Why this lesson matters

For the learner: Short device explanations help you follow demonstrations, use unfamiliar equipment and ask for help.

For the teacher: The learner must separate the main meaning from ordered detail, then use the evidence to choose a practical action.

เหตุผลภาษาไทย: ผู้เรียนฝึกแยกใจความสำคัญ รายละเอียดตามลำดับ และนำข้อมูลที่ได้ยินไปเลือกการกระทำที่เหมาะสม

Why this lesson matters · เหตุผลที่เรียนบทนี้

For learners: Understand short explanations of how useful devices work, then choose a practical next action from what you hear.

For teachers: The lesson moves from prediction to gist, ordered details, evidence and transfer before an independent new-device listening task.

Your Goal

Identify the device, purpose and ordered process from short spoken explanations, then state one useful action.

Stage 1 · Predict

What information should you listen for?

4 min

Do not guess every word. Prepare four listening questions.

What is the device? What is it for? What happens first, next and finally? What action should the user take?
STUDENT TASK
  1. Read the four questions.
  2. Predict three words you may hear for a device demonstration.
  3. Say one useful sequence word and one action verb.
You are ready whenYou know the four kinds of information you must capture.
How to run Stage 1

Accept reasonable predictions such as sensor, battery, press, first or next. Do not confirm the device before the first listen.

Stage 2 · First listen

Listen for gist: device and purpose

5 min
Audio 1 · British English

1. Which device is described?

2. What is its main purpose?

STUDENT TASK
  1. Keep the transcript closed.
  2. Listen once without pausing.
  3. Choose the device and purpose.
  4. Say one complete sentence: “It is a ___, and it helps people ___.”
How to run Stage 2

Play once at 1×. Require the gist sentence before any replay. Evidence expected: automatic soap dispenser; clean hands without touching a pump.

Stage 3 · Second listen

Capture the ordered details

6 min

3. What happens first?

4. What does the motor do?

5. What happens finally?

6. What should the user do if no soap comes out?

STUDENT TASK
  1. Listen to Audio 1 a second time.
  2. Select four correct details.
  3. Number the process: sensor, signal, motor, soap.
  4. Use one focused replay only if one detail is missing.
How to run Stage 3

Pause only after the second full listen. Ask “What exact words did you hear?” before the optional focused replay. Do not allow unlimited replay.

Stage 4 · Evidence

Check the process against the transcript

5 min

Order the process

First: hand under sensor

Next: sensor detects and sends a signal

Then: motor pushes soap through the tube

Finally: soap drops onto the hand

Connect evidence to action

Evidence: no soap comes out

Useful action: check the battery and refill the container

Sentence: “Because no soap comes out, check the battery first.”

Audio 1 transcript · open after the evidence task

You are looking at an automatic soap dispenser. It helps people clean their hands without touching a pump. First, place your hand under the small sensor. The sensor detects your hand and sends a signal. Next, a tiny motor pushes soap through the tube. Finally, the soap drops onto your hand. If no soap comes out, check the battery and refill the container.

STUDENT TASK
  1. Open the transcript only now.
  2. Underline the device and purpose.
  3. Circle first, next and finally.
  4. Match four spoken details to your notes.
  5. Correct one note with: “I first wrote ___, but I heard ___.”
How to run Stage 4

Evidence must be tied to exact spoken language. Praise self-correction and ask the learner to repeat the corrected detail once.

Stage 5 · Transfer

Turn listening notes into a short explanation

5 min
Identify

It is a ___. It helps people ___.

Order

First, ___. Next, ___. Finally, ___.

Act

If ___, check / charge / refill ___.

STUDENT TASK
  1. Close the transcript.
  2. Use your notes to explain Audio 1 in 30 seconds.
  3. Include the device, purpose, three ordered steps and one useful action.
  4. Your partner asks one question beginning with how or what.
  5. Answer from the listening evidence, not from imagination.
You are ready whenYour explanation is ordered and your action matches the evidence.
How to run Stage 5

Allow keywords but no full script. The follow-up speaking move checks whether listening evidence can support a clear explanation.

FINAL PRACTICE
Stage 6 · New device

Listen, explain and choose the next action

5 min
Audio 2 · Australian English
FINAL PRACTICE
  1. Listen once and state the device and purpose.
  2. Listen a second time and record at least four ordered details.
  3. Give a 30-second explanation without the transcript.
  4. Situation change: the light is weak before an evening trip. State one useful action and the evidence for it.
  5. Teacher scores the first unsupported response, gives one focused correction and reruns only the weakest criterion.
Final evidence and transcript · open after scoring

Gist: a rechargeable bicycle light; helps a cyclist see and be seen at night.

Details: connect cable → charge battery → green light appears → remove cable → attach to handlebar → press button → press again for brightness.

Action: if the light is weak, charge it before the next trip.

Transcript: This is a rechargeable bicycle light. It helps a cyclist see and be seen at night. First, connect the cable and charge the battery. When the green light appears, remove the cable. Next, attach the light to the handlebar and press the top button. Press it again to change the brightness. If the light is weak, charge it before the next trip.

GIST · Main Meaning

2: Device and purpose are accurate after the first listen.

1: One is accurate or both need a prompt.

0: Device and purpose are not identified.

DET · Detail Evidence

2: Four or more details are accurate and ordered.

1: Two or three details are accurate or partly ordered.

0: Fewer than two usable details.

ACT · Useful Action

2: Gives the correct action and links it to evidence independently.

1: Gives a partly suitable action with support.

0: No suitable evidence-based action.

Target: 5/6 overall, ACT = 2 and no zero.

Score the first unsupported performance and the focused retry separately.

How to run Stage 6

Play once for gist and once for detail. Keep the transcript closed until scoring ends. Give one correction only, then rerun the weakest GIST, DET or ACT evidence.
