GIST · General Meaning
2: States the overall problem and place accurately after the first listen.
1: States one correctly or needs one prompt.
0: Does not identify the overall situation.
Listen for a community problem, the people affected, the proposed help and the next action.
Listen for the problem, who is affected, the help offered and what people should do next.
For the learner: Community notices often change a place, time or service. Listening for the affected group and next action helps you respond safely.
For the teacher: The learner must move from overall meaning to exact evidence, then give a practical response without reading a transcript.
For learners: Community notices can change access, place or time. The learner uses listening evidence to identify who is affected and what to do next.
For teachers: The A2 route separates General Meaning, Details and Action, then transfers the evidence into a short spoken update before an independent second notice.
Identify a simple community problem, the people affected, the proposed help and the next action.
ระบุปัญหาในชุมชน กลุ่มคนที่ได้รับผลกระทบ ความช่วยเหลือที่เสนอ และการกระทำต่อไปจากสิ่งที่ฟัง
Keep each transcript closed until the learner has given a supported answer. Play once for General Meaning, once for Details and Action, then allow one focused replay only when evidence is missing.
| Time | Teacher move | Expected learner evidence | Follow-up |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0–3 | Show four listening boxes without teaching answers. | Problem · affected group · help · action. | Ask which words may signal a change. |
| 3–7 | Model how one notice detail fits one box. | One reasonable prediction in each box. | Remove guesses that are not supported. |
| 7–12 | Play Audio 1 once without pausing. | Lift problem at community centre. | Require one complete GIST sentence. |
| 12–17 | Play Audio 1 again; allow one focused replay. | People, new room, time and call action. | Ask “What exact words support that?” |
| 17–23 | Close transcript and cue a short visitor response. | Clear problem, help and next action. | Change one detail and ask learner to update. |
| 23–30 | Use Audio 2 for independent Final Practice. | GIST, DET and ACT from a new notice. | Retry only the weakest criterion. |
You do not need every word. Listen for four connected pieces of information.
What is closed, unsafe, unavailable or changed?
Who cannot use the place or service normally?
What replacement place, time or service is offered?
What should the listener do now?
Accept familiar predictions such as closed, visitors, new room and call. Do not reveal the actual notice.
| Listen for | Useful signal words | Your prediction |
|---|---|---|
| Problem | not working · closed · unsafe | ________ |
| Affected group | visitors · families · older people | ________ |
| Proposed help | move · replace · offer | ________ |
| Next action | please · bring · call · arrive | ________ |
Model the method with an unrelated example: “The pool is closed. Families can use the sports hall. Please book online.” Then clear the example before Audio 1.
What is the main problem?
Where is the problem?
Play at 1×. Do not replay until the learner gives one complete General Meaning sentence.
Who is affected?
What help is offered?
What time is the class?
What should listeners do?
Good morning. The lift at the community centre is not working today. Older visitors and wheelchair users cannot reach the first-floor health class. The centre will move the class to the library meeting room at ten thirty. Please call the help desk before ten.
Keep 10:30 for the proposed help and before 10 for the listener action. This distinction checks careful detail listening.
“The lift is not working, so ___ cannot ___.”
“The class will move to ___ at ___.”
“Please ___ before ___.”
Accept “ask at the library desk” or “send a message” for the changed constraint, but the original problem, people, room and time must remain evidence-based.
General Meaning: Heavy rain has made the park path unsafe for Saturday’s family activity.
Details: Families with young children are affected; the activity moves to the community hall at 2:00.
Action: Bring the booking message and arrive 15 minutes early.
Transcript: Here is the update about Saturday’s family activity. Heavy rain has made the park path unsafe, so families with young children should not use it. Volunteers will run the activity inside the community hall at two o’clock. Bring your booking message and arrive fifteen minutes early.
2: States the overall problem and place accurately after the first listen.
1: States one correctly or needs one prompt.
0: Does not identify the overall situation.
2: Gives the affected group, new place and time accurately.
1: Gives one or two accurate details.
0: Gives no usable detail.
2: Gives both required actions and a reasonable update independently.
1: Gives one action or needs support for the update.
0: Gives no suitable action.
Target: 5/6 overall, ACT = 2 and no zero.
Record the first unsupported score and the focused retry separately.
Play once for General Meaning and once for Details and Action. Keep the evidence panel closed until scoring ends. For the changed constraint, accept “call the volunteers,” “ask whether late arrival is possible” or another practical contact action.
