Why this lesson matters ·

For learners: You can help a visitor choose a suitable familiar place and follow a clear route from a known starting point.

For teachers: The six-stage path moves from place facts to listening, evidence matching, recommendation, route repair, and one independent community task.

Your Goal

Understand what a visitor needs, choose the right familiar town place, give one clear reason, explain a three- to four-step route, and check that the visitor understands.

Teacher Lesson Plan · Read before class

Keep the town and routes fictional. In Stages 1–5, support the learner with the place cards and route frames. In Final Practice, play Audio 2 twice and do not supply a model until the independent response is complete.

TimeTeacher doesStudent does
0–3Introduces the three places and checks key vocabulary.Names each place and one useful feature.
3–7Plays Audio 1 twice; keeps the transcript closed.Records purpose, time, starting point, and needs.
7–12Asks for evidence and challenges one weak match.Matches visitor needs to stated place facts.
12–17Requests a choice, reason, and rejected option.Recommends one place in a short response.
17–23Roleplays the visitor and asks one interruption question.Gives the route, repairs one detail, and confirms.
23–30Plays unseen Audio 2 twice and observes.Chooses, explains, routes, and checks independently.

1. Read the town choices

3 min

A good recommendation starts with the visitor’s purpose, not your favourite place.

Riverside Market

Best for: local gifts and quick food

Facts: lively, mostly outdoors, toilets; 12 minutes from Central Station or 5 minutes from Market Square.

Community Centre

Best for: local information and indoor waiting

Facts: information desk, seats, toilets, water; 14 minutes from Central Station; no shops.

STUDENT TASK
  1. Name the best place for quiet work.
  2. Name the best place for a local gift.
  3. Name the place with an information desk.
  4. Say one question you need before you can recommend a place.
You are ready whenYou can connect each place to a clear visitor purpose.
Teacher Help

Pre-teach only the words that block the task: indoor, gift, information desk, starting point. Keep this stage to three minutes and do not choose a place before hearing the visitor.

2. Listen for the visitor’s needs

4 min

Listen once for the main purpose. Listen again for time, starting point, and useful details.

Audio 1 · British English · Amy Neural · 19 seconds

First listening: purpose. Second listening: time, starting point, and three needs.

STUDENT TASK
  1. What does Nina want to do?
  2. How much time does she have?
  3. Where is she starting?
  4. Write three things the place should have.
Visitor noteNina wants __________. She has __________ and starts at __________. She needs __________, __________, and __________.
You are ready whenYour note contains the purpose, time, starting point, and three stated needs.

Hi, I’m Nina. I have about fifty minutes before my train. I’d like a quiet indoor place where I can sit, use free Wi-Fi, and get some drinking water. I don’t need food or shopping today. I’m starting at Central Station. Which place would you recommend, and how do I get there?
Teacher Help · audio order

Play once without pausing. Ask only “What does Nina want?” Then play again for details. Keep the transcript closed until both listens are complete.

3. Match needs to facts

5 min

Use the place cards as evidence. Do not add a service that is not listed.

Visitor needEvidenceResult
A quiet indoor placeThe Town Library is indoors and suitable for quiet time.Strong match
Free Wi-Fi and a seatThe Town Library has both.Strong match
Drinking waterThe library and community centre both list drinking water.Strong match
Food and shoppingNina says she does not need these today. Not needed today
STUDENT TASK
  1. Find three facts that support the Town Library.
  2. Find one fact that supports the Community Centre.
  3. Explain why the Riverside Market is a weak match today.
  4. Choose the statement that uses evidence correctly.

You are ready whenYour choice points to a fact on the place card.
Teacher Help

Ask “Which fact tells you that?” Accept the Community Centre as a possible partial match, but require the learner to compare its purpose and longer route with the library.

4. Choose and explain

5 min

Give a short recommendation: place, reason, and one comparison.

Choose

I recommend the Town Library.

Give a reason

It is quiet and indoors, and it has free Wi-Fi and drinking water.

Compare

The Community Centre has water, but the library is closer and better for quiet time.

STUDENT TASK
  1. Recommend one place to Nina.
  2. Give one clear reason with two facts.
  3. Say why one other place is not as suitable today.
  4. Keep your answer between 25 and 40 seconds.
Recommendation frameI recommend __________ because __________. The __________ has __________, but it is not as suitable today because __________.
You are ready whenNina can hear the choice, the evidence, and one simple comparison.
Teacher Help

Allow the frame for the first attempt, then remove it. If the learner lists features without a reason, prompt once: “Why is that useful for Nina?”

5. Guide the visitor

6 min

Start from Central Station and give one instruction at a time.

1 · Start

Leave Central Station by the south exit.

2 · Move

Cross at the traffic lights and go straight along King Street.

3–4 · Arrive

Pass the bank. The library is on your left, opposite the pharmacy.

STUDENT TASK
  1. Give the full route in three or four steps.
  2. Use at least two route phrases: leave, cross, go straight, pass, on your left, opposite.
  3. Answer Nina’s question: “Do I turn before or after the bank?”
  4. Repair the route if needed and finish with a confirmation question.
Useful repair
Sorry, let me make that clear. Don’t turn at the bank. Go past it, and the library is on your left.
Confirmation choicesIs that clear? · Would you like me to repeat the last step? · Are you starting at the south exit?
You are ready whenThe route has a clear start, correct order, landmark, destination, and one check.
Teacher Help · visitor role

Interrupt once with the bank question. Listen for a short repair, not a full restart. Do not score accent; score whether the route remains clear and ordered.

6. Final Practice · choose, route, and check

7 min

Listen to a new visitor, then complete the full community task without a model.

Audio 2 · Australian English · Olivia Neural · 16 seconds

Listen twice. Keep the transcript closed until the complete response is finished.

FINAL PRACTICE
  1. State Sam’s purpose, time, and starting point.
  2. Choose the best place from the three place cards.
  3. Give one clear reason with two stated facts.
  4. Give this route from Market Square: walk past the café, turn right onto the river path, and find the market entrance on the left just before the small bridge.
  5. Use one clarification question before the route or one confirmation question after it.
  6. Speak for 45–75 seconds without a supplied model.

Hello. I have forty minutes before my bus. I want to buy a small local gift and get a quick snack. I don’t need a quiet place, but I need to stay close to Market Square. Could you choose the best place, give me a short route, and check that I can return to the bus stop on time?

Final Practice evidence

FIT · Place fitChooses Riverside Market and connects the choice to the visitor’s gift, food, and location needs.
RTE · RouteGives the three-step route from Market Square in a clear order with the bridge landmark.
CHK · CheckUses one relevant clarification or confirmation question without a supplied model.

Teacher scoring guide

Score the first independent Final Practice. Target: at least 5 out of 6, including RTE = 2.

0 · Not yetThe criterion is not demonstrated after one clear prompt.
1 · With supportThe criterion is partly demonstrated or needs supplied language.
2 · IndependentThe criterion is clear without a model. Natural A2 hesitation is acceptable.

Feedback and retry: name one observable success; choose one missing criterion; replay only the needed audio once; allow one focused retry; record the new score separately.

The lesson is complete whenYou can choose a suitable place, give a simple evidence-based reason, explain a short route, and check understanding independently.
Teacher Help

Play Audio 2 twice. Give one neutral repetition if requested, but do not supply the destination or route language. Score FIT, RTE, and CHK after the full response, then give one focused retry only.

Optional review after class ·

EN: Record the final answer again in under 60 seconds. Then change the starting point to Central Station and say which route detail must change.
