Event agreement
Map the acceptable condition, negative exception and precaution.
Choose the precise linker for a negative exception, an acceptable limit, a formal requirement or a precaution.
For learners: Choose the precise relationship between condition and result—exception, acceptable limit, formal requirement or precaution—and negotiate a workable agreement.
For teachers: The route starts with communicative purpose, maps each purpose to linker and form, repairs false matches—especially in case versus if—then applies the choices in an independently negotiated four-part agreement.
Negotiate four practical terms using unless, as long as, provided that and in case accurately, reject or revise one unsuitable condition and confirm one useful precaution.
Small linker changes alter the agreement. They can remove an option, set an acceptable limit, impose a formal requirement or explain why a precaution happens before a possible event.

Ask what relationship the speaker needs before showing a linker: negative exception, acceptable limit, formal requirement or precaution. Treat `in case` as preparation before a possibility, never as a direct synonym for `if`.
| Stage | Teacher move | Evidence to collect |
|---|---|---|
| 1 · Meaning | Match four practical purposes before showing the linkers. | Eight purpose decisions |
| 2 · Form | Build both clause orders and ordinary future-time forms. | Eight accurate linker sentences |
| 3 · Repair | Contrast preparation before an event with response after a condition. | Six if/in case decisions + three repairs |
| 4 · Plan | Draft four negotiable terms and one safeguard from learner context. | One four-part agreement map |
| 5 · Check | Use two accents as input, then challenge one unsuitable term. | Two listening maps + first negotiation |
| 6 · Perform | Score the first agreement, target one mismatch and retry only that term. | Independent four-part agreement |
Start with the relationship the plan needs: negative exception, acceptable limit, formal requirement or precaution.
| Planning need | Your purpose | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| The outdoor event cannot continue if the storm warning becomes severe. | exception / limit / requirement / precaution | identify the blocking condition |
| The team accepts the new date only when everyone can attend. | exception / limit / requirement / precaution | set an acceptable boundary |
| Payment must arrive before the supplier confirms the order. | exception / limit / requirement / precaution | state a formal condition |
| Bring a charger now because the battery may run low later. | exception / limit / requirement / precaution | prepare before a possibility |
| You will take the train except when the line is closed. | exception / limit / requirement / precaution | name the negative exception |
| You can borrow the car only if you return it by six. | exception / limit / requirement / precaution | set the accepted limit |
| The venue agrees only when the deposit is paid. | exception / limit / requirement / precaution | make the requirement explicit |
| Save an offline map now because the signal may disappear. | exception / limit / requirement / precaution | prepare in advance |
Negative exception: 1 and 5. Acceptable limit: 2 and 6. Formal requirement: 3 and 7. Precaution: 4 and 8.
Keep the linkers hidden until the purpose sort is complete. Ask whether the speaker blocks an outcome, accepts it within a limit, imposes a requirement or prepares before a possible event. Do not reduce `in case` to “if”.
Connect each purpose to its linker, practise both clause orders and keep ordinary future-time clauses accurate.
| Linker and purpose | Core form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| unless · negative exception | unless + positive clause (= if … not) | We’ll go outside unless the storm gets worse. |
| as long as · acceptable limit | result + as long as + condition | You can use the room as long as you leave it tidy. |
| provided that · formal requirement | provided that + condition, result | Provided that the deposit arrives today, we’ll confirm the order. |
| in case · precaution | prepare now + in case + possible event | Take a charger in case the battery runs low. |
For ordinary future meaning, use a present form after the linker: “unless it rains”, not “unless it will rain”.
When the linker clause comes first, use a comma before the result. When it comes second, a comma is usually unnecessary.
“We’ll postpone the trip unless the weather improves” means “We’ll postpone the trip if the weather does not improve.” Do not add another negative after unless.
Correct purpose before punctuation. Watch for double negatives after `unless`, `will` after the linker and overformal `provided that` in casual small requests. Have learners read both clause orders aloud to preserve meaning.
Decide whether an action happens before a possible event as preparation or only after a condition becomes true.
| Intended action | Your choice | Meaning to explain |
|---|---|---|
| Take an umbrella now because rain is possible. | if / in case | preparation before the event |
| Open the umbrella only when rain begins. | if / in case | response after the condition |
| Save the address offline now because the signal may disappear. | if / in case | advance safeguard |
| Call support only after the connection fails. | if / in case | conditional response |
| Pack medicine now because you may feel unwell. | if / in case | preparation before travel |
| Take the medicine only when symptoms appear. | if / in case | action after evidence |
in case: 1, 3, 5 — preparation happens before the possible event. if: 2, 4, 6 — the action happens only when the condition becomes true.
“Take an umbrella in case it rains later.” · “Call me if the train is cancelled.” · “We’ll go unless it rains.”
Use a simple timeline: precaution now → possible event later for `in case`; condition becomes true → response for `if`. Do not correct by translation alone. Require learners to say when the first action occurs.
Turn four different condition purposes into negotiable terms and one sensible safeguard.
| Purpose | Planning note | Negotiation question |
|---|---|---|
| Negative exception | outdoor event · continue unless storm warning becomes severe | What exactly would stop the plan? |
| Acceptable limit | finish by six · use venue as long as room is tidy | Is this limit practical for both sides? |
| Formal requirement | deposit today · booking confirmed provided that payment arrives | Can both sides verify the requirement? |
| Precaution | bring portable light in case power fails | Does this prepare us before the risk? |
Keep notes short so Stage 6 is negotiated, not read. Test whether `provided that` sounds appropriately formal and whether the `in case` action is a real precaution. Require one term that is genuinely open to revision.
Recover the permissions, limits, requirements and safeguards, then challenge one condition before your first agreement.
Map the acceptable condition, negative exception and precaution.
Identify the formal requirement, acceptable limit and backup preparation.
Audio never starts automatically. Use the British recording first and the American recording for transfer. If the learner hears the linker but not its purpose, replay the decision and condition together. Do not reveal a model before the learner identifies the relationship.
Reach an independent four-part agreement and improve one precise linker–purpose weakness.
Result: 0–2 Rebuild · 3–4 Developing · 5–6 B1 mastery evidence.
Score the first independent agreement across MEAN, FORM and USE. Give one target only: “name the condition purpose”, “remove the double negative”, “use present after the linker”, “separate in case from if” or “make the safeguard practical”. Keep the original score and record whether the focused retry improves that target.
You can now use unless, as long as, provided that and in case to negotiate precise terms, repair an unsuitable condition and protect a plan with a practical safeguard. Use the Dynamic Learning Graph below for the next step.
