1. Connect each job to a workplace and duty
- Say the job.
- Choose the usual workplace.
- Add one action: A nurse works in a clinic and helps patients.
A / An receptionist works at a hotel.

Accept another realistic workplace. Ask the learner to show the difference between the job noun and the action verb.
2. Listen and identify the job, workplace and duties
Play each recording once. Decide before opening the transcript.
Worker 1 · Hotel front desk
Engduo Audio · Joanna · American EnglishTranscript and answer · open after listening
I work at the front desk in a busy hotel. I welcome guests, answer questions, and check bookings. I usually work indoors, and I start at eight o’clock.
Answer: receptionist · hotel · welcomes guests, answers questions, checks bookings
Worker 2 · Small café
Engduo Audio · Amy · British EnglishTranscript and answer · open after listening
I work in a small café. I prepare drinks, serve customers, and clean the counter. I often work with another team member. I like speaking with people, but I do not enjoy very early shifts.
Answer: café worker · café · prepares drinks, serves customers, cleans the counter
How to run Stage 2
Ask for job, workplace and two duties before checking. Replay only the phrase the learner missed and keep the transcript closed until a decision is made.
3. Build short job descriptions
- Choose four workers from Stage 1.
- Say where each person works.
- Add two different duties using the present simple.
Accuracy check: A receptionist welcomes guests. Receptionists welcome guests.
How to run Stage 3
Model one unrelated job and remove it. Correct subject–verb agreement only when it blocks a repeated useful pattern.
4. Choose the helpful worker and explain why
Say your choice first, then give one reason with a duty word.
A hotel guest cannot find a booking. Who can help?
A machine in a building is not working. Who can check it?
A customer wants a drink and a snack. Who can serve the person?
A patient needs information at a clinic. Who can help?
How to run Stage 4
Accept a different logical worker if the duty fits. Prompt for a reason instead of supplying the job word.
Final practice: Introduce one worker clearly
Your task: Choose a real or imaginary worker. Without reading a full model, say the job, workplace, three duties and one simple schedule or preference detail. Answer one follow-up question: “What does the person do?” or “Where does the person work?”
Success target: at least eight accurate target words and FP = 2 after one focused retry.
VR · Vocabulary Range
0 · Not yet Fewer than five target words are retrievable.
1 · With support Uses five to seven accurate words with prompts.
2 · Independent Uses at least eight accurate job, workplace and duty words without reading a full model.
FP · Functional Performance
0 · Not yet The listener cannot identify the job or duties.
1 · With support Gives the job, workplace and one or two duties with prompts.
2 · Independent Gives the job, workplace, three duties and answers the follow-up clearly.
How to run Stage 5
Score the complete first attempt. Give one specific success and one correction, then ask for a 20–30 second retry of the weaker part only.
