A useful summary is selective. It gives the topic, strong evidence, a clearly labelled evaluation and any important next step.

Ask “Would removing this detail change the main meaning?” Accept several defensible choices, but require the learner to keep the event, core evidence and any condition attached to a future claim.

2. Separate fact from opinion

Fictional report: On Saturday, Northbridge Community Centre opened a repair café. Twenty-six residents brought broken lamps, fans and small kitchen items. Volunteers repaired eighteen items and showed visitors how to fix simple faults. The centre manager called the event “a strong start for a greener neighbourhood.” One visitor said the waiting time was too long. The centre will run a second session next month if at least ten volunteers register.

  4. Explain one clue: a number, a source phrase or evaluative language.

Guide with “Can we verify it?” and “Whose judgement is this?” A quotation is evidence that someone expressed a view; it does not turn that view into a fact.

Score Communication, Vocabulary Range and Final Performance separately. Name one success, then correct the single most important meaning issue and one language issue only. Require an improved retry of that segment, not a complete second performance.
