What happened
During two project meetings, Lina spoke only when asked, took detailed notes, and left immediately after each meeting.
B2 · Observe, qualify, listen, revise, and explain
For learners: Evaluate first impressions and revise them using evidence.
For teachers: Move from precise personality language to evidence-based judgement, fair revision and independent B2 mastery.
Evaluate an initial character judgement, separate observation from inference, calibrate how certain you are, integrate new evidence, and communicate a fair revised assessment.
For learners: First impressions influence teamwork, interviews and relationships, but one behaviour rarely proves a fixed character trait. Fair language lets you explain what you noticed without turning limited evidence into a label.
For teachers: The lesson produces visible evidence from observation, inference control, calibrated language, listening, revision, challenge response and an improved retry.
Do not reward confident labels. Require the learner to name the observation, explain the inference, calibrate certainty and revise the judgement when new evidence appears.
| Time | Teacher does | Student does | Required evidence |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0–3 | Introduces the first-impression case without confirming a character label. | Separates visible behaviour from an initial judgement. | Two observations and one provisional inference. |
| 3–7 | Tests evidence strength and alternative explanations. | Qualifies claims and names missing evidence. | One calibrated judgement and one evidence gap. |
| 7–12 | Changes the relationship and context. | Adapts wording for interview, team and social contexts. | Three context-appropriate descriptions. |
| 12–17 | Plays both audios with transcripts closed. | Tracks the original judgement, new evidence and revision. | A fair summary and one evidence-based response. |
| 17–23 | Challenges certainty, fairness and relevance. | Builds a balanced revised assessment. | Observation, interpretation, hedge and revision. |
| 23–30 | Observes, scores, challenges and gives focused feedback. | Performs independently, answers and retries. | Two 0–2 scores and an improved judgement. |
Start with behaviour, not a label. The case is fictional.
During two project meetings, Lina spoke only when asked, took detailed notes, and left immediately after each meeting.
A colleague described her as distant, uninterested and difficult to work with.
If the learner repeats “distant” as evidence, ask what a camera or audio recorder could capture. Accept actions as observations and treat personality words as interpretations.
Match each analytical move with language that shows the correct level of certainty.
| Move | Question | Useful language |
|---|---|---|
| Observation | What happened directly? | She spoke only when invited. |
| Inference | What might that behaviour mean? | This may give the impression that… |
| Alternative | What else could explain it? | An equally plausible explanation is… |
| Evidence limit | What remains unknown? | On this evidence alone, we cannot conclude that… |
Require a real alternative explanation, not a synonym. Useful prompts: “What context is missing?” and “What new behaviour would change your view?”
The same observation carries different risks depending on the relationship and purpose.
Discuss behaviour, impact and a useful next step without assigning a fixed identity.
Record job-relevant evidence while avoiding unsupported personality claims.
Use lighter, provisional language and protect the person’s dignity.
Do not accept the same sentence three times. Ask what action the listener may take and how an unsupported label could affect that decision.
Track the original judgement, the evidence problem and the revised description.
Listen for the initial label, the observation and the evidence limit.
Listen for the new evidence and revised judgement.
Keep transcripts closed. Play both audios once for the judgement shift and once for evidence. Allow another replay only after the learner identifies the missing detail.
A fair assessment can be useful without pretending to be final.
Name the behaviour and context precisely.
Explain what the behaviour may suggest and calibrate certainty.
Show how stronger evidence changed the judgement and what remains unknown.
If the learner simply replaces one fixed label with another, ask for a hedge and an evidence limit. The goal is a better judgement, not a more positive label.
Analyse a new fictional case, answer one challenge and improve the assessment.
New case: Arun joins a volunteer group. In the first planning session he questions three suggestions, checks the budget twice and refuses to promise a delivery date. Some members call him negative and controlling. Later, he discovers a supplier error, offers two workable alternatives and asks another member to lead the final decision.
Teacher challenge — choose one: Arun questions every idea again next week; the budget concern proves incorrect; or another member says he interrupts quieter people.
Score the first independent performance.
Record one action-focused reason for the score.
Observe the full first performance without interruption. Give one success note and one correction for each scoring dimension. Run the retry immediately with fewer visible prompts.
Observation, inference, alternative explanation, hedge, revised judgement and evidence limit.
Language precision and hedging: ___ / 2
Evidence-based revision: ___ / 2
Total: ___ / 4
What became more precise, fair or evidence-based?
