Report an Emergency and Follow Instructions

Report an urgent problem, answer a focused question, follow instructions, clarify one point, and confirm the first safe action.

B130 minutesTF15 · Safety & Emergencies

Today’s goal

By the end, you can complete a six-turn emergency report without reading a full script. Your listener should understand what happened, where it is, what is known, and what you will do first.

CM Conversation management

Open clearly, answer the question, clarify one instruction, and confirm the action.

FP Functional performance

Make the urgent problem and first safe action easy for the listener to understand.

Teacher Lesson Plan

  1. Set the two roles and point to the six-turn flow.
  2. Let the learner choose useful lines; model only when needed.
  3. Play the Australian-English model once for meaning and once for noticing.
  4. Run Round 1 with the learner as Reporter.
  5. Switch roles and change the problem.
  6. Add one new fact or uncertainty.
  7. Run the unrehearsed final roleplay, score CM and FP, then retry one weak turn.

Teacher-talk rule: keep setup under 60 seconds per round. Do not interrupt the roleplay for correction.

Know the roles and six turns

3 min

Reporter

State the problem and exact location. Give only confirmed facts. Ask when an instruction is unclear. Repeat the first action.

Responsible responder

Ask one focused safety question. Give two safe, procedural instructions. Check that the Reporter understood.

  2. Responder

  3. Reporter

Student taskPoint to your role. Say what information you must give or ask for. Do not perform the full roleplay yet.
Teacher Help · exact setup

Say: “You are reporting a problem. I am the responsible staff member. We will speak for six turns.” Point to each turn. If the learner explains for too long, ask: “What happened? Where exactly?”

2

Choose usable lines

5 min

Reporter lines

  • “I need to report a safety problem…”
  • “It’s outside …, near …”
  • “As far as I can tell, …”
  • “I’m not sure whether …”
  • “Should I … after …?”
  • “Understood. I’ll … first.”

Responder lines

  • “Tell me exactly where you are.”
  • “Is anyone in immediate danger?”
  • “Move away from …”
  • “Ask people to use …”
  • “Wait by … and follow staff instructions.”
  • “Please confirm what you’ll do first.”

Fact or uncertainty? Say a fact only when you know it. Use as far as I can tell or I’m not sure whether when the situation is unclear.

Student taskChoose two lines for your first role. Personalise the location, but do not invent injuries or technical details.
Teacher Help · model only what is needed

Ask the learner to build one opening and one clarification. Model one chunk only if the learner cannot start. Keep all instructions procedural: move away, keep others back, use another route, wait at a safe point, follow official directions.

Listen to a short model

First listenWhere is the problem? What will the Reporter do first?
Read the model after listening

Reporter
Hello, I need to report a safety problem on the second floor.

Responder
Tell me exactly where you are and whether anyone is in immediate danger.

Reporter
I’m outside meeting room three, near the east stairs. There is water across the corridor. As far as I can tell, no one is hurt, but people are still walking toward it.

Responder
Move away from the wet area and ask people to use the other corridor. Wait by reception and follow staff instructions.

Reporter
Should I stay by reception after warning people?

Responder
Yes. Do not approach the spill. A staff member will meet you there.

Reporter
Understood. I’ll keep clear, warn people to use the other corridor, and wait by reception.

Second listenTap or note three moves: reporting, clarifying, confirming.
Teacher Help · two listens

First listen: no pausing. Check only location and first action. Second listen: pause after the clarification and confirmation. Ask, “Why does that make the exchange safer and clearer?” Do not drill the whole script.

4

Guided round: you are the Reporter

6 min

Scenario A · Wet corridor

There is water across the corridor outside meeting room 3, near the east stairs. No one appears hurt. People are still walking toward the area.

Student taskComplete all six turns as the Reporter. Use the cue words, not the model transcript.
Teacher Help · Round 1

Play the Responsible responder. Ask one focused question. Give: “Move away from the wet area and ask people to use the other corridor. Wait by reception.” If needed, prompt only with “Clarify one point” or “Confirm your first action.” Do not correct during the round.

5

Role switch: you are the Responder

5 min

Scenario B · Partly blocked exit

Several boxes are partly blocking an exit near the training room. No one is trapped. People can use the main exit near reception.

Student taskAsk one focused question, give two procedural instructions, and ask the Reporter to confirm the first action.
Teacher Help · role switch

Play the Reporter and give only the scenario facts. The learner may say: “Keep people away from that exit. Ask them to use the main exit and follow staff instructions.” Stop any technical advice or request to move the boxes; redirect to safe procedural language.

6

Add a new variation

3 min

Scenario C · Smell of smoke

You notice a smell of smoke near the staff kitchen. You do not know the cause. You are already moving away and have not investigated.

Student taskChoose either role. Change one location detail or one safe instruction. Include one uncertainty phrase. Do not add an injury, cause, or technical explanation.
Teacher Help · make it new

Give 20 seconds to choose a role. Use only the cue words if needed. The safe response is to move away, keep others back, report it, and follow official directions—not to investigate.

7

Final Practice: unrehearsed roleplay

4 min

The teacher chooses a fresh, low-detail safety problem and assigns your role. Complete the exchange without reading a full script.

  1. Make the problem and location clear.
  2. Answer or ask one focused question.
  3. Give or follow two safe procedural instructions.
  4. Clarify one point.
  5. Confirm the first action and close.

CM · 0–2

2 manages the exchange independently
1 completes it with one prompt
0 cannot complete the turn sequence yet

FP · 0–2

2 problem and first action are fully clear
1 one detail needs clarification
0 the listener cannot identify the safe first action

Progress FocusYour target is 3/4 or higher, then retry one weak turn with clearer wording.
Teacher Help · evidence and retry

Do not interrupt. After the close, give one interaction point and one functional-language point. Ask the learner to retry only the weakest turn. Record CM and FP separately.
