Why this lesson matters ·

For learners: Learn to compare restaurant evidence, match a recommendation to a specific diner, respond to a concern and adapt when one condition changes before the B1 restaurant mastery task.

For teachers: TC-GS-01 moves from selective language choice to evidence comparison, supported recommendation, two-way exchange, listener adaptation and independent proof. Optional audio remains a collapsed reference and is not used as a listening score.

Your Goal

Compare two restaurants, recommend one for a specific diner with at least two relevant reasons, acknowledge one trade-off, respond to a concern, and adapt the recommendation when one condition changes.

Why this lesson matters ·

For learners: A useful recommendation is not only “I like this place.” It connects real evidence to the needs of a particular diner and changes when their needs change.

For teachers: The lesson moves from selective language choice to evidence-based comparison, two-way discussion and an independent adapted recommendation.

Teacher Lesson Plan · Read before class

This is a speaking lesson, not a reading lesson. Limit silent reading, hide models after selection, keep learner talk time above 70%, and correct after each complete speaking round.

TimeTeacher doesStudent doesRequired result

1 · Select
Choose only language that fits the diner.
2 · Connect
Link restaurant evidence to each reason.
3 · Speak
Hide the model and recommend naturally.

1. Choose the diner

3 min

Start with the person, not the restaurant. Choose one profile and identify the needs that should control the decision.

Maya

Vegetarian · quiet conversation · budget up to 300 baht · dinner at 7:00

Ken

Eats meat · quick meal near the station · budget up to 230 baht · dinner at 9:00

STUDENT TASK
  1. Choose Maya or Ken.
  2. State the two strongest needs.
  3. Say which detail is useful but less important.
You are ready whenYou can explain who the recommendation is for and what matters most.
Teacher Help

Assign a profile if the learner spends too long choosing. Ask “What must the restaurant provide?” and “What is only a preference?” Do not show the restaurant cards yet.

2. Explore useful recommendation language

5 min

Choose one or two frames from each group. Do not read every line aloud.

A · Compare the options

Show a useful difference.

Compared with …Compared with City Grill, Green Table is quieter.
… is more suitable for …Green Table is more suitable for a vegetarian diner.
Both …, but …Both fit the budget, but only one stays open late.

B · Recommend and justify

Connect the person to restaurant evidence.

I’d recommend … because …I’d recommend Green Table because the menu is clearly marked.
The best fit is …The best fit is City Grill because it is near the station.
The main reason is …The main reason is the late opening time.

C · Manage a concern

Acknowledge a limit or missing fact.

The trade-off is …The trade-off is that it costs a little more.
That’s a fair concern, but …That’s a fair concern, but it still fits the budget.
I can’t confirm …, so …I can’t confirm the allergy information, so I would call first.
STUDENT TASK
  1. Choose one comparison frame.
  2. Choose one recommendation frame.
  3. Choose one concern frame.
  4. Create one new restaurant sentence with each frame.
You are ready whenYou can use the three selected frames without reading the examples.
Teacher Help

Limit selection to ninety seconds. Check that “suitable for” names a person or need and that each reason can be supported by evidence. Hide unused frames.

3. Compare the restaurant evidence

4 min

Use only the facts below. Do not invent allergy safety, access or menu information.

RestaurantFood and dietary informationPriceAtmosphere and locationOpening limit
Green TableVegetable curries and salads; vegetarian and dairy-free dishes clearly markedAverage meal: 260 bahtQuiet; ten-minute walk from the stationCloses at 8:30
City GrillBurgers and grilled chicken; limited vegetarian choice; dairy-free status not confirmedAverage meal: 220 bahtLively; three-minute walk from the stationOpen until 11:00
STUDENT TASK
  1. Give two useful differences.
  2. Match one piece of evidence to each of your diner’s strongest needs.
  3. Name one trade-off.
You are ready whenEvery claim can be traced to a restaurant fact.
Optional model audio · open after your comparison
Audio 1 · British English · Amy · Amazon Polly Neural
Transcript

For Maya, I’d recommend Green Table rather than City Grill. It clearly marks vegetarian and dairy-free dishes, and the dining room is quieter. It costs a little more and it is farther away, but it still fits her budget. If she needs a late dinner, however, we should choose another place because Green Table closes at eight thirty.

