Why this lesson matters · เหตุผลที่เรียนบทนี้

For learners: Control advanced ellipsis across a complex decision exchange while preserving source, scope, stance and commitment.

For teachers: A 30-minute C2 route from full reconstruction and seven compression options through cohesion tracing, repair, accent-varied listening and one auditable decision exchange.

Your Goal

By the end of this lesson, you can reconstruct ten elliptical patterns, compare seven compression options, repair five unclear omissions, and conduct a concise decision exchange with secure cohesion.

คำอธิบายภาษาไทย

เมื่อจบบทเรียน คุณจะขยายรูปละคำขั้นสูงกลับเป็นรูปเต็มได้ 10 แบบ เปรียบเทียบวิธีทำให้ข้อความกระชับ 7 แบบ แก้การละที่ไม่ชัดเจน 5 จุด และสนทนาเพื่อตัดสินใจอย่างกระชับโดยยังเชื่อมโยงความหมายได้มั่นคง

Why this lesson matters

At C2, ellipsis often stretches across several turns, speakers and propositions. The risk is not simply missing grammar: a shortened reply can hide whether it accepts the same option, condition, scope or degree of commitment. Advanced cohesion keeps the entire decision trail recoverable.

Teacher Lesson Plan

Reconstruct each shortcut as a decision record: who commits to what, under which condition, with what polarity and scope? Accept compression only when another listener reconstructs the same record.

Stage 1 · Reconstruct ten elliptical patterns

Restore the full proposition, not just the nearest repeated verb.

  1. Reconstruct ten shortened lines in full.
  2. Name the source turn and speaker.
  3. Restore polarity, modality, condition and scope.
  4. Reject a reconstruction that changes commitment.
  5. Explain which visible cue licenses the ellipsis.
Finish evidenceTen full reconstructions with source and commitment intact.
Teacher Help · Stage 1

Nearest-word recovery can be wrong when a dialogue contains several propositions. Ask learners to state the entire proposition and then identify the turn that supplies it.

Stage 2 · Compare seven compression options

Choose the shortest form that preserves the intended contrast and stance.

4 minutes
STUDENT TASK
OptionBest useDecision risk
auxiliary ellipsiscontrast subject, tense, modality or polaritywrong source verb
coordinate ellipsisshare material across parallel clausesscope attaches to only one clause
comparative ellipsisavoid repeating the comparison framestandard of comparison is hidden

deliberate repetitionrestore accountability after distanceheavier but sometimes necessary
  1. Choose among seven options in fourteen contexts.
  2. State the full unreduced message.
  3. Name the focus or stance the short form preserves.
  4. Reject one shorter option because it hides scope or responsibility.
  5. Use deliberate repetition once to re-anchor the decision.
Finish evidenceSeven compression contrasts with decision-focused reasons.
Teacher Help · Stage 2

The “most advanced” answer is not always the shortest. At C2, controlled repetition is a strategic cohesion resource when distance, competing proposals or accountability make ellipsis unsafe.

Stage 3 · Trace cohesion across a decision exchange

Map how options, conditions and commitments move through several turns.

2 · ConditionIf the cap remains—and it must. The cap must remain for approval.
3 · ContrastOperations prefers July; sales, August.Sales prefers August.
4 · CommitmentJuly, then. We’ll support it.Both sides choose the July extension.
  1. Map the proposal, condition, contrast and final commitment.
  2. Link each elliptical form to its source turn.
  3. Write actor, action, condition, modality and polarity.
  4. Identify one place where controlled repetition improves the record.
  5. Summarise the final decision in one explicit sentence.
Finish evidenceOne complete decision trail with no missing responsibility.
Teacher Help · Stage 3

Do not let learners map only vocabulary. Cohesion must preserve speech act and commitment: a suggestion, possibility, requirement and final agreement are not interchangeable.

Stage 4 · Repair five unclear omissions

Restore the minimum language needed to make the decision auditable.

  1. State at least two plausible readings.
  2. Identify missing source, scope, stance or fallback.
  3. Restore the smallest decisive element.
  4. Ask a partner to repeat the operational decision.
  5. Keep revising until both records match.
Finish evidenceFive repairs with one shared decision record each.
Teacher Help · Stage 4

A repair is complete only when both listeners can state the same actor, action, condition and commitment. Grammatical acceptability alone is not enough.

Stage 5 · Listen across two accents and audit cohesion

Follow ellipsis across speakers without losing which proposal or condition is active.

STUDENT TASK
American English

Option and commitment

Track proposal, stance, condition and the point where a speaker commits.

Australian English

Scope and fallback

Recover the scope of each shortened reply and the fallback action if the preferred option fails.

  1. Listen once and state the final decision.
  2. Listen again and map every shortened turn to its source.
  3. Record actor, action, condition, polarity and commitment.
  4. Identify one compression choice that is elegant and one that needs expansion.
  5. Replay only the turn where the decision trail breaks.
Finish evidenceTwo auditable decision maps and one targeted expansion.
Teacher Help · Stage 5

The accents test meaning transfer, not imitation. Ask learners to reconstruct the operational decision, not transcribe every word.

Stage 6 · Final Practice: concise decision exchange

Compress repeated material across several turns while keeping agreement and responsibility explicit.

7 minutes
STUDENT TASK
FINAL PRACTICE

Options → conditions → compressed exchange → audit → decision → retry

  1. Choose a complex decision with three options, two conditions and one fallback.
  2. Write a full decision record: actors · actions · stance · conditions · scope · fallback.
  3. Conduct a 2-minute exchange using at least four compression options.
  4. Use controlled repetition once to re-anchor responsibility.
  5. Your partner challenges: “Which proposal do you mean?” and “What exactly are you agreeing to?”
  6. Expand only the unclear element.
  7. Close with one explicit decision sentence and named owners.
  8. After one feedback target, retry the weakest three turns.
Performance rule: Advanced compression succeeds only when both speakers can reconstruct the same proposal, condition, scope and commitment.

Score the first independent performance

MEAN · MeaningEvery shortened turn preserves proposal, condition, polarity, scope and commitment.
FORM · FormEllipsis, substitution, reference and retained auxiliaries license one secure reconstruction.
USE · Real useThe exchange is concise, reaches a decision and leaves an auditable record of owners and fallback.
0 · Not yetAn omission creates competing decisions or hides responsibility.
1 · With supportThe decision becomes secure after one prompt or explicit repair.
2 · IndependentThe learner compresses flexibly, answers both challenges and repairs the weakest turns without a prompt.

Result: 0–2 Rebuild · 3–4 Developing · 5–6 C2 mastery evidence.

Finish evidenceOne concise decision exchange + one cohesion-focused retry.
Teacher Help · Stage 6

Score the first independent attempt across MEAN, FORM and USE. Give one target only: source proposition, scope, stance, retained auxiliary, re-anchoring or decision clarity. Keep the original score and record the retry separately.
