Why this lesson matters · เหตุผลที่เรียนบทนี้

For learners: Compare accounts, reconstruct a plausible event sequence and defend a qualified judgement.

For teachers: Reading, listening, evidence classification, challenge and changed information culminate in an unsupported mastery performance.

Your Goal

Compare two accounts of one event, classify evidence and uncertainty, reconstruct the most plausible sequence, revise it after new information and defend the final judgement independently.

คำอธิบายเป้าหมายภาษาไทย

Why this lesson matters

For the learner: Important events are often described from different viewpoints. A fair reconstruction must separate observation, memory, assumption and contradiction.

For the teacher: The mastery route integrates close reading, listening, evidence classification, timeline construction, challenge, revision and an unsupported final defence.

Require a source for every claim and uncertainty language for every inference. Do not force false certainty or treat a confident voice as stronger evidence.

0–3Defines fairness and certainty.Sets an evidence standard.A clear decision rule.

1. Frame a fair reconstruction

3 min

Event

During a community event, a display board fell just before a short power cut. Two people describe what they noticed.

STUDENT TASK
  1. Define direct observation, reported detail, inference and unknown.
  2. State which type can support a timeline most strongly.
  3. Complete: “A fair reconstruction should ___, but it should not ___.”
Teacher Help

Do not discuss blame. Establish evidence type and degree of certainty before reading the accounts.

2. Read the two accounts

5 min

I think the rope caused it.The stand may already have been unstable.inference
STUDENT TASK
  1. Underline four direct observations.
  2. Circle every time estimate.
  3. Label two inferences and two unknowns.
  4. Name the central contradiction without choosing a side.
Teacher Help

Accept both accounts as partial viewpoints. “I think” and “may” signal inference, not verified cause.

3. Compare evidence and build a provisional timeline

3Board falls / lights flicker.uncertain orderconflict
4Cause remains unconfirmed.lowinference only
STUDENT TASK
  1. Keep, change or qualify every row.
  2. Use likely, may, cannot confirm and contradicts.
  3. Give one alternative explanation.
  4. State what new evidence would matter most.
Teacher Help

Challenge causal language. The rope contact and the unstable stand are competing explanations, not established facts.

4. Listen and revise the timeline

Update 1 · American English · Stephen
Transcript · open after the task

The event technician checked the power log. It shows that the lights lost power at seven fifty-nine and forty-two seconds. A phone video begins three seconds later. In the first frame, the display board is already falling. The video does not show the rope or the base of the stand.

Update 2 · Australian English · Olivia
Transcript · open after the task

A volunteer inspected the display after the event. One support clip was loose, but she could not tell when it became loose. She also confirmed that the rope was beside the board, not attached to it. No camera recorded the moment before the power cut.

STUDENT TASK
  1. Record verified times and physical details.
  2. Separate what the phone video shows from what it cannot show.
  3. Revise the order of power loss and falling board.
  4. Reassess the rope and loose-clip explanations.
  5. State two remaining unknowns.
Teacher Help

Power loss precedes the first video frame, but the exact start of the fall remains uncertain. A loose clip is evidence of condition, not timing or cause.

5. Agree and defend the best current account

5 min

Analyst

Present the timeline, sources, confidence and remaining uncertainty.

Reviewer

Challenge one sequence claim, one cause claim and one missing source.

STUDENT TASK
  1. Give a 60-second reconstruction.
  2. Use at least four pieces of evidence.
  3. Respond to three reviewer challenges.
  4. Revise one sentence if the evidence requires it.
  5. Agree a careful two-sentence case summary.
Teacher Help

Require direct answers to challenges. A strong B2 conclusion can remain qualified when evidence is incomplete.

6. Final Practice · reconstruct after a new contradiction

7 min

New evidence card

A time-stamped message sent at 7:59:40 says, “The board is moving—please hold it.” The sender cannot remember whether the lights had already flickered.

INDEPENDENT MIXED-SKILL PERFORMANCE
  1. Classify the message, timestamp and memory limitation.
  2. Revise the timeline without removing valid earlier evidence.
  3. Explain which sequence claim becomes stronger and which remains uncertain.
  4. Evaluate the rope, loose clip and power-loss explanations.
  5. Defend the most plausible account with at least five sourced details.
  6. State two unknowns and one evidence request.
  7. Receive one feedback point and complete an improved 45-second retry.

Final Practice evidence

EVD · Evidence useClassifies sources, contradictions, inference and uncertainty accurately.
ADAPT · AdaptationRevises the timeline proportionately after the new message.
FP · Final performanceDefends a qualified reconstruction and improved retry independently.

Teacher scoring guide · 0–2

Score the first unsupported performance, then the focused retry separately.

0 · Not yetThe criterion is not demonstrated after one neutral prompt.
1 · With supportThe criterion is partly demonstrated or needs supplied language.
2 · IndependentThe criterion is clear without a model or supplied sentence.

Target: 5/6 overall with FP = 2 and no zero.

The lesson is complete whenYou reconstruct, qualify, defend and improve the case without a supplied conclusion.
Teacher Help · scoring and retry

Score the first unsupported performance. Give one evidence or certainty correction, then require a focused retry without supplying the conclusion.

EVD = การใช้หลักฐาน, ADAPT = การปรับข้อสรุปเมื่อมีข้อมูลใหม่, FP = การสรุปและปกป้องลำดับเหตุการณ์อย่างอิสระ ใช้คำว่า likely, may, cannot confirm เพื่อแสดงระดับความแน่นอน
