Why this lesson matters · เหตุผลที่เรียนบทนี้

For learners: Use one visual scene to build imagination, critical thinking, topic vocabulary, phrasal verbs, and independent speaking.

For teachers: The visual leads. Learners observe, select optional language, imagine beyond the frame, challenge assumptions, and sustain an unscripted discussion. No listening audio or model answer.

Your goal

By the end of this lesson, you can interpret the picture, use selected topic words and phrasal verbs, develop an original viewpoint, and sustain a three-minute discussion without following a script.

Teacher Lesson Plan

The picture leads; the learner chooses the direction. Vocabulary, phrasal verbs, sentence starters, and questions are optional resources—not boxes to complete. Do not add listening audio or a model answer.

StageTeacher moveEvidence
1Ask what the learner notices before giving any vocabulary.Details + first inference
2Let the learner select only the words that support their emerging idea.Useful language choices
3Accept different stories when the learner can connect them to visual evidence.Original possibility
4Challenge one assumption and ask about trade-offs or consequences.Reasoned judgement
5Follow the learner’s idea instead of completing every prompt.Learner-led exchange
6Score IDEA/LANG/TALK 0–2, give one target, then retry only that part.Independent talk + improvement
Topic picture
Two adults discussing daily choices beside a weekly planner
1 · Look closely

What is really happening in this picture?

Use the picture above.Start with what you can actually see. Then separate observation from imagination.
NoticeWhat small details show how the two people are using their time?
InferWhat might they be deciding or trying to improve?
QuestionWhat important information is missing from the picture?

Choose your own direction: work–life balance, planning, friendship, productivity, rest, technology, or another idea you notice.

How to run Stage 1

4 min. Ask for three visible details before interpretation. Label clearly: “I can see…” versus “I imagine…” The learner may introduce a different topic if it grows naturally from the image.

2 · Build optional language

Choose words that help your idea

You do not need to use every item. Select the language that makes your own interpretation more precise.

prioritythe thing that matters most
balancea fair amount of different needs
flexibleable to change when needed
realisticpossible in real life
routinesomething done regularly
distractionsomething that takes attention away
rechargerest and recover energy
compromisean agreement where both sides adjust

Phrasal verbs for this picture

Language note: A phrasal verb usually combines a verb with a particle, such as cut back on or wind down, creating a meaning that may differ from the verb alone.

cut back onreduce somethingThey might cut back on late-night work.
fit infind time for somethingHow can they fit in exercise?
wind downrelax graduallyShe may need time to wind down.
catch up ondo something that was delayedHe is trying to catch up on his planning.
work outfind a solutionThey are working out a better routine.
How to run Stage 2

5 min. Ask the learner to choose three topic words and one or two phrasal verbs. They may reject or replace any item. Meaningful choice matters more than using the full list.

3 · Imagine beyond the frame

Create a story the picture does not show

BeforeWhat happened ten minutes before this scene?
NowWhat difficult choice could they be discussing?
NextWhat might change after this conversation?

Optional sentence starters: They may have… · Perhaps the real problem is… · One possible result could be… · I get the impression that…

How to run Stage 3

5 min. Ask the learner to build one coherent possibility, not the “correct” story. Follow up with “Which detail in the picture gave you that idea?”

4 · Think critically

Challenge the first easy answer

Trade-offWhat could they gain—and what could they lose—by changing their routine?
AssumptionAre we assuming that being busy means being productive?
DecisionWhat is one realistic compromise, and why might it work?

Useful thinking language: It depends on… · The advantage is…, but the drawback is… · We may be assuming that… · A fair compromise would be…

How to run Stage 4

5 min. Choose one question only if it creates depth. Ask for a reason, an example, and one possible consequence. Do not force the learner through all three cards.

5 · Open the discussion

Let one idea lead to another

Start anywhere: the people, the planner, the phones, work–life balance, or a similar choice in your own life. Speak, respond, and let the conversation change direction naturally.

ExploreWhat makes you think that?
ImagineWhat would happen if…?
ChallengeCould the opposite also be true?

Freedom rule: You may leave the picture and connect the idea to real life once the conversation has a clear direction.

How to run Stage 5

5 min. Facilitate rather than lead. Ask questions generated by the learner’s last idea. Avoid returning to unused prompts simply because they are on the page.

6 · Final Free Talk

Final Practice: Build an original three-minute discussion

Task: Choose one idea inspired by the picture. Develop it with imagination or critical thinking, use any useful new language, respond to two genuine follow-up questions, and add a final thought that was not prepared in advance.

Success: The discussion sounds like your thinking—not a completed worksheet or memorised model.

IDEA · Critical thinking & imagination

0 The talk remains a list of visible objects or copied prompts.

1 One interpretation or judgement develops with support.

2 Original ideas, reasons, possibilities, or consequences develop clearly.

LANG · Vocabulary & phrasal verbs

0 General words repeatedly block the intended meaning.

1 Selected new language helps after prompts or correction.

2 Topic words and expressions are chosen naturally to make ideas precise.

TALK · Independent speaking

0 The teacher manages most of the discussion.

1 The learner continues with visible prompts or one reminder.

2 The learner develops, responds, questions, and extends independently.

Result: 0–2 Rebuild · 3–4 Developing · 5–6 Pilot evidence.

Feedback + retry: Keep the first score. Choose one target—deeper idea, more precise language, or more independent interaction—and retry only the weakest part.

How to run Stage 6

6 min. Record IDEA/LANG/TALK from 0–2 before feedback. Give one precise target and run a short focused retry without restarting the entire discussion.
