Determiners and Reference Across a Text

Introduce, identify, compare and track several options so every reference remains clear.

LevelB2
Time30 minutes
Lesson typeGrammar in Context
Final evidenceNine reference choices, four repairs, one one-minute comparison and one focused retry
Why this lesson matters · เหตุผลที่เรียนบทนี้

For learners: Track several options across connected speech and writing so every determiner points to one identifiable noun.

For teachers: A 30-minute B2 route from reference status and nine determiner moves through four ambiguity repairs, two-accent listening, a one-minute comparison and one focused retry.

Your Goal

By the end of this lesson, you can use nine determiner choices, repair four unclear references, and deliver a one-minute comparison in which every option is easy to identify.

คำอธิบายภาษาไทย

เลือก determiner 9 แบบให้เหมาะกับสถานะของคำนาม แก้คำอ้างอิงที่ไม่ชัด 4 จุด และเปรียบเทียบตัวเลือกต่อเนื่อง 1 นาทีโดยผู้ฟังรู้เสมอว่ากำลังกล่าวถึงตัวเลือกใด

Why this lesson matters

A grammatically correct determiner can still fail if the listener cannot identify its noun. Clear connected language introduces an option, marks whether it is known or contrasted, and repeats the noun whenever a short reference could point to more than one thing.

ภาษาไทย: แม้ determiner จะถูกไวยากรณ์ แต่การสื่อสารยังผิดพลาดได้หากผู้ฟังไม่รู้ว่าคำนั้นชี้กลับไปที่อะไร บทนี้จึงฝึกทั้งการแนะนำตัวเลือก ติดตามตัวเลือกเดิม และพูดคำนามซ้ำเมื่อคำอ้างอิงสั้น ๆ อาจหมายถึงหลายสิ่ง

Teacher Lesson Plan

Reference comes first. Before correcting a determiner, ask which exact noun the listener should identify and what has already been introduced.

Stage 1 · Set the reference status before choosing a word

Decide what the listener already knows and which exact noun must stay identifiable.

4 minutes
STUDENT TASK
INTRODUCEName a new person, place, object or option.
TRACKShow that it is known, near, contrasted or part of a set.
CHECKCan the listener point to exactly one noun?
  1. Imagine three proposal folders: a workshop plan, a webinar plan and a coaching plan.
  2. Introduce all three with full nouns.
  3. Label six reference jobs: new, known, near, distant/contrasted, additional and remaining.
  4. For each job, say which exact folder the listener should identify.
  5. If two nouns are possible, repeat the noun instead of using a short substitute.
Meaning first: “This proposal” is clear only when speaker and listener can identify the same proposal.
Finish evidenceSix reference-status decisions with one identifiable noun each.
Teacher Help · Stage 1

Use real objects or short text labels, not an activity image. Hide the determiner list until learners name the intended noun and decide whether it is new, known, near, contrasted, additional or remaining.

Stage 2 · Choose nine determiner moves

Match reference job, noun number and form before speaking across several sentences.

8 · choose/reject from twoeither / neitherNeither plan covers travel.
9 · add, group or identify remaininganother / other / the otherLet’s check the other proposal.
  1. Say one clear sentence for each of the nine moves.
  2. Underline the noun after every determiner.
  3. Check singular/plural agreement.
  4. Explain what the listener knows at that point.
Check the reference rule

Introduce with a full noun, then use a determiner only when the listener can recover that noun. Use the other only when a defined set leaves one identifiable option.

Finish evidenceNine accurate determiner choices with identifiable nouns.
Teacher Help · Stage 2

Score reference and agreement together. If a form is correct but points to more than one noun, require the learner to repeat or rename the noun before moving on.

Stage 3 · Repair four unclear references

Find the competing noun, then make the smallest repair that gives one clear interpretation.

  1. Circle the exact word that creates uncertainty in each line.
  2. Name every noun it could refer to.
  3. Repair all four while preserving the intended comparison.
  4. Explain why repeating a noun is stronger than forcing a shorter sentence.
  5. Create one new unclear reference for a partner to repair.
Check the four repair decisions

1 name the workshop or webinar · 2 name the basic or premium package · 3 use singular proposal after each · 4 define the remaining member or use another.

