Why this lesson matters

For learners: Relationship conflict often comes from different expectations rather than bad intentions. Strong communicators separate facts from assumptions, make needs visible and agree a boundary that both people can follow.

For teachers: This mastery lesson combines TF05 relationship vocabulary, support listening, open discussion and practical advice in one mediation task.

Why this lesson matters · เหตุผลที่เรียนบทนี้

For learners: Analyse a relationship conflict and negotiate clear boundaries and a workable agreement.

For teachers: Integrate listening evidence, perspective-taking, precise language, negotiation, scoring, and an improved retry.

Your Goal

Mixed-Skill rule: require a traceable source for every claim, expose one assumption before choosing a response and do not accept an agreement without a clear boundary, action, check-in and fallback. Add the changed condition only after the first complete agreement.

1. Frame the shared problem

3 min

Weekend group plan

Four friends are organising a weekend activity. The organiser needs replies early enough to book fairly. Another friend feels pressured by frequent messages and sometimes cannot check a calendar until later. The group wants a clear process without damaging the friendship.

STUDENT TASK
  1. State the shared decision in one sentence.
  2. Name the common goal and two different needs.
  3. Define one standard that a fair agreement must meet.
Teacher Help · Stage 1

Keep the shared goal separate from either person’s preferred solution. Ask what must remain true for both people.

2. Separate facts, assumptions and needs

4 min

Fact

The message was sent on Monday.
No reply arrived by Wednesday.
A booking deadline exists.

Assumption

Silence means the plan is not important.
A reminder always creates pressure.

Need

The organiser needs enough notice.
The friend needs space and one clear request.

STUDENT TASK
  1. Turn one fact into a neutral sentence.
  2. Expose one assumption from each viewpoint.
  3. Restate both needs without blame.
Teacher Help · Stage 2

Correct logical strength before grammar detail. Do not allow “always,” “never” or mind-reading unless supported.

3. Compare two reasonable viewpoints

5 min
ViewpointConfirmed concernReasonable needRisk if ignored
A · OrganiserLate replies can make a group booking unfair or impossible. One reply deadline and reliable notice.Others pay more or the plan fails.
B · FriendRepeated messages can feel demanding when work is busy. One clear deadline and less public pressure.Avoidance or resentment grows.
STUDENT TASK
  1. Give the strongest fair reason for each viewpoint.
  2. Name common ground.
  3. Identify one phrase that would make the conflict worse.
  4. State what new evidence could change the agreement.
You are ready whenYou can defend both needs without deciding who is the “bad” person.
Teacher Help · Stage 3

Challenge one-sided comparison. Require the learner to represent each viewpoint in language that person could accept.

4. Listen to the organiser and respond neutrally

When I invite people to a group plan, I need a reply by the next evening. If someone reads the message but says nothing for several days, I assume the plan is not important to them. I’m not asking for an immediate answer; I’m asking for enough notice to organise fairly.

STUDENT TASK
  1. First listen: identify the request and main reason.
  2. Second listen: record the deadline, behaviour, assumption and fairness concern.
  3. Restate the viewpoint without the assumption.
  4. Ask one clarification question that could improve the agreement.
Teacher Help · Stage 4

Play once for gist and once for evidence. Open the transcript only after the neutral restatement.

5. Build and stress-test one agreement

6 min
STUDENT TASK
  1. Write one neutral common-ground sentence.
  2. Set one reply deadline that is easy to recognise.
  3. Choose one reminder rule and whether it is private or public.
  4. Confirm what silence means after the deadline.
  5. Set one check-in: when will the group review whether this works?
  6. Set one fallback if someone genuinely cannot reply.
Mediation route—not a scriptWe both need ___. The confirmed facts are ___. We may be assuming ___. Let’s agree that ___. We will check it after ___. If ___, our fallback will be ___.
You are ready whenBoth people can explain the same boundary, action, check-in and fallback.
Teacher Help · Stage 5

Press one weak assumption: urgency, availability or meaning of silence. Do not give the fallback. Require a specific check-in.

6. Final Practice · adapt after new information

7 min

Transcript · open after the task

I understand the need for a deadline, but constant group messages can feel like pressure. Sometimes I read a message between meetings and cannot check my calendar until later. Silence does not mean I do not care. I would prefer one clear deadline and a private reminder only if my answer is essential.

INDEPENDENT MIXED-SKILL PERFORMANCE
  1. Identify the request, constraint and challenged assumption.
  2. Revise, qualify or defend the first agreement.
  3. Explain how the new agreement protects both needs.
  4. Give a 90-second mediated agreement with boundary, action, check-in and fallback.
  5. Answer: “Why is this fairer than simply sending more reminders?”
  6. Teacher gives one feedback point; retry only the weakest 30–45 seconds.

Final Practice evidence

EVD · Evidence useSeparates confirmed behaviour, assumptions, needs and consequences accurately.
ADAPT · AdaptationRevises the boundary and reminder process directly in response to the constraint.
FP · Final performanceMediates and defends a feasible agreement with check-in and fallback.

Teacher scoring guide

Score the first unsupported performance, then the focused retry separately.

0 · Not yetThe criterion is not demonstrated after one clear prompt.
1 · With supportThe criterion is partly demonstrated or needs supplied language.
2 · IndependentThe criterion is clear without a model or supplied sentence. Natural hesitation is acceptable.

Target: 5/6 overall with FP = 2 and no zero.

The lesson is complete whenYou can revise the agreement without dismissing either viewpoint and explain why it remains fair.
Teacher Help · scoring and retry

Do not supply the revised agreement. Score EVD/ADAPT/FP before feedback, give one success and one revision target, then allow a focused retry with no full script.
