Fictional adult learner reviewing a weekly planner and choosing one realistic routine change

Habits, Time Pressure, and One Better Routine

Use evidence from a crowded week, listen to real constraints, compare priorities, and agree one routine change that can survive a change of plan.

LevelB2
Time30 minutes
Lesson typeMixed-Skill / Mastery
OutcomeOne feasible routine change

Why this lesson matters

Busy weeks create several possible changes, but a useful conversation must identify the real pressure point, protect important commitments and make one plan that another person can understand and support.

Why this lesson matters · เหตุผลที่เรียนบทนี้

For learners: Analyse habits, priorities and changing routines.

For teachers: The lesson connects a routine record, spoken constraints, comparison, planning and an independent retry so evidence is recycled into one feasible change.

Your Goal

By the end of this lesson, you can analyse a pressured weekly routine, compare two possible changes and agree one feasible improvement with a success signal and fallback.

Read the week under pressure

Start with what the routine record actually shows. Do not offer advice yet.

Fixed commitments

  • Work: 09:00–17:30, Monday–Friday
  • Commute: about 70 minutes each way
  • Evening course: Tuesday and Thursday
  • Family lunch: Sunday

Current habits

  • Exercise planned after work three times
  • Two late study nights
  • Weekend study target: four hours
  • Sleep varies from six to eight hours

What the record suggests

  • Tuesday and Thursday are crowded
  • Exercise is often skipped on late days
  • Friday before dinner is flexible
  • The study target may be too concentrated
  1. Name two fixed commitments and two flexible habits.
  2. State the main pressure point in one neutral sentence.
  3. Name one piece of information you still need.
How to run Stage 1

Accept a short neutral summary before any solution. If the learner says “The person is bad at time management,” ask: “What evidence on the board supports that?” Redirect judgement to the record.

2 · Evidence5 min

Separate evidence from assumptions

FactDirectly shown in the routine record.
PatternSomething that happens repeatedly.
AssumptionA possible explanation that is not yet confirmed.
UnknownInformation still needed before deciding.
Report carefully

The routine record shows that…
The main pressure point seems to be…

Limit the claim

That may be part of the problem, but it does not prove that…
We still need to check whether…

Classify these four statements and explain each label:

  1. Exercise was skipped on both course nights.
  2. The same conflict appears twice in the week.
  3. The learner probably lacks motivation.
  4. We do not know whether lunchtime is flexible.
คำช่วยภาษาไทย — เปิดเมื่อจำเป็น

Fact คือข้อมูลที่เห็นตรง ๆ, pattern คือสิ่งที่เกิดซ้ำ, assumption คือคำอธิบายที่เป็นไปได้แต่ยังไม่ยืนยัน และ unknown คือข้อมูลที่ยังต้องถามเพิ่ม

How to run Stage 2

Require a reason for every label. Model one careful correction only: change “The learner has no motivation” to “The skipped sessions may suggest a timing conflict, but they do not prove a lack of motivation.”

3 · Compare priorities5 min

Compare two possible changes

OptionBenefitTrade-offEvidence question
Move exercise to Friday before dinnerUses an existing flexible slotFriday plans may changeIs that slot reliably available?
Divide weekend study into shorter sessionsReduces one long blockNeeds two protected slotsWhich weekend time is genuinely flexible?
Compare

The first option is more realistic because…
The advantage is…; the trade-off is…

Prioritise

___ matters more this week because…
If we protect ___, we may need to reduce or move ___.

  1. Compare both options using one benefit and one trade-off.
  2. Choose the stronger option from the evidence available.
  3. State one question that could change your decision.
How to run Stage 3

Do not reward the “healthier” or more ambitious answer. Reward a clear comparison connected to the record. Challenge vague words such as better or easier by asking “Better for which priority?”

4 · Listen and respond5 min

Recover the speaker’s real constraints

Engduo Audio: Listen for priorities and limits before proposing a plan. Audio never starts automatically.

