Listening: A Friend Needs Support
Understand what happened, what kind of support is wanted and what the friends will do next.
Why this lesson matters
For learners: Supportive listening means noticing the situation, the feeling, the request and the next action—not trying to solve everything immediately.
For teachers: This lesson moves TF05 from A1 relationship words into evidence-based listening and an appropriate everyday response.
คำอธิบายภาษาไทย
บทนี้ฝึกฟังว่าเกิดอะไรขึ้น ผู้พูดต้องการความช่วยเหลือแบบใด และทั้งสองคนจะทำอะไรต่อ โดยไม่รีบเดาหรือพยายามแก้ทุกอย่างแทนเพื่อน
Why this lesson matters · เหตุผลที่เรียนบทนี้
For learners: Understand a friend’s situation, feeling, and the kind of support they need.
For teachers: Move from key words to two natural-accent listening tasks, then give a short supportive response.
สำหรับผู้เรียน: เข้าใจสถานการณ์ ความรู้สึก และความช่วยเหลือที่เพื่อนต้องการ
สำหรับครู: พาจากคำสำคัญไปสู่การฟังสองสำเนียงธรรมชาติ แล้วตอบรับอย่างให้กำลังใจสั้น ๆ
Your Goal
By the end of this lesson, you can identify the situation and support request, record at least four accurate details, choose an empathetic response and report the agreed next action.

Listening Practice rule: preserve Predict → gist → details → evidence → transfer → final. Play each recording no more than twice before short replay. Ask for evidence before revealing an answer.
Teacher: Uses the cover and key nouns only.
Learner: Predicts one possible need.
Evidence: A useful listening purpose.
Teacher: Plays Matthew once without transcript.
Learner: Identifies problem and support request.
Evidence: One gist decision.
Teacher: Plays Matthew a second time.
Learner: Records people, event, reason, request and time.
Evidence: At least four accurate details.
Teacher: Replays only the needed phrase.
Learner: Explains what words prove each answer.
Evidence: Two clues.
Teacher: Removes complete answers.
Learner: Builds an empathetic response and next-action question.
Evidence: Response fits the request.
Teacher: Plays Olivia, scores and gives one correction.
Learner: Reports response, details and action, then retries.
Evidence: GIST/DET/ACT 0–2.
Feedback rule: Do not interrupt the first listen. Confirm one successful detail, correct one high-value misunderstanding, replay only the relevant phrase and retry the weakest criterion.
Predict the kind of support
Your task: Look at the cover and clues. Choose two things you may hear and say what you will listen for.
Listening purpose: “I will listen for what happened, what support the person wants and the next action.”
Teacher Help · Stage 1
Do not confirm the story. Ask the learner to name evidence categories: situation, request, time or action.
First listen: choose the main need
Your task: Listen once without reading. Choose the best gist.
Sam’s message
A. Nora to solve every problem now.
B. A quiet chat and company tomorrow.
C. Nora to cancel work.
A. Tired but ready to talk.
B. Angry about the café.
C. Excited about a trip.
Check after both choices
1 B. Sam says a quiet chat would help. 2 A. The week has been difficult, but Sam asks to meet.
Teacher Help · Stage 2
Play once at 1× without pausing. Ask for both choices and one remembered clue before opening the answer.
Second listen: collect the details
Your task: Listen again and complete the short notes.
| Person | What happened | Reason / feeling | Support wanted | Next action |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sam | ________ | ________ | ________ | ________ |
Check only after the second full listen
Missed yesterday’s walk · difficult week and too tired to talk · does not need everything solved · quiet chat · tea after work tomorrow.
Teacher Help · Stage 3
Play the complete message a second time. Pause only once for note-taking if needed. Require at least four accurate cells before opening the answer.
Prove the need with evidence
Your task: Explain which words show the problem, boundary and requested support.
Problem
“The problem is ______ because I heard ______.”
Boundary
“Sam does not want ______ because Sam says ______.”
Support
“A helpful response would ______ because ______.”
Evidence check
“missed our walk” · “week has been difficult” · “don’t need you to solve everything” · “meet for tea after work tomorrow” · “a quiet chat would really help.”
Teacher Help · Stage 4
Ask “What exact words helped you?” before replaying. Paraphrased evidence is acceptable if it is accurate.
Build an empathetic response
Your task: Choose one line from each card and adapt it to Sam’s message.
Thanks for telling me.
That sounds like a difficult week.
You don’t have to explain everything now.
I can listen first.
Shall we meet at ______?
Would one small task help after we talk?
Teacher Help · Stage 5
Model one unrelated response, then remove it. Reject advice that ignores the explicit request to listen rather than solve everything.
Listen to Nora’s response and report the plan
Your task: First play: identify Nora’s main response. Second play: record time, place, kind of support, possible small task and follow-up message.
Nora’s response
- What kind of support does Nora offer?
- Where and when will they meet?
- What will they decide after the chat?
- What will Nora do before leaving work?
- Why does this response match Sam’s request?
Success target: 5/6 with no zero and ACT = 2 after the focused retry.
GIST · Support need
0 · Not yet Cannot identify Nora’s main response.
1 · With support Identifies listening or meeting after a prompt.
2 · Independent Clearly reports that Nora will meet, listen and avoid demanding a full explanation.
DET · Details
0 · Not yet Gives fewer than two accurate details.
1 · With support Gives two or three accurate details after replay.
2 · Independent Gives at least four accurate details: café, six, tomorrow, listen, small task decision or message before leaving.
ACT · Empathetic action
0 · Not yet Gives an action that ignores Sam’s request.
1 · With support Explains one helpful action after a prompt.
2 · Independent Explains how Nora acknowledges, listens and agrees a realistic next step.
Open after scoring the first attempt
Nora will meet Sam at the café at six tomorrow, listen first, decide whether one small task would help, and message before leaving work.
Teacher Help · Final Practice
First play: gist only. Second play: details and action. Score before opening the answer. Give one correction, replay only the relevant phrase and retry the weakest GIST, DET or ACT part.
