Understand the workplace outcome

Two colleagues use different levels of directness. Prevent politeness from hiding the decision and prevent clarity from sounding dismissive.

Ask the learner to state the listener, purpose and successful outcome in plain English. Move on only when the task is clear.

Study the model exchange

A: I am not sure the timing is ideal.
B: Are you concerned about the launch date or the amount of testing?
A: Mainly the testing. I would be more comfortable with another week.
B: Understood. I still prefer the current date, but let us compare the risk of each option.
Learner does: identify the job of each part of the model before borrowing any language.

Use the model once for meaning. Ask what each part achieves; do not turn the model into a long read-aloud exercise.

Build the phrase path

Guided role play

Learner does: Clarify an indirect concern.

Use keywords only. Change names, figures, reasons and actions so the message is yours.

Give prompts or keywords, not a full script. Require the learner to make the content true for the situation.

Change one condition and respond

  1. Soften a direct disagreement without hiding it.
  2. Agree on what evidence would resolve the difference.

Retry rule: after feedback, repeat the weakest part with one changed condition.

Take the other role or act as the reader. Change one realistic fact after the first attempt and delay correction until the message is complete.

Final role play · prove the skill

Complete a six-turn disagreement in which both positions and the next step are explicit.

Success: complete the task independently and make the listener’s next action or understanding clear.

Do not supply wording during the final task. Score the three Progress Focus areas, give one precise improvement point and run a shorter retry.