Finish evidenceFour justified repairs and one partner repair item.
Teacher Help · Stage 3

Ask “Which exact noun?” before offering a correction. Prefer the smallest defensible repair: repeat the noun, correct agreement or define the set. Do not reward elegant shortening if ambiguity remains.

Stage 4 · Build one three-option reference chain

Plan how every option moves from first mention to comparison and final recommendation.

  1. Choose three real courses, services, rooms, products or plans.
  2. Write short notes only: full noun · status · determiner · reason.
  3. Introduce each option once with a full noun.
  4. Track each option through one contrast and one set relationship.
  5. Mark every place where a pronoun or short phrase could become ambiguous.
  6. Prepare one repair by repeating the exact noun.
Check the chain before speaking

Every short reference must point backward to one recoverable noun. If two options remain possible, repeat the noun before adding new information.

Finish evidenceOne three-option reference-chain map and one prepared ambiguity repair.
Teacher Help · Stage 4

Reject notes that use only this/that/one without a full noun anchor. The chain is ready when another learner can draw a single arrow from every reference back to its intended option.

Stage 5 · Listen, identify and compare across two accents

Recover the noun behind each determiner, then use that evidence in a first comparison.

STUDENT TASK
British English · Brian

Workspace comparison

Track exactly which room, cabinet and option each expression identifies.

American English · Joanna

Proposal summary

Notice when the speaker repeats a noun to prevent an unclear reference.

Listening passRecordDecision
1 · Situationthree options and the overall needwhat is being compared?
2 · Referencedeterminer → exact nounis every arrow clear?
3 · Recommendationchosen option + reasonwhich noun must be repeated?
  1. Listen to Brian once for the situation and again to map every reference.
  2. Repeat with Joanna; do not imitate the accent.
  3. Retell one reference chain from each recording.
  4. Give your first three-option comparison from the Stage 4 map.
  5. Your partner asks “Which option do you mean?” once; repair the line by naming the noun.
Finish evidenceTwo listening maps, one first comparison and one live reference repair.
Teacher Help · Stage 5

Audio never starts automatically. Accent variety tests listening transfer, not imitation. Replay only the sentence where the learner loses the noun target; then require an arrow from the determiner to one exact noun.

Stage 6 · Final Practice: compare, recommend and retry

Deliver one connected comparison in which every option stays identifiable.

7 minutes
STUDENT TASK
FINAL PRACTICE

Introduce → track → compare → clarify → recommend → retry

  1. Name the real need and introduce exactly three options with full nouns.
  2. Use notes only: option · reference status · determiner · evidence.
  3. Compare the options for 60 seconds using all nine reference moves from Stage 2.
  4. Use each/every, one two-option form, and one another/other/the other distinction.
  5. Your partner interrupts once with “Which option do you mean?”
  6. Repair the reference by repeating the exact noun, then finish with one recommendation.
  7. After one feedback target, retry only the weakest reference chain or repair.
Performance rule: A shorter reference is useful only when it still points to one exact option.

Score the first independent performance

MEAN · MeaningThe listener can identify whether every noun is new, known, contrasted, additional or remaining.
FORM · FormNine determiner choices agree with noun number and use the correct set or alternative pattern.
USE · Real useThe learner compares three options for one minute, repairs ambiguity and recommends one option independently.
0 · Not yetTwo or more references can point to different nouns, or agreement blocks the intended comparison.
1 · With supportThe comparison becomes identifiable after one prompt to name the noun, define the set or repair agreement.
2 · IndependentAll three options remain clear through the comparison, repair and recommendation without a prompt.

Result: 0–2 Rebuild · 3–4 Developing · 5–6 B2 mastery evidence.

Finish evidenceOne one-minute comparison + nine determiner moves + four repair principles + one recommendation + one focused retry.
Teacher Help · Stage 6

Score the first independent attempt across MEAN, FORM and USE. Give one target only: noun anchor, reference status, singular/plural agreement, set definition or ambiguity repair. Keep the original score and record the focused retry separately.
