30-minute lesson route
Combine number and distance

Use one nearby item, one distant item, several nearby items, and several distant items. Decide number first, then distance.
How to run Stage 1
3 min: Establish four object groups by number and distance.
Choose the singular or plural form
One: this or that + singular noun + is. More than one: these or those + plural noun + are. Compare: This bag is mine. Those bags are yours.
How to run Stage 2
5 min: Contrast singular this/that with plural these/those.
Identify the intended object
Engduo Audio: Listen for meaning first. Audio never starts automatically.
Listen for number, distance, and the corrected choice.
Locate each object from the demonstrative and place phrase.
Listen to both exchanges. Point to or mark each object. Note the first choice, the correction, and the final confirmed item.
How to run Stage 3
5 min: Add distance, location, and one identifying detail.
Add one useful identifying detail
Build noun phrases with colour, location, or owner: that black notebook near the window; these two keys on the desk. Keep the demonstrative consistent with number.
How to run Stage 4
6 min: Play both exchanges and locate each intended object.
Complete an identify-and-choose challenge
Arrange or picture eight objects. Your partner requests four items without naming them directly. Identify each item, ask one clarification question, and correct one wrong choice.
How to run Stage 5
7 min: Run four requests, clarification, and correction.
Final practice: Identify and confirm the correct objects
Task: Complete four object requests using all four demonstratives. Add identifying details, ask one clarification question, and correct one wrong choice.
Success: Number and distance match the demonstrative, the listener identifies the intended objects, and the learner repairs the wrong choice independently.
LC · Language Control
0 Frequent form problems obscure the intended meaning.
1 Meaning remains clear with some prompting or self-correction.
2 Controls this/that/these/those with singular or plural nouns and matching be forms.
FP · Functional Performance
0 Does not yet complete the communication outcome.
1 Completes most of the outcome with visible prompts.
2 Completes four requests, one clarification, and one correction independently.
How to run Stage 6
4 min: Score LC and FP, repair one number-distance mismatch, and retry two requests.
