Why this lesson matters · เหตุผลที่เรียนบทนี้

For learners: Information can change during an incident. Learners need to replace an earlier plan with the current priority without mixing instructions.

For teachers: Two linked announcements require the learner to compare old and new information, identify update markers, assign responsibility, and give an independent current-action briefing.

Your goal

Track changing information and identify the new priority and responsible action.

Why this listening skill matters

  • You can distinguish background information from the instruction that controls action now.
  • You can explain exactly what changed and why the earlier plan no longer applies.
  • You can identify who is responsible and give a concise updated briefing.

1Predict what may change

Use the language clues to predict how an updated announcement may reorganise the plan.

as a precautiontemporarily restrictedupdated announcementmust remain clearhas movednow responsiblereplaces the earlier plan
STUDENT TASK
  1. Sort the clues into initial plan, change signal, and new responsibility.
  2. Choose two phrases that tell you the newest information is more important.
  3. Predict one place, action, or responsibility that might change.
Teacher Help

Accept several predictions. Confirm only the function of update markers such as “now” and “replaces”; do not reveal the route or responsible person.

2First listen · understand the initial plan

Listen once without reading. Focus on the situation, the first destination, and the roles.

Audio 1 · British English · Arthur · 21 seconds
STUDENT TASK
  1. Why are people being moved?
  2. Where should they go according to the initial plan?
  3. What should team leaders and visitors do?
Check the gist

People must leave the west meeting rooms while an electrical smell is checked. The initial destination is the main reception area. Team leaders bring attendance lists, and visitors stay with their hosts.

Teacher Help

Play once at normal speed. Require a one-sentence gist plus the initial destination. If needed, ask which room or route words the learner heard; do not replay yet.

3Second listen · catch the update

Replay Audio 1 once, then listen to Audio 2. Record the before-and-after information.

Audio 1 · initial plan · second listening
Audio 2 · Indian English · Kajal · 29 seconds
Earlier information

Restricted area: __________
Destination: __________
Team leader action: __________

Updated information

Area that must stay clear: __________
New destination: __________
New reporting responsibility: __________

STUDENT TASK
  1. Write keywords, not full sentences.
  2. Mark each detail same, changed, or new.
  3. Circle the instruction that controls action now.
Answer check

Earlier: west corridor restricted; move to main reception; team leaders bring attendance lists. Updated: west corridor closed; reception must remain clear; move to the east courtyard beside the café entrance; team leaders check attendance there and report anyone missing to the safety coordinator.

Teacher Help

Allow one replay of Audio 1 and one play of Audio 2. Required evidence: old destination, new destination, new priority, responsible role, and reporting action.

4Check the evidence

Open the transcripts only after you have committed your answers.

Audio 1 transcript · initial plan

Attention, everyone in the Riverside Conference Centre. As a precaution, please leave the west meeting rooms and move to the main reception area. The west corridor is temporarily restricted while the facilities team checks an electrical smell. Team leaders should bring their attendance lists. Visitors should remain with their hosts. Please walk calmly and wait for further instructions.

Audio 2 transcript · updated plan

This is an updated safety announcement. The west corridor is now closed, and the main reception area must remain clear for safety staff. Do not continue toward reception. The assembly point has moved to the east courtyard, beside the café entrance. Team leaders are now responsible for checking attendance there and reporting anyone missing to the safety coordinator. Visitors should stay with their hosts and follow the green route signs. This updated instruction replaces the earlier plan.

STUDENT TASK
  1. Underline three update markers: one for time, one for changed location, and one for replacement.
  2. Box the sentence that cancels movement toward reception.
  3. Highlight the role, action, destination, and person receiving the report.
  4. Correct two entries in your update map if needed.
Teacher Help

Ask “Which exact words cancel the earlier plan?” and “Which phrase assigns responsibility?” Keep the focus on evidence, not translation of every sentence.

5Transfer the update into a briefing

Report the change so another person acts on the current instruction, not the first one.

Change: The earlier plan was to…, but the latest announcement says…

Priority: The priority now is to…

Responsibility: … is responsible for…, and … should…

STUDENT TASK
  1. Give a 30-second briefing to a colleague who heard only Audio 1.
  2. Name the old plan once, then focus on the current destination and priority.
  3. State the team leader’s responsibility and the visitor’s action.
  4. Finish with: “This replaces the earlier plan.”
Possible briefing

The earlier plan was to move to reception, but the latest announcement says reception must remain clear. The priority now is to follow the green signs to the east courtyard beside the café entrance. Team leaders are responsible for checking attendance there and reporting anyone missing. Visitors should stay with their hosts. This replaces the earlier plan.

Teacher Help

Model only the three-part frame, then hide it. Check that the learner leads with the change, names the current priority, and assigns responsibility accurately.

6Final Practice · give the current action briefing

Listen to the two announcements again. Use only keywords and produce an independent update report.

Audio 1 · British English · initial plan
Audio 2 · Indian English · update
FINAL LISTENING TASK
  1. State the initial situation and destination in one sentence.
  2. Explain the two operational changes.
  3. Name the new priority and assembly point.
  4. Identify who checks attendance, who receives the missing-person report, and what visitors do.
  5. Give a 40–50 second briefing without opening either transcript.
GISTIdentifies the electrical-smell check, movement purpose, and initial plan.
UPDATESeparates reception from the new east-courtyard assembly point and explains that reception must stay clear.
ACTIONAssigns attendance and reporting duties correctly and gives the current visitor action.
Teacher Help

Allow up to two complete listening rounds. Do not pause, supply vocabulary, or reopen transcripts. Score the current priority and responsibility—not memory of every word.

Teacher scoring guide

0 · Not yet

The learner follows the replaced plan or cannot identify the responsible action after one neutral prompt.

1 · With support

The learner tracks most changes but needs replay, choices, or a language frame to report the current priority.

2 · Independent

The learner distinguishes old and new information, identifies the priority, and assigns responsibility accurately without a model.
