Choose the intended meaning

The same request can sound clear, collaborative or unnecessarily abrupt depending on the grammar and framing.

Ask the learner to state the listener, purpose and successful outcome in plain English. Move on only when the task is clear.

Compare the forms in context

Direct: Send the revised figures by noon.
Neutral: Please send the revised figures by noon.
Diplomatic: Could you send the revised figures by noon so we can complete the client update?
Firm boundary: We will need the revised figures by noon to keep today’s client deadline.
Learner does: identify the job of each part of the model before borrowing any language.

Use the model once for meaning. Ask what each part achieves; do not turn the model into a long read-aloud exercise.

Build the useful pattern

Create true sentences

Learner does: Choose a tone for a close colleague.

Use keywords only. Change names, figures, reasons and actions so the message is yours.

Use the pattern at work

  1. Rewrite for a client or senior manager.
  2. Make an urgent request firm without sounding personal.

Retry rule: after feedback, repeat the weakest part with one changed condition.

Take the other role or act as the reader. Change one realistic fact after the first attempt and delay correction until the message is complete.

Final grammar task · transfer the meaning

Adapt one request for three relationships and explain why each version fits.

Success: complete the task independently and make the listener’s next action or understanding clear.
