Progress focus LCFP
Control the target pattern so the intended meaning remains clear.
Complete the lesson’s real communication outcome without teacher-supplied sentences.
Your grammar path
Use past simple, was or were plus -ing, and had plus the past participle.
Link six events so the listener can recover sequence, interruption, and cause.
30-minute lesson route
Sort events by timeline job

Use six event cards. Separate the main sequence from actions already in progress and events completed before the later past reference point.
How to run Stage 1
3 min: Sort six events into main sequence, background, and earlier cause.
Match tense to job
Use past simple for the sequence, past continuous for the surrounding action, and past perfect for the earlier cause. Practise the required auxiliaries and participles.
How to run Stage 2
5 min: Review the three narrative forms and time relationships.
Use when, while, by the time, and because
Engduo Audio: Listen for meaning first. Audio never starts automatically.
Label the background actions, main events, and the change that had happened earlier.
Recover the scene, interruption, earlier cause, and solution in order.
Choose a connector that makes the relationship clear. Use when for interruption, while for simultaneous background, and by the time for an earlier completed event.
How to run Stage 3
5 min: Practise interruption, simultaneity, and earlier-cause connectors.
Build two three-layer timelines
Listen to both accounts. Record the background, main events, earlier causes, and final solutions, then retell each timeline from notes.
How to run Stage 4
6 min: Play both accounts and reconstruct the timelines.
Tell a six-event problem story
Tell a real or plausible story with at least three past-simple events, one past-continuous background action, and one past-perfect cause. Answer two timeline questions.
How to run Stage 5
7 min: Run the six-event problem story with two order questions.
Final practice: Make a past problem easy to follow
Task: Tell a connected six-event account using all three narrative tenses for their intended jobs, one clear interruption, one earlier cause, and two timeline answers.
Success: The listener can reconstruct the sequence, recognise the background action, and explain which earlier event caused the later problem.
LC · Language Control
0 Frequent form problems obscure the intended meaning.
1 Meaning remains clear with some prompting or self-correction.
2 Controls the three narrative forms and assigns each one to the correct timeline relationship.
FP · Functional Performance
0 Does not yet complete the communication outcome.
1 Completes most of the outcome with visible prompts.
2 Delivers a coherent six-event account and answers two order questions independently.
How to run Stage 6
4 min: Score LC and FP, repair one timeline or form choice, and retry the affected section.
