Describe what an object is made of, how it feels, and what pattern it has—then help a partner identify it.
For learners: Add material, texture, and pattern details so your descriptions are more precise and useful in everyday situations.
For teachers: The lesson recycles the A1 identification purpose, then adds three A2 detail groups through audio, retrieval, connected descriptions, and one independent task.
By the end of this lesson, you can describe the material, texture, and pattern of a useful object so a partner can identify it.
Outcome: The learner describes one unseen useful object with accurate material, texture, and pattern details; the listener identifies it.
Prepare: Put 4–6 safe everyday objects with contrasting materials or patterns on a table. Keep one object hidden for Final Practice.
Teaching move: Model the order material → texture → pattern, reduce support during retrieval, and correct only after the learner finishes a complete description.
Evidence: VR = chooses at least three accurate target words; FP = gives a connected description that lets the listener identify the object without a model.
3 min
Look at the four objects. For each one, say one detail about material, texture, or pattern. Then decide which detail is most useful for identification.
wooden spoon
wood · smooth grain
metal bottle
hard · smooth · shiny
cotton pouch
soft · striped
ceramic cup
hard · floral
Ask the learner to point before speaking. Prompt with “What is it made of?”, “How does it feel?”, and “Does it have a pattern?” Accept one accurate detail first, then ask which clue best separates the objects.

| Word | Useful clue |
|---|---|
| wood | natural grain; often firm |
| metal | hard; often smooth or shiny |
| plastic | light; often smooth |
| glass | hard; smooth; sometimes clear |
| cotton | soft; woven fabric |
| leather | smooth or textured; firm |
| Word | Opposite / clue |
|---|---|
| smooth | not rough |
| rough | uneven surface |
| soft | not hard |
| hard | firm surface |
| shiny | reflects light |
| dull | does not reflect much light |
| Word | What you see |
|---|---|
| plain | no pattern |
| striped | lines |
| spotted | small round marks |
| checked | crossing lines and squares |
| floral | flowers or leaves |
Teach the groups through contrasts: smooth ↔ rough, soft ↔ hard, shiny ↔ dull, plain ↔ patterned. Keep “made of” with materials and “feels/looks” with surface details.
5 min
First listen and touch the correct word group. Then listen again and repeat one complete example from each group.
Wood. The spoon is made of wood. You can see the natural grain. Metal. The bottle is made of metal. It feels hard and smooth. Plastic. The storage box is made of plastic. It is light but strong. Glass. The bowl is made of glass. It is smooth and shiny. Cotton. The pouch is made of cotton. It feels soft. Leather. The wallet is made of leather. It feels smooth but firm. Rough. The stone has a rough surface. Smooth. The metal bottle has a smooth surface. Soft. The cotton pouch feels soft. Hard. The glass bowl feels hard. Shiny. The bowl reflects the light, so it looks shiny. Dull. The old wooden tray does not reflect much light, so it looks dull. Plain. A plain object has no pattern. Striped. A striped object has lines. Spotted. A spotted object has small round marks. Checked. A checked pattern has crossing lines that make squares. Floral. A floral pattern shows flowers or leaves.
Keep the transcript closed on the first listen. Pause after material, texture, and pattern groups if needed. Ask the learner to repeat full chunks such as “made of metal” rather than isolated words only.
4 min
After each answer, ask for one reason: “What does it look or feel like?” If recall is slow, give the category—material, texture, or pattern—before giving the first sound.
5 min
Your turn: Choose two objects near you. Give one description with two detail groups, then one with all three groups.
Prompt in this order: material → texture/finish → pattern. After the learner succeeds, remove the frame and ask for a second description with a natural connector such as “and” or “but.”
4 min
Listen and match Objects 1–4 to choices A–D. Use material first, then texture or pattern to confirm each answer.
1 = A plain metal bottle · 2 = B striped cotton pouch · 3 = C floral ceramic cup · 4 = D rough grey stone
Object one is made of metal. It is hard, smooth, and shiny. It is tall and plain, with no pattern. You can carry water in it. Object two is made of cotton. It feels soft, and it has a striped pattern in blue, cream, and orange. You can use it to carry small things. Object three is made of ceramic. It feels hard and smooth. It has a floral pattern, and you can drink from it. Object four is natural and grey. It feels hard and rough. It has no regular pattern, and it fits in one hand.
Ask the learner to name the first clue that narrowed the choice and the second clue that confirmed it. Replay once at 0.8× before opening the transcript and key.
Task: Choose one useful object and keep it hidden. Without using the word tables or your notes, give a 15–20 second description with:
Success: Your partner identifies the correct object without seeing it and without asking for a model sentence.
0 · Not yet: Cannot choose words that match the material, surface, or pattern.
1 · With support: Uses suitable words after one category prompt.
2 · Independent: Uses accurate words from all three detail groups.
0 · Not yet: The description is too incomplete to identify the object.
1 · With support: Completes the description after one prompt or clarification.
2 · Independent: Gives a connected description and the partner identifies the object.
