Pronunciation Lab: Word Stress for Clear Messages
Make useful multi-syllable words easier to understand by locating and producing one main stressed syllable.
Your goal

Your progress path
Use the target feature in words and short phrases.
Apply the feature in a real message so the listener understands without guessing.
30-minute lesson route
1. Feel the stressed syllable
A stressed syllable is usually clearer, longer, or more prominent than the others.
First syllable
CUS-to-mer
COL-league
Second syllable
ap-POINT-ment
a-VAIL-a-ble
im-POR-tant
Later stress
in-for-MA-tion
Second syllable group
di-REC-tion
so-LU-tion
de-LIV-er-y
to-MOR-row
2. Listen, mark, and tap
Tap once on the strongest syllable. Do not give every syllable equal force.
Tap: CUS · COL · POINT · VAIL · POR
Tap: MA · REC · LU · LIV · MOR
3. Use a visual stress code
Large circle = main stress. Small circle = unstressed syllable.

Ooo: customer
oOo: appointment, important, direction, solution, delivery, tomorrow
oOoo: available
ooOo: information
Oo: colleague
Say the pattern first, then replace the circles with the word.
4. Transfer stress into a message
Keep the stressed syllable clear when the word is inside a sentence.
The CUStomer has an imPORtant apPOINTment toMORrow.
Please send the deLIVery inforMAtion to my COLleague.
Your message: choose five target words and create a two-sentence phone or work message.
Final practice: Hear and say the meaning clearly
Complete the task without copying a model. The teacher observes the communication outcome before giving one focused correction and asking for a shorter retry.
Task: Mark the main stress in ten target words, then deliver a two-sentence message using five words without reading the stress marks.
Success: At least eight stress marks match the model and the listener identifies all five target words in the message.
LIST · Listening Comprehension
1 Misses the main meaning or most key details even after replay.
2 Understands the main meaning and most details with replay or support.
3 Understands and uses the key meaning and details with minimal replay.
PRON · Pronunciation
1 The listener frequently cannot identify the intended word or meaning.
2 Usually understandable, with some inconsistent target features.
3 Uses the target feature consistently enough for clear independent communication.

Teacher guide · 30-minute delivery
- Confirm the learner outcome and connect it to one real use before opening every activity.
- Use the first visual or audio for meaning before explaining language.
- Select only the examples and phrases needed for this learner’s final task.
- Run the guided stage with reduced support rather than reading every instruction aloud.
- Complete Final Practice without interruption. Check perception before production, then correct the sound or prominence that has the greatest effect on meaning.
- Record LIST, PRON separately from 1–3, give one focused correction, and retry the weakest part.
