Vocabulary Builder · B2

Objective and Subjective Description

Separate what people can verify from the impression a design creates—then use both kinds of language accurately.

Why this lesson matters · เหตุผลที่เรียนบทนี้

For learners: A precise description separates details that anyone can verify from your personal reaction. This helps you sound fair, credible, and clear when discussing products, spaces, or designs.

For teachers: The lesson extends TF02 from identifying physical detail to evaluating how a speaker frames evidence and impression at B2.

Your goal

By the end of this lesson, you can describe one design with accurate observable details and clearly signalled personal impressions.

เป้าหมายภาษาไทย

เมื่อจบบทเรียน คุณจะสามารถบรรยายงานออกแบบหนึ่งชิ้นโดยใช้รายละเอียดที่ตรวจสอบได้อย่างถูกต้อง และบอกความรู้สึกส่วนตัวด้วยถ้อยคำที่แยกออกจากข้อเท็จจริงอย่างชัดเจน

Progress Focus · VR · FP
VR · Vocabulary RangeUse precise observable-detail and impression words, with signals that keep the two groups distinct.
FP · Functional PerformanceGive a connected description that lets a listener identify the design and understand your viewpoint.

Teacher Lesson Plan · Read before class

Outcome: The learner describes one design using at least three observable details and two clearly signalled impressions, then explains the distinction.

Prepare: Choose two contrasting real objects or designs. Avoid objects whose quality can be judged only by brand or price.

Teaching move: Ask “Can we check it?” before accepting a detail as observable. Ask “Whose response is this?” before accepting an impression.

Evidence: VR = accurate range from both groups; FP = a listener identifies the design and understands the speaker’s evaluation without a model.

Stage 1 · Purpose

Can everyone verify the same thing?

3 min

Compare the two statements. Decide which one can be checked and which one depends on the speaker.

Statement A

“The lamp has a round metal base and a matte grey shade.”

Test: Can you verify it by looking, touching, counting, or measuring?

Statement B

“The lamp looks calm, elegant, and professional.”

Test: Could another person reasonably form a different impression?

Working distinction: An observation is checkable. An impression is a personal response and should be signalled as one.

Teacher Help · Stage 1

Do not turn this into a debate about whether an opinion is “correct.” Ask what evidence is visible and which words reveal a personal response.

Stage 2 · Organise

Build two clearly separated language groups

5 min

Observable detail · ตรวจสอบได้

Language What it reports
rectangular / curved shape or line
symmetrical / asymmetrical arrangement
matte / glossy finish and reflected light
smooth / textured surface
made of … material
measures / features / has … size, parts, or countable detail

Personal impression · ความรู้สึกส่วนตัว

Language Possible response
elegant / refined controlled, polished effect
striking / playful strong or lively effect
calming / welcoming emotional response
plain / dated critical evaluation
practical-looking perceived usefulness
cluttered / sophisticated overall judgement
Observable: It has / features / measures …   Impression: To me … / From my perspective … / It gives the impression of …
Teacher Help · Stage 2

Keep “plain” in the impression group here: people may disagree about how much visual detail counts as plain. Contrast it with a checkable phrase such as “it has no printed pattern.”

Stage 3 · Listen

Hear observation and impression side by side

5 min

Audio A01 · Australian accent · Olivia Neural

First listen for the change from checkable detail to personal response. Listen again and repeat the phrases that signal an opinion.

Compare these two descriptions. First, the observable description. The lamp has a round metal base, a narrow stem, and a matte grey shade. Now listen to the personal impression. To me, the lamp looks clean, restrained, and professional. Notice the difference. The first description can be checked by looking or measuring. The second depends on the speaker’s response. Another person may form a different impression. When you describe a design, state the observable details first, and signal your opinion with phrases such as “To me” or “From my perspective.”

Teacher Help · Stage 3

Keep the transcript closed on the first listen. On the second, ask the learner to raise one finger for an observation and two fingers for an impression.

Stage 4 · Retrieve

Classify each statement and give the test

4 min

1. “It measures 42 centimetres.”
2. “It feels sophisticated.”
3. “The surface is glossy and black.”
4. “From my perspective, it looks dated.”

Teacher Help · Stage 4

After the learner chooses, require the test: “We can check it by …” or “Another person could reasonably disagree because …” Give the category only after a failed second attempt.

Stage 5 · Build

Create a factual sentence and an impression

5 min

Observable
The chair has a curved wooden frame, a textured cream seat, and two visible support bars.
Impression
To me, the chair feels warm and welcoming, although another person might call it plain.

Your turn: Choose two objects near you. For each object, write one checkable sentence and one clearly signalled impression.

Practice notes stay only in this browser field and disappear when the page is refreshed. Copy them elsewhere if you want to keep them.

Teacher Help · Stage 5

Check the observable sentence before the impression. If the learner states an opinion as fact, ask for a signal phrase instead of supplying a replacement sentence.

Stage 6 · Apply

Compare two designs for a real briefing

4 min

Audio A02 · British accent · Amy Neural

Listen twice. Note the verifiable details and the opinion words, then recommend one design for a calm reading area.

Open transcript after two listens

Design one has a curved wooden frame, a textured cream seat, and two visible support bars. To me, it feels warm and welcoming, although another person might call it plain. Design two has a straight metal frame, a glossy black surface, and four narrow legs. It gives a sharper, more formal impression. Which details can you verify by looking, touching, counting, or measuring? Which words express an opinion? Listen again, then choose the design that would suit a calm reading area and explain your choice with one observation and one clearly signalled impression.

Practice notes are temporary and are not saved after refresh.

Teacher Help · Stage 6

Accept either recommendation if the learner supports it with one accurate observation and one explicitly signalled impression. Replay at 0.8× before opening the transcript.

Final Practice · Independent use · 4 min

Describe one design and make your viewpoint clear

Task: Choose one object, product, room, or design. Without using the word tables or your notes, give a 20–30 second description with:

  • at least three observable details,
  • two personal impressions with clear signal phrases,
  • one sentence explaining which details can be verified.

Success: Your listener identifies the design, separates your observations from your impressions, and gives the intended recommendation.

VR · Vocabulary Range

0 · Not yet: Cannot separate or use the two language groups accurately.

1 · With support: Uses suitable words after one category or sentence-starter prompt.

2 · Independent: Uses an accurate range from both groups with clear signals.

FP · Functional Performance

0 · Not yet: The listener cannot identify the design or separate fact from viewpoint.

1 · With support: The listener succeeds after one clarification or teacher prompt.

2 · Independent: Gives a clear connected description and the listener makes the intended choice.