Audio 2 · Indian English · Kajal · Amazon Polly Neural
Transcript

For Ken, City Grill is the better fit because it is near the station, stays open late, and has meals within his budget. The atmosphere may be noisy, so I would ask for a table away from the door. If he brings a vegetarian friend, I would not confirm the restaurant yet. I would call first and check the available dishes.

Teacher Help

Ask for evidence after each claim: “Which fact tells you that?” Keep the model audio closed until the learner has completed the comparison. The audio is a reference, not a listening score.

4. Build the first recommendation

5 min

Turn the evidence into one connected 45-second message.

STUDENT TASK
  1. Name the diner and your chosen restaurant.
  2. Give two reasons linked to the diner’s needs.
  3. Compare it with the other option.
  4. Acknowledge one trade-off.
  5. Finish with a clear recommendation or checking action.
Shape—not a script
For ___, I’d recommend ___. The main reason is ___. Compared with ___, it ___. The trade-off is ___. Overall, ___.
You are ready whenYour recommendation is connected, evidence-based and under 45 seconds.

Teacher Help

Allow thirty seconds to plan keywords only. Hide the shape after the first attempt. Correct one connector or comparison after the learner completes the full message.

5. Respond to the listener

4 min

A recommendation must survive one real question or concern.

STUDENT TASK
  1. Give the recommendation again without the model.
  2. Listen to one teacher concern.
  3. Acknowledge the concern.
  4. Defend, qualify or change the recommendation.
  5. Ask one checking question if information is missing.
Teacher concern options“Isn’t that too expensive?” · “What if dinner is later?” · “Can you confirm the dietary information?”
You are ready whenYou answer the concern without simply repeating the first reason.
Teacher Help

Choose one concern that genuinely tests the recommendation. Do not supply the repair language. If the evidence is missing, reward an honest checking action instead of an invented answer.

6. Adapt when the diner changes

6 min

Keep the decision skill, but change the person or one condition.

STUDENT TASK
  1. Round 1: switch from Maya to Ken, or from Ken to Maya.
  2. Give a new recommendation with two relevant reasons.
  3. Round 2: the diner brings a vegetarian friend or develops a strict nut allergy.
  4. State what you can confirm and what must be checked.
  5. Adapt the recommendation or delay the decision.
You are ready whenYour second version changes because the listener’s needs changed, not because you used different words.
Teacher Help

For a strict allergy, require uncertainty language and a checking action. Never allow the learner to infer safety from “vegetarian” or “dairy-free.” Give one feedback point after both rounds.

7. Final Practice · prove the recommendation

3 min

Hide the models. Complete a fresh 60–75 second recommendation independently.

FINAL PRACTICE
  1. Teacher assigns Maya or Ken and one changed condition.
  2. Compare both restaurants.
  3. Recommend one option with two relevant reasons.
  4. State one trade-off or missing fact.
  5. Respond to one teacher concern.
  6. After one feedback point, repeat the weaker 30-second section more clearly.
Communication (COM)Recommendation, reasons, trade-off and response are easy to follow.
Vocabulary range (VR)Comparison, suitability, concern and checking language fit the meaning.
Final performance (FP)The advice changes appropriately after the new condition.

Teacher scoring guide

Score the unsupported Final Practice, then score the retry separately.

0 · Not yetThe criterion is not demonstrated after one clear prompt.
1 · With supportThe criterion is partly demonstrated or needs supplied language.
2 · IndependentThe criterion is demonstrated clearly without a model or supplied line.

Target: 5/6 overall with no zero. Use the lowest focus as the retry target.

The lesson is complete whenYou make and adapt one evidence-based recommendation independently.
Teacher Help

Observe the complete first attempt without interruption. Record exact evidence for COM, VR and FP, give one success and one improvement, then change only the weakest condition for the retry.