British English · Amy Neural
  1. First listening: state the speaker’s main problem and priority.
  2. Second listening: record two fixed constraints, one flexible option and one boundary.
  3. Respond with a careful summary and one question that helps the decision.
Transcript · open only after the listening task

My week looks manageable on paper, but Tuesday and Thursday are much more demanding than the other days. I leave home before seven, commute for over an hour, and attend an evening course after work. I do not want to drop the course because it supports an important goal. The problem is that I often plan exercise for those same evenings and then skip it when I get home late. Friday is more flexible, and I usually have thirty minutes before dinner. I would like a routine that protects my course, gives me a realistic chance to exercise, and does not reduce my sleep. I am open to moving the exercise, but I do not want a plan that depends on waking up earlier.

How to run Stage 4

Play Audio 1 twice. After the first play, accept only situation and priority. After the second, require exact constraints. Do not show the transcript until the learner has given a full response. Prompt once with “What is fixed, and what is flexible?”

5 · Agree a plan6 min

Build one plan that can survive pressure

Change

The most realistic change would be…

Evidence

This fits the record because…

Success signal

We will know it is working if…

Fallback

If ___ happens, the fallback is…

  1. Student proposes one change and supports it with evidence.
  2. Teacher raises one real constraint or trade-off.
  3. Student revises the plan, gives a success signal and adds a fallback.
  4. Both speakers confirm the plan in one final sentence.
คำช่วยภาษาไทย — เปิดเมื่อจำเป็น

Success signal คือสิ่งที่สังเกตได้ว่ากิจวัตรใหม่กำลังทำงาน เช่น ทำตามแผนได้ในช่วงที่ตกลงไว้ ไม่ใช่คำรับประกันผลลัพธ์ ส่วน fallback คือทางเลือกสำรองเมื่อเงื่อนไขเปลี่ยน

How to run Stage 5

Play the partner, not the expert. Challenge one vague plan with a realistic constraint. Stop correcting during the negotiation; note one vocabulary-range issue and one performance issue for feedback after the round.

6 · Final Practice6 min

Revise the plan, perform, and retry

Listen to an unseen change. Build a complete response without returning to the model language.

Indian English · Kajal Neural
FINAL PERFORMANCE
  1. State the main pressure point using evidence.
  2. Explain what changed and what remains fixed.
  3. Compare two possible responses and name one trade-off.
  4. Choose one feasible routine change.
  5. Give one observable success signal and one fallback.
  6. Answer one teacher challenge question.

VR · Vocabulary Range

0General or repeated language does not make the evidence, priority or change clear.
1Uses some useful habit/time/change language but needs prompts or repeats a narrow set.
2Independently distinguishes fixed/flexible, evidence/assumption, priority/trade-off and plan/fallback with a precise range.

FP · Functional Performance

0Does not yet produce a feasible change with a success signal and fallback.
1Completes most parts with support, or the plan is only partly connected to the evidence.
2Independently analyses, compares, agrees a feasible change, gives a signal and fallback, answers a challenge and improves the retry.
Target and retry

Target: at least 3/4 with no zero. Teacher gives one VR point and one FP point. Learner then delivers a 45–60 second retry that improves the weaker criterion.

Transcript · open after the independent response

There is one change to the plan. This Friday, I need to stay late for a team meeting, so the exercise slot before dinner is no longer available. The Tuesday and Thursday course times are unchanged, and I still need to protect my sleep. However, my neighbour has invited me to take a thirty-minute walk on Saturday morning. Saturday afternoon is reserved for family, but the morning is flexible. I could also use a short twenty-minute slot at lunchtime on Wednesday, although that would need to remain optional if work becomes busy. Please revise the plan so that it still includes one realistic change, a clear sign that it is working, and a fallback if the Saturday walk cannot happen.

How to run Stage 6

Play Audio 2 twice. Allow 30 seconds of keyword planning. Do not supply a sentence during the first performance. Score VR and FP, give one precise point for each, then run the full 45–60 second retry. Record the improved evidence, not only the first score.
