B2 · Compare evidence, qualify claims and revise a recommendation
For learners: Evaluate competing innovation claims with evidence, limits and alternatives, then revise a recommendation when new evidence changes the balance.
For teachers: The six-stage mastery cycle integrates reading, comparison, listening and independent recommendation; new evidence and changed constraints force an explicit adaptation.
Compare claims and evidence, evaluate one benefit and one limitation, identify an unanswered question, and revise a recommendation after new evidence.

For the learner: Real decisions require more than repeating a promising claim. You must weigh evidence, limits, alternatives and uncertainty.
For the teacher: Reading, data comparison, listening and independent recommendation are linked in one evidence-to-decision cycle with a changed constraint.

This is a fictional classroom dataset. Treat every number as evidence with a scope and limit. Do not reward confident language when the evidence does not support it.
| Time | Teacher does | Student does | Required evidence |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0–3 | Shows the vendor claim and pilot summary without explaining the decision. | Labels three statements as supported, partly supported or not supported. | Claim/evidence distinction. |
| 3–7 | Elicits language for support, comparison, limits and uncertainty. | Repairs four overstrong statements. | Proportionate language. |
| 7–12 | Asks which criterion changes the decision and why. | Compares both options across five criteria. | Benefit, limitation, alternative. |
| 12–17 | Plays A01 once for gist and once for details. | Records the strongest result, clearest limit and one question. | Listening-based update. |
| 17–23 | Changes the priority and tests whether the recommendation adapts. | Revises the recommendation with a condition and monitoring plan. | Reasoned adaptation. |
| 23–30 | Plays A02 and scores the first unsupported final response. | Integrates all sources, decides, explains uncertainty and retries one weak criterion. | EVD / ADAPT / FP. |
Teacher standard: Ask “What supports that?” and “What would change your view?” Correct one evidence problem and one language problem only before the focused retry.
Separate what the supplier promises from what this small trial actually measured.
“The system saves 30% in every garden.”
“The trial suggests lower water use.”
“Manual checks are no longer needed.”
Accept approximately 17%. Ask for the scope after every answer: one site, one season, four weeks. Do not let the learner replace evidence with the vendor claim.
Use the language level that matches the evidence.
Require all three states: positive, neutral and negative. Check that more/equal/less comparisons are explicitly taught before they appear in the final task.
The committee must choose between a smart controller and an upgraded timer. No single criterion decides automatically.
| Criterion | Smart controller | Upgraded timer | Decision question |
|---|---|---|---|
| Water use | 1,180 L; about 17% below the old average. | 1,260 L; about 11% below the old average. | Is the extra reduction large enough to matter? |
| Plant condition | 8.1 / 10 | 8.0 / 10 | Is this difference meaningful or broadly equal? |
| Reliability | Two sensor failures after heavy rain. | No equipment failure in the pilot. | What fallback is available? |
| Purchase cost | $680 | $260 | What is the opportunity cost? |
| Workload | Some checks still required; time not measured. | Manual adjustment on two hot days. | Which workload evidence is missing? |
Ask the learner to rank two criteria before deciding. Challenge a cost-only or water-only answer by pointing to one competing criterion.
Listen once for the decision problem and once for the details that could change your provisional recommendation.
Key evidence: smart 20% lower water use; timer 12% lower; similar plant condition; three smart-sensor errors plus $120; timer needs about two volunteer hours weekly; next season drier; one option only.
Transcript: Here is the eight-week update from the garden trial. The smart system used twenty percent less water than the old schedule, while the upgraded timer used twelve percent less. Plant condition was similar under both systems. However, three smart-system sensors gave incorrect readings after heavy rain, and replacement parts added one hundred and twenty dollars. The timer had no equipment failure, but volunteers spent about two hours each week checking and adjusting it. Next season is expected to be drier. The committee can fund only one option, so please decide which evidence matters most, identify one unanswered question and recommend a proportionate next step.
Play once for gist and once for evidence. Permit one focused replay only if a decision-changing detail is missing. Require an oral update before opening the transcript.
A good recommendation changes only when the new constraint changes the balance of evidence.
Reduce water use while keeping plant condition stable.
The garden now has fewer volunteers, but heavy rain is also more likely during the first month.
Do not accept a changed recommendation without a changed reason. Ask for the exact evidence or constraint that moved the balance.
Listen to an independent review, combine it with the earlier sources and give a complete decision without a model.
No model. Use evidence notes only.
An independent six-month review of a similar garden has arrived. It found eighteen percent lower water use with the smart system. Plant condition was similar under both systems. Two sensors needed replacement, and the review did not measure volunteer training time. A local donor will now cover half of either system’s purchase cost, but the garden must choose within one week. Explain whether this new evidence strengthens, weakens or changes your recommendation, and state what should be monitored after the decision.
2: Compares two sources, separates claims from results and names a relevant limit/question.
1: Uses some accurate evidence but misses a source, limit or comparison.
0: Relies mainly on claims or misstates decision-changing evidence.
2: Revises or defends the recommendation explicitly because of new evidence/constraints.
1: Changes the answer with only a partial link to the new evidence.
0: Ignores the changed evidence or gives no reasoned adaptation.
2: Gives an independent, balanced decision with condition, monitoring signal and fallback.
1: Decision is understandable but needs a prompt or misses one required element.
0: Cannot complete a coherent evidence-based recommendation.
Target: 5/6 overall, EVD = 2 and no zero. Score the first unsupported performance, give one focused correction, then rerun only the weakest criterion.
Play A02 once for gist and once for evidence. Hide all model language. Score the first briefing, give one evidence correction and one language correction, then run a focused retry only.
May repeat a claim or choose an option from one attractive result.
Can compare sources, balance benefit and limitation, and revise a conditional recommendation.
Communicate complex uncertainty to a non-specialist audience.
