What this roleplay trains

  • You practise both storyteller and advice-partner roles.
  • You separate facts, feelings and assumptions before advising.
  • You offer one realistic next step rather than controlling the person.
  • You adapt when a public message would make the situation worse.

1Know the two roles and six turns

STORYTELLER

Give the key events, how they affected you and what you want help deciding.

ADVICE PARTNER

Summarise, ask one focused question, offer one option and check whether it fits.

  1. Storyteller explains what happened and the effect.
  2. Partner summarises the concern.
  3. Partner asks one focused follow-up.
  4. Storyteller adds the missing fact or boundary.
  5. Partner advises with reason and respectful language.
  6. Both confirm one realistic next action.
STUDENT TASK
  1. Name what belongs in Turns 1, 3 and 5.
  2. Explain why advice should come after a summary and question.
  3. Perform the six turn labels once without full sentences.
How to run Stage 1

Keep setup under four minutes. Point to the next turn rather than supplying a sentence. Do not let the advice partner interrupt the first story.

2Build respectful story and advice moves

Choose only the language that helps this situation.

TELL THE STORY

We had agreed to ___, but ___.

When it happened again, I felt ___.

SUMMARISE

It sounds as if ___ affected you because ___.

So you want to ___ without ___.

ASK

Have you had a chance to ask what happened?

What outcome would feel fair to you?

ADVISE + CHECK

You could ___ because ___.

Would that feel private and calm enough?

STUDENT TASK
  1. Build one fact-and-effect sentence.
  2. Summarise without adding blame.
  3. Ask one question that may change the advice.
  4. Offer one option and check whether it fits.
How to run Stage 2

Elicit before modelling. Correct blame, vague advice and missing reason first. Avoid turning the stage into a lecture about should.

3Listen for empathy, question and advice

Keep transcripts closed on the first play. Decide what happened and how the response protects the friendship.

Kajal · Indian English · Amazon Polly Neural

Transcript · open after listening

I’m not sure what to do about Alex. We made plans twice, and Alex cancelled both times without explaining. I felt disappointed, but I don’t want to start an argument in our group chat. How can I ask what happened without sounding angry?

Emma · British English · Amazon Polly Neural

Transcript · open after listening

It sounds as if the cancellations hurt, but you still want to protect the friendship. Why not send Alex a private message? You could say, “I missed seeing you, and I was worried when our plans changed twice. Is everything okay?” That explains the effect without blaming anyone.

STUDENT TASK
  1. Identify the two confirmed events and the effect.
  2. Find the summary and the practical option.
  3. Explain why a private message fits better than the group chat.
  4. Close the transcript and retell the response route.
How to run Stage 3

Play once for gist and once for the functional moves. Open transcripts only after answers. Do not require imitation of exact wording.

4Round 1 · Student is the Storyteller

YOUR INFORMATION

Alex cancelled two shared plans.

No explanation was given.

You felt disappointed and confused.

You want to ask what happened without a public argument.

PARTNER’S JOB

Summarise the concern.

Ask one focused follow-up.

Offer one private, practical next step.

Check that the advice feels acceptable.

STUDENT TASK
  1. Tell the facts and effect clearly.
  2. Answer the follow-up precisely.
  3. Respond to the advice rather than simply agreeing.
  4. Confirm what you will do next.
How to run Stage 4

Ask one question at a time. Do not correct while turns are moving. Give one focused correction after the exchange.

5Round 2 · Switch roles

TEACHER’S STORY

A sibling borrowed a favourite item without asking.

The item was returned safely.

This has happened before.

The storyteller wants a boundary without a family argument.

YOUR JOB · ADVICE PARTNER

Summarise both the event and repeated pattern.

Ask what boundary the person wants.

Offer one calm conversation route.

Check whether the advice feels realistic.

NEW INFORMATION · REVEAL AFTER THE FIRST ADVICE
The sibling is embarrassed and will shut down if the issue is discussed in front of other family members.

STUDENT TASK
  1. Ask one question before advising.
  2. Give one reasoned option.
  3. Adapt it for privacy after the new information.
  4. Confirm who will say what and when.
How to run Stage 5

Reveal only the fact the learner asks for. Reject advice that humiliates, threatens or speaks for the storyteller.

6Final Practice · Respond to a fresh friendship concern

STORY

A close friend has stopped replying to weekend invitations.

The friend still speaks normally at work.

The storyteller is worried but does not know the reason.

They want clarity without pressure.

SUCCESSFUL OUTCOME

Facts and assumptions stay separate.

The listener summarises and asks one focused question.

Advice includes a private low-pressure message.

Both confirm a realistic next action.

TEACHER REVEALS AFTER THE FIRST ADVICE
The friend recently started caring for a relative and may have less free time, but has not shared details publicly.

FINAL ROLEPLAY
  1. Complete all six turns without the model.
  2. Use facts before assumptions.
  3. Adapt after the private constraint appears.
  4. Confirm a respectful next action.
  5. After one feedback point, retry only the weaker move.
Teacher scoring guide · Progress Focus

Score the independent first attempt, then the focused retry separately.

CM · Conversation management · 0–2

2 · Independent: Summarises, asks a focused question, responds to the answer and maintains respectful turn-taking.

1 · With support: Completes the route after one interaction prompt.

0 · Not yet: The teacher manages most turns or advice appears before listening.

FP · Functional performance · 0–2

2 · Independent: Explains facts and effect, gives practical respectful advice, adapts for privacy and confirms the next action.

1 · With support: Reaches a workable response after one content or language prompt.

0 · Not yet: Advice is blaming, controlling, public or does not lead to a realistic next step.

Target: at least 3/4 with no zero. Retry the weaker criterion with fewer prompts and no model.

How to run Stage 6

Give 30 seconds to read. Reveal the caring responsibility only after the first advice. Do not interrupt the first attempt. Score, give one success and one correction, then retry 30–45 seconds.
