Vocabulary Builder standard: Students must say, choose and personalise the words. Do not turn the page into a list for the student to read aloud.
Teacher: Set one real situation and elicit known words.
Student: Chooses a place and says what people do there.
Required result: One clear vocabulary purpose.
Teacher: Use the visual to check meaning, not translation only.
Student: Matches each place with an action.
Required result: Meaning-and-action pairs.
Teacher: Ask the student to choose between close options.
Student: Explains why one word fits the situation.
Required result: More precise word choice.
Teacher: Model one sentence, then remove the model.
Student: Creates original true sentences.
Required result: Active use, not recognition only.
Teacher: Give a practical destination or location problem.
Student: Chooses and uses the words to solve it.
Required result: One completed communication task.
Teacher: Correct two high-value items and run a short retry.
Student: Repeats the task with improved word choice.
Required result: Visible vocabulary progress.
Feedback rule: Let the learner complete the attempt first. Give one communication or task-success point and one language improvement, then run a short retry.
1. Connect each place to an action
Your task: Do not combine every phrase. For each place, choose one matching action and use it to make one complete sentence.
- Say the place.
- Choose one action shown under it.
- Make a true or useful sentence, then add one personal detail if you can.
I go to the library to borrow a book.
You can buy medicine at the pharmacy.
Library
borrow a book · study · read quietly
Try: I go to the library to…
Pharmacy
buy medicine · ask about health products
Try: You can… at the pharmacy.
Post office
send a parcel · buy stamps
Try: I need the post office because…
Train station
catch a train · check a platform
Try: At the train station, you can…
Supermarket
buy groceries · find household products
Try: I usually go to the supermarket to…

How to run Stage 1
Model one place-and-action sentence. Point to a different place and ask the learner to choose one matching action, make a sentence and add one true detail. Use selected words only; do not ask the learner to read every card.
2. Listen and identify the places
Play each recording once without reading the answers. Listen for the action clue, then choose the two places in the order you hear them.
Clues 1–2
Engduo Audio · American English
Which places did you hear?
Clues 3–4
Engduo Audio · British English
Which places did you hear?
How to run Stage 2
Play each recording once before the learner chooses. Ask which action word revealed the place, then replay once to confirm. The learner should explain the clue instead of guessing from the buttons.
3. Describe where each place is
Student task: Use the town plan to help another person identify a place.
- Choose one place on the town plan.
- Choose one position phrase: next to · opposite · between · on the corner · near.
- Say one complete sentence. Your partner points to the place you described.
- Make three true sentences and one false sentence. Your partner identifies the false sentence.
Use now: road · corner
Sentence pattern: The ______ is ______ the ______.
Examples: The supermarket is between the library and the clinic. The bank is opposite the post office.
How to run Stage 3
Say: “Choose a place. Do not tell me its name.” The learner describes its position and you point to the place. Swap roles once. Finish with three true sentences and one false sentence, correcting only after the round. If the learner finishes early, briefly preview the linked direction lesson.
4. Choose the right place and explain why
For each situation, say the place first and then give one reason.
- I need to send a birthday gift.
- I have a headache and need some medicine.
- I want a quiet place to study.
- I need cash, but the bank is closed.
- I missed my train and need information.
- I lost my phone and need to report it.
Response frame: You need to go to the ______ because you can ______ there.
How to run Stage 4
Teacher: Read one situation beginning with “I need …” Student: Recommend the place using “You need to go to … because …” If the learner names only the place, ask: “Why there?” Use the response frame for the first two situations, then hide it for the remaining four.
Final practice: Choose and use the words
Complete the task without copying a model. The teacher observes the communication outcome before giving one focused correction and asking for a shorter retry.
Task: Name six places without looking. Explain what people do in three of them and make two location sentences from the map.
Success: You use the correct place for the situation and your location phrase allows a listener to identify it.
Teacher scoring guide
Score the independent final attempt—not the supported practice.
VR · Vocabulary Range
0 · Not yet Relies mainly on teacher-supplied words or cannot yet choose vocabulary that fits the meaning.
1 · With support Uses some suitable target words after one prompt, model, or focused correction.
2 · Independent Chooses and uses a useful range of target words naturally in an original message.
FP · Functional Performance
0 · Not yet Cannot yet complete the stated communication outcome clearly enough for the listener.
1 · With support Completes the outcome after one clear prompt, repair, or supplied frame.
2 · Independent Completes the real communication outcome clearly without a model or supplied key sentence.
How to run Stage 5
Remove full-sentence models. Let the learner complete the independent task first, score VR and FP from the evidence, give one focused correction, and ask for one shorter retry.
