Making Plans by Phone
Separate the first suggestion from the final agreement—then confirm what actually changed.
Phone calls remove visual clues. This lesson helps you follow a changing plan, record only the details that matter, and confirm the final agreement clearly.
Why this lesson matters · เหตุผลที่เรียนบทนี้
For learners: Phone plans often change. Learn to separate first suggestions from final agreements so you arrive at the right time and place.
For teachers: The route moves from visible categories to gist, detail evidence, a supported confirmation, and an unseen message with a new accent.
Your goal
Follow a short phone conversation about plans, identify the activity, day, time and place, and confirm the final agreed information.

Teacher Lesson Plan · Read before class
| Time | Teacher does | Student does | Evidence |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0–4 | Shows the five detail categories and elicits possible answer types. | Predicts one possible answer for each category. | Five relevant predictions. |
| 4–9 | Plays Audio 1 once at normal speed without pausing. | Chooses the purpose and records any final details heard. | One gist choice. |
| 9–15 | Replays Audio 1 once. | Completes the five-detail board with keywords. | Four final details plus one change. |
| 15–20 | Reveals the answer, then the transcript. | Finds words that signal a change and confirmation. | Two pieces of spoken evidence. |
| 20–24 | Runs one short partner exchange and removes the model. | Changes one detail and confirms all four final details. | One accurate confirmation. |
| 24–30 | Plays Audio 2 up to two times and scores independently. | Reports what stayed the same, what changed and the final plan. | Independent final response and retry. |
1Prepare the five-detail board
Predict the type of information you need. Do not guess the final answers yet.
- Say one possible answer type for each card.
- Choose two cards that may be easiest to confuse.
- Prepare to write keywords—not full sentences—while listening.
Teacher Help · Stage 1
Review the categories only. Do not reveal lunch, Saturday, 1:30 or Green Kitchen. Accept simple predictions such as “a meal,” “the weekend” or “a café.”
2First listen · choose the purpose
Listen once at normal speed. Focus on the reason for the call, not every detail.
- Choose A, B or C.
- Write one phrase that supports your choice.
- Mark your confidence: sure / maybe / not sure.
Check the gist
B · Arrange lunch. Evidence includes “free for lunch” and the final confirmation of lunch on Saturday.
Teacher Help · Stage 2
Play Audio 1 once without pausing or transcript support. Ask for one answer and one phrase. Do not correct missing day, time or place yet.
3Second listen · collect the final details
Replay Audio 1 once. Record the final agreement, not every idea you hear.

Answer check
Final plan: lunch · Saturday · 1:30 · Green Kitchen.
Changed ideas: 1:00 changes to 1:30; the new café changes to Green Kitchen.
Teacher Help · Stage 3
Allow one complete replay. Require the learner to distinguish the first suggestions from the final agreement. Accept “one thirty” or “1:30,” but require all four final details.
4Check the change and the spoken evidence
Open the transcript only after you have committed your answers.
Audio 1 transcript · open after listening
Hi, Maya. Are you free for lunch this Saturday? Yes, I am. Shall we try the new café near the station at one o’clock? I have a class until one. Could we meet at one thirty instead? One thirty works, but the new café may be busy. How about Green Kitchen? Perfect. So, lunch this Saturday at one thirty at Green Kitchen. Yes, that’s our final plan. See you there.
- Underline the word that signals a changed time.
- Box the phrase that introduces another place.
- Read the final confirmation, then close the transcript and repeat it from memory.
Teacher Help · Stage 4
Ask “Which exact words prove the change?” The learner should identify “instead,” “How about…” and the final “So…” confirmation before using the transcript for a short repair.
5Transfer · change and confirm a plan
Use the listening pattern in a short partner exchange.
A suggests: an activity, day, time and place.
B changes: one detail and gives a short reason.
A confirms: all four final details.
B checks: corrects anything that is wrong.
Change: Could we meet at ___ instead?
Alternative: How about ___?
Confirm: So, we’re meeting on ___ at ___ at ___.
- Complete the exchange once with the language bank.
- Switch roles and use a new activity.
- Close the language bank and confirm the second plan from memory.
Teacher Help · Stage 5
Model one change only, then remove support. Require the final speaker to confirm activity, day, time and place. Correct only the detail that makes the plan unclear.
6Final Practice · follow a changed message
Listen to Audio 2. Report what stays the same, what changes and the final plan.
- Listen once and write the time and place.
- Listen once more and identify what stays the same and what changes.
- Report the final plan in one complete sentence.
- Respond with: “Thanks. Two o’clock outside the library works for me.”
- After feedback, replay once and give a shorter, clearer retry.
Final answer and evidence
The final plan is to meet at 2:00 outside the library. The time stays the same. The place changes because the café is closed.
Audio 2 transcript · open after the task
Hi, it’s Mia. The time is still two o’clock, but the café is closed today. Please meet me outside the library instead. So, two o’clock outside the library. Call me if that doesn’t work.
Teacher Help · Stage 6
Allow up to two complete listening rounds without pausing. Keep the answer and transcript closed until the learner commits a response. Score the first independent attempt, give one focused correction and require one improved retry.
Teacher scoring guide · first independent attempt
0 · Not yet
The learner misses the final time or place and cannot give a clear confirmation after one neutral prompt.
1 · With support
The learner identifies the final time and place with replay, choices or a sentence frame, then confirms with support.
2 · Independent
The learner identifies what stays the same and what changes, reports the final plan accurately and gives a clear confirmation without transcript support.
