Mixed Conditionals

UseConnect an unreal past condition to a present result or a persistent present state to an unreal past result.
Core formIf + past perfect, would + base verb now · If + past simple state, would have + past participle
Time logiccondition time and result time must match the intended meaning, not each other
RememberBuild the real timeline first; do not select a mixed pattern only because it sounds advanced.
ชื่อไวยากรณ์ภาษาไทย — เปิดเมื่อจำเป็น

Mixed Conditional ใช้เมื่อเงื่อนไขและผลอยู่คนละเวลา เช่น If I had accepted the job, I would live abroad now คือการตัดสินใจในอดีตส่งผลต่อปัจจุบัน

Your goal

By the end of this lesson, you can analyse three cross-time situations, choose the correct mixed-conditional direction, explain present consequences, and recommend one future adjustment.

MeaningDraw the real timeline

Identify the real past choice, present state, and actual consequence before imagining an alternative.

PatternChoose the direction of time

Use past condition to present result or present state to past result.

UseAnalyse and improve

Explain why the alternative matters now and recommend one practical future change.

1 · Build meaning

Separate reality from the imagined alternative

Mixed conditional time map contrasting unreal past to present result and present state to unreal past result
Use the visual to notice, practise, and communicate.

Use three decisions. Record what really happened in the past, what is true now, and which alternative the speaker wants to examine.

How to run Stage 1

3 min: Establish three real timelines and imagined alternatives.

2 · Move past to present

Use past perfect condition and present result

Build If + had + participle, would + base verb for an earlier choice that changes the imagined present.

How to run Stage 2

5 min: Build past-condition to present-result forms.

3 · Move present to past

Use a present unreal state and past result

Engduo Audio: Listen for meaning first. Audio never starts automatically.

Engduo Audio • American English

Identify both conditional directions, the real timeline, and the future adjustment.

Engduo Audio • British English

Map the earlier action, present result, current state, past result, and recommendation.

Build If + past simple state, would have + participle when a continuing quality or limitation affected a past event.

How to run Stage 3

5 min: Build present-state to past-result forms.

4 · Listen and map timelines

Recover both time directions

Listen to both reviews. Draw the real timeline, imagined condition, imagined result, and recommended future adjustment.

How to run Stage 4

6 min: Play both reviews and map both time directions.

5 · Communicate

Run a cross-time decision review

Analyse three real or plausible choices. Use both mixed patterns, explain two present consequences, and recommend one future adjustment without blaming the speaker.

How to run Stage 5

7 min: Run the cross-time decision review and future adjustment.

Final practice: Explain how a different time could have changed the result

Task: Give a two-minute review with three cross-time situations, both mixed-conditional directions, two present consequences, and one constructive future adjustment.

Success: Each condition and result is placed on the intended timeline and the recommendation follows from the analysis rather than unsupported regret.

LC · Language Control

0 Frequent form problems obscure the intended meaning.

1 Meaning remains clear with some prompting or self-correction.

2 Controls both mixed-conditional patterns and aligns verb forms with condition and result time.

FP · Functional Performance

0 Does not yet complete the communication outcome.

1 Completes most of the outcome with visible prompts.

2 Explains cross-time causes and proposes a constructive adjustment independently.

How to run Stage 6

4 min: Score LC and FP, repair one timeline-form mismatch, and retry the affected section.

คำอธิบายภาษาไทย — เปิดเมื่อจำเป็นเท่านั้น

วาดเส้นเวลาจริงก่อน ถ้าเหตุในอดีตเปลี่ยนผลตอนนี้ ใช้ If + had + participle, would + verb แต่ถ้าสภาพปัจจุบันที่ไม่จริงหรือไม่เป็นแบบนั้นส่งผลต่ออดีต ใช้ If + past simple, would have + participle
