Directions, Position, and Movement

Move beyond basic left and right. This lesson helps you choose words that show the route, the landmark, the final position and what to do when a listener is unsure.

Why this lesson matters · เหตุผลที่เรียนบทนี้

For learners: Use precise movement, position, landmark and repair language to give a clear multi-step route.

For teachers: Learners compare easily confused route words by meaning, retrieve them through listening, build one route and repair a realistic misunderstanding before a less-supported final task.

Your goal

By the end of this lesson, you can use precise movement and position words to give a multi-step route and repair one misunderstanding.

Why this vocabulary matters

  • Precise words make a route easier to follow and reduce repeated explanations.
  • Comparing similar words helps you choose language by meaning, not memory alone.
  • Landmarks and an error check make directions usable in a real place.

Teacher Lesson Plan · Read before class

Before class: Check the map and both audio buttons. Use the vocabulary as tools for a real route, not as a list to read aloud.

  1. Introduce the five jobs that make directions clear.
  2. Contrast the movement and position words through meaning and examples.
  3. Play the two short models and sort the language jobs.
  4. Help the learner build one complete route.
  5. Create one misunderstanding for the learner to repair.
  6. Run Final Practice, score VR and FP, give one correction and retry.

Interaction rule: Ask the learner to choose, explain and use the words. Model briefly; do not read every entry as the main activity.

1See the five jobs direction vocabulary does

Student task

  1. Read the five job names.
  2. Say which two jobs are missing from this basic direction: “Turn left.”
  3. Choose one place on the map and add a landmark and final position.
MovementHow to move
SequenceWhat comes next
LandmarkWhat to notice
PositionWhere it is
Error checkHow to know you passed it
Clearer route: Go past the pharmacy, then cross the road at the bridge. The library is opposite the park. If you reach the bank, you have gone too far.

How to run Stage 1

Do not teach every word yet. Ask the learner why “Turn left” may fail in a real town. Elicit at least landmark and final position, then show the clearer route and let the learner identify all five jobs.

2Compare words that do different jobs

Choose the word from the meaning you need. Similar route words are not interchangeable.

past

Pass a point and continue beyond it.Walk past the pharmacy; do not stop there.

across

Move from one side to the other side.Walk across the road at the traffic lights.

along

Follow the length or line of something.Walk along the canal for two minutes.

through

Enter an area and leave it on another side.Go through the park and use the east gate.

towards

Move in a direction; arriving is not guaranteed.Walk towards the station, then turn before you reach it.

Final position

opposite

Facing or across from something. The library is opposite the park.

next to

Immediately beside something. The bank is next to the pharmacy.

between

In the middle of two places. The café is between the bank and the station.

beyond

Farther than or past a point. The bridge is just beyond the roundabout.

alongside

Next to and parallel with something. The path runs alongside the canal.

Quick meaning check

  1. You enter and leave the park: choose through, not along.
  2. You follow the canal: choose along or alongside, then explain the difference.
  3. You pass the bank and continue: choose past, not towards.
How to run Stage 2

Ask the learner to explain each contrast with a finger movement before making a sentence. Prioritise past/across/along/through/towards. Position words may be reviewed more quickly if the learner already uses them accurately.

3Listen and sort the language jobs

Student task

  1. Listen without reading the transcript.
  2. Write one movement word and one landmark or position phrase.
  3. Say whether the speaker gives a final position or an error check.

Route A

Engduo Audio · Indian English

Transcript — open after listening

Go past the pharmacy and continue towards the bridge. The library is directly opposite the small park.

Route B

Engduo Audio · British English

Transcript — open after listening

Take the second exit and follow the path alongside the canal. If you reach the stadium, you’ve gone too far.

Want to follow a full route by listening? Continue with Help a Visitor Find the Way →

How to run Stage 3

Play Route A once and ask for movement plus final position. Play Route B once and ask for movement plus error check. Replay only if needed. Open transcripts to confirm meaning, not for line-by-line reading.

4Build one clear route

Student task

  1. Start at the orange point.
  2. Choose one destination without saying it.
  3. Plan four parts: start, movement, landmark or final position, and error check.
  4. Give the route. Your teacher follows it on the map and names the destination.
Bridge: where the horizontal road crosses the canal · Roundabout: centre of the map

Route frame: Start at ___. First, ___. Then, ___ at/past ___. The ___ is ___. If you reach ___, you have gone too far.

How to run Stage 4

Let the learner choose a destination secretly. Follow the spoken route with your finger. If you cannot identify the destination, ask which of the four route parts is missing. Correct no more than two target words before one immediate retry.

5Guide your partner and repair one misunderstanding

Student task

  1. Choose a new destination and give the route.
  2. Your teacher deliberately repeats one detail incorrectly.
  3. Correct only that detail.
  4. Repeat the corrected route chunk and continue.
  • “Not across the canal—walk along it.”
  • “The library is opposite the park, not next to it.”
  • “Turn before the bridge. If you reach the stadium, you have gone too far.”

Ready for a full interaction? Practise both roles in Ask for and Give Directions →

How to run Stage 5

After the learner gives a route, repeat one detail with a realistic mistake, such as across instead of along. Ask, “So I cross the canal?” The learner should correct the word and repeat the whole route chunk. Do not introduce a new grammar task.

6Final Practice: New route, less support

Complete one 90-second route task

  1. Teacher chooses a new start and destination.
  2. Student gives a route using at least five suitable target chunks.
  3. Include a landmark, final position and error check.
  4. Teacher asks one clarification; student repairs the route.
  • VR: The student chooses precise movement, position and repair words.
  • FP: The listener reaches the destination and the unclear detail is repaired.
How to run Stage 6

Keep the map visible but partly cover the word list. Observe without interruption. Score VR and FP, give one vocabulary correction and one route correction, then repeat a shorter version so the learner can improve immediately.

Teacher scoring guide

Score the independent final attempt—not the supported practice.

VR · Vocabulary Range

0 · Not yet Relies mainly on teacher-supplied words or cannot yet choose vocabulary that fits the meaning.

1 · With support Uses some suitable target words after one prompt, model, or focused correction.

2 · Independent Chooses and uses a useful range of target words naturally in an original message.

FP · Functional Performance

0 · Not yet Cannot yet complete the stated communication outcome clearly enough for the listener.

1 · With support Completes the outcome after one clear prompt, repair, or supplied frame.

2 · Independent Completes the real communication outcome clearly without a model or supplied key sentence.
