Learn clear words for describing an everyday object, then give enough detail for a partner to identify it.
For learners: Learn a small, useful set of shape, colour, and size words so another person can identify the correct object.
For teachers: The lesson moves from noticing and organising concrete words to listening, retrieval, guided description, and one independent object-identification task.
By the end of this lesson, you can describe one familiar object clearly enough for a partner to identify it.
Outcome: The learner describes one unseen object with shape, colour, and size details; the listener identifies it.
Prepare: Put 4–6 safe everyday objects on a table or use the object cards on this page. Keep one object hidden for Final Practice.
Teaching move: Model one short description, reduce support during retrieval, and save correction until the learner finishes each description.
Evidence: VR = chooses at least three accurate target words; FP = gives a complete description that lets the listener identify the object without a model.
3 min
Look at the four objects. Point to the object when you hear each clue: round, blue and square, yellow and triangular, green and rectangular.
red circle
blue square
yellow triangle
green rectangle
Ask the learner to point before speaking. Then ask: “What helped you—the shape or the colour?” Accept one-word answers at first.

First listen and point. Then listen again and repeat the final example in each group.
Circle. A circle is round. Square. A square has four straight sides. Triangle. A triangle has three sides. Rectangle. A rectangle has two long sides and two short sides. Red. The ball is red. Blue. The box is blue. Green. The cup is green. Yellow. The block is yellow. Big. The notebook is big. Small. The key is small. Light. The small cup is light blue. Dark. The big bag is dark blue.
Do not open the transcript on the first listen. Pause after a word group if needed. Correct only one sound at a time; clarity matters more than accent imitation.
5 min
Ask for the reason after each answer: “How do you know?” If recall is slow, give the first sound, not the full word.
5 min
Your turn: Choose two objects near you. Say one description with two details, then one with three details.
Keep the first attempt short. Prompt in this order: size → colour → shape. After the learner succeeds, remove the prompt and ask for a second object.
4 min
Listen and match Objects 1–4 to the choices A–D. Play it again at 0.8× if needed.
1 = B red ball · 2 = C blue box · 3 = D yellow block · 4 = A white card
Ask the learner to underline the clue that decided each answer. Replay only once before opening the key so listening remains purposeful.
Task: Choose one familiar object and keep it hidden. Without using the word tables or your notes, give a 15–20 second description with:
Success: Your partner identifies the correct object without seeing it and without needing a model sentence.
