Ask, respond, clarify and confirm so both speakers can finish the exchange.
Roleplay · A1–A2
Ask for and Give Directions
Ask for a place, guide another person in three clear steps, clarify one detail and confirm the destination.
This lesson uses one clear five-turn conversation. The speaking order stays the same while the destination and the learner’s role change, so every round feels familiar but still requires real communication.
Why this lesson matters · เหตุผลที่เรียนบทนี้
For learners: Ask for a destination, give a short route and use one clarification or confirmation question.
For teachers: Every practice round follows one visible five-turn conversation. The learner first asks and clarifies as the Traveller, then gives directions as the Local person, before completing a less-supported final round.
Your goal
By the end of this lesson, you can ask for a destination, give a short route and use one clarification or confirmation question.
Why this roleplay matters
- You practise both sides of a real directions conversation.
- You learn to divide a route into short, useful chunks.
- You can repair one unclear detail instead of restarting the whole conversation.
Progress Focus · Lesson structure
Guide the Traveller to the correct destination without teacher-supplied lines.
Teacher Lesson Plan · Read before class
Before class: Check the town map and both audio buttons. The learner should speak in both roles.
- Show the five-turn conversation and assign the first roles.
- Model one short route on the town map.
- Play one model to notice the turn order.
- Run Round 1 with the learner as Traveller.
- Run Round 2 with the learner as Local person.
- Choose a new destination for Final Practice, score CM and FP, then retry once.
Teacher-talk rule: Demonstrate briefly, then let the learner complete each round. Do not read the whole phrase bank aloud or correct during the interaction.
1Know the two roles and the five turns
Every practice round follows the same order. Only the destination and the learner’s role change.
- Traveller: Ask for a place.
- Local person: Give a short route.
- Traveller: Clarify one detail.
- Local person: Answer that question.
- Traveller: Confirm the destination.
Traveller can say
“Excuse me. How do I get to the bank?”
“Did you say left or right?”
Local person can say
“Go straight and turn left at the library.”
“Yes. The bank is on your right.”
One complete exchange
Traveller: Excuse me. How do I get to the bank?
Local person: Go straight and turn left at the library. The bank is opposite the pharmacy.
Traveller: Did you say turn left at the library?
Local person: Yes, turn left at the library.
Traveller: Great. So the bank is opposite the pharmacy. Thank you.
Perform this exchange once. Then change the destination and create a new route.
How to run Stage 1
Read the five turn labels together. Perform the complete exchange once with the learner, then stop using the example. Say: “You will be the Traveller first. I will be the Local person.” The practice rounds must use a different destination and route.
2Build one route on the town map
- Put your finger on Start.
- Choose one destination but do not say it yet.
- Plan three parts: a movement, a landmark and the final position.
- Say the route using the frame below.
Route frame: First, ___. Then, ___ at ___. The ___ is ___.
How to run Stage 2
Point to Start and model one route with exactly three parts: movement, landmark and final position. Then choose a different destination and ask the learner to create one route. Correct only the route language needed for the learner to complete it.
3Listen for the five-turn pattern
The audio is for noticing the conversation order. You do not need to trace a route or memorise the recording.
- The Traveller asks for a place.
- The Local person gives directions.
- The Traveller clarifies or confirms.

Excuse me. How do I get to the library? Go straight, turn left at the bank, and walk past the pharmacy. The library is on your right.

Is there a station near here? Cross the road, go past the supermarket, and turn right at the post office. The station is opposite the bank.
How to run Stage 3
Play Model A once. Ask the learner to point to turns 1, 2 and 3 on the five-turn list when they hear them. Open the transcript only to check. Use Model B only when time allows; do not turn this stage into line-by-line reading.
4Round 1: Student is the Traveller
Student: Ask, clarify and confirm.
Teacher: Give the route and answer the clarification question.
- Student asks for one destination.
- Teacher gives a route in no more than three steps.
- Student asks one clarification question.
- Teacher answers only that question.
- Student confirms the destination.
Student support: Keep the Stage 1 sample questions visible.
How to run Stage 4
Choose one simple destination and speak naturally. Keep the route to three chunks. Do not correct during the round. If the student stops, point to the next turn on the five-turn list without supplying the full sentence.
5Round 2: Student is the Local person
Teacher: Be the Traveller and ask for a different place.
Student: Give the route and answer the clarification question.
- Teacher asks for a different destination.
- Student gives a route with movement, landmark and final position.
- Teacher asks one clarification question.
- Student answers that question.
- Teacher confirms the destination.
Student support: Use the route frame from Stage 2.
How to run Stage 5
Choose a different destination. Let the student finish before correcting. If support is needed, point to movement, landmark or final position in the route frame. If the round is easy, change only the start point for one quick extra attempt.
6Final roleplay: New destination, less support
Teacher chooses the student’s weaker role. Use a new destination and keep the five-turn order. Partly cover the sample sentences, but leave the town map visible.
- Ask for the destination.
- Give or follow a three-step route.
- Clarify one detail and answer it.
- Confirm the correct place.
- CM: The student manages their turns and completes the exchange.
- FP: The route leads to the correct destination without teacher-supplied lines.
How to run Stage 6
Observe without interruption. Score CM and FP from this attempt. Give one interaction correction and one route-language correction, then repeat a shorter version with the same destination so the learner can improve immediately.
