcript — open after listening

Walk between the school and the sports centre. You’ll see the bus stop on your right.

How to run Stage 2

Play each recording once at 1×. Ask “Where does the visitor finish?” The learner points and says the place. Accept a correct destination before asking how they know; do not replay until both first choices are complete.

3Listen again and collect route details

For each audio

  1. Place your finger on the correct start.
  2. Replay the recording and move your finger as the speaker gives directions.
  3. Say one movement clue, one landmark and the final position.

Audio 1 evidence

Movement: go straight · turn left

Landmarks: park · library

Final position: opposite the café

Audio 2 evidence

Movement: walk between

Landmarks: school · sports centre

Final position: on your right

How to run Stage 3

Cover the evidence cards for the first replay. Pause only after a complete phrase if needed. Ask “Which words changed your finger’s direction?” and “Which place helped you know where you were?” Reveal the cards only to check, not to read aloud together.

4Ask for the part you missed

The learner should not restart the whole task when only one detail is unclear.

Student says:
“Could you repeat the part after the park?”
“Could you play the final sentence again?”
“Did the speaker say left or right?”
Practise once

  1. The teacher chooses one audio and pauses after the first phrase.
  2. The student asks for the missing part.
  3. The teacher replays only the useful sentence.
  4. The student completes the route and names the destination.

How to run Stage 4

Do not pretend that the audio has changed. Pause at a natural point, wait for the learner to request the missing information, then replay the relevant recording or sentence. The learner must use the new information to finish the map task.

5Final listening challenge

Transcript closed. Audio at 1×. Teacher chooses Audio 1 or Audio 2.

Student completes all four actions

  1. Point to the correct start.
  2. Trace the route while listening.
  3. Name the destination.
  4. Report two clues that prove the answer.
LISTDestination + two audio clues
CMRoute matches the spoken meaning
FPCompletes independently or asks for useful repetition
How to run Stage 5

Choose one recording without telling the learner which one. Allow one learner-requested replay. After the attempt, correct only one route-meaning problem and one listening strategy problem, then repeat the same task once with less support.
