Vocabulary Builder: Food and Ordering
Review food, drink and ordering chunks before comparing restaurants.

Compare the options, match the diner and adapt your advice.
For learners: Learn to compare restaurant evidence, match a recommendation to a specific diner, respond to a concern and adapt when one condition changes before the B1 restaurant mastery task.
For teachers: TC-GS-01 moves from selective language choice to evidence comparison, supported recommendation, two-way exchange, listener adaptation and independent proof. Optional audio remains a collapsed reference and is not used as a listening score.
Compare two restaurants, recommend one for a specific diner with at least two relevant reasons, acknowledge one trade-off, respond to a concern, and adapt the recommendation when one condition changes.
For learners: A useful recommendation is not only “I like this place.” It connects real evidence to the needs of a particular diner and changes when their needs change.
For teachers: The lesson moves from selective language choice to evidence-based comparison, two-way discussion and an independent adapted recommendation.
This is a speaking lesson, not a reading lesson. Limit silent reading, hide models after selection, keep learner talk time above 70%, and correct after each complete speaking round.
| Time | Teacher does | Student does | Required result |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0–3 | Assigns one real diner profile. | Identifies the diner’s two strongest needs. | A clear listener and purpose. |
| 3–8 | Guides a selective language hunt. | Chooses four useful frames and explains each choice. | Tools, not a script. |
| 8–12 | Reveals two restaurant evidence cards. | Compares food, needs, price, atmosphere and limits. | Evidence before preference. |
| 12–17 | Prompts, then removes the model. | Builds a recommendation with two reasons and a trade-off. | A connected B1 message. |
| 17–21 | Challenges one reason. | Clarifies, concedes or checks missing information. | Two-way interaction. |
| 21–27 | Changes the diner or one condition. | Adapts the recommendation in two speaking rounds. | A meaningfully changed version. |
| 27–30 | Hides support, scores and sets one retry. | Completes a fresh recommendation and improves the weak point. | Independent evidence. |
Start with the person, not the restaurant. Choose one profile and identify the needs that should control the decision.
Vegetarian · quiet conversation · budget up to 300 baht · dinner at 7:00
Eats meat · quick meal near the station · budget up to 230 baht · dinner at 9:00
Assign a profile if the learner spends too long choosing. Ask “What must the restaurant provide?” and “What is only a preference?” Do not show the restaurant cards yet.
Choose one or two frames from each group. Do not read every line aloud.
Show a useful difference.
Connect the person to restaurant evidence.
Acknowledge a limit or missing fact.
Limit selection to ninety seconds. Check that “suitable for” names a person or need and that each reason can be supported by evidence. Hide unused frames.
Use only the facts below. Do not invent allergy safety, access or menu information.
| Restaurant | Food and dietary information | Price | Atmosphere and location | Opening limit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Green Table | Vegetable curries and salads; vegetarian and dairy-free dishes clearly marked | Average meal: 260 baht | Quiet; ten-minute walk from the station | Closes at 8:30 |
| City Grill | Burgers and grilled chicken; limited vegetarian choice; dairy-free status not confirmed | Average meal: 220 baht | Lively; three-minute walk from the station | Open until 11:00 |
For Maya, I’d recommend Green Table rather than City Grill. It clearly marks vegetarian and dairy-free dishes, and the dining room is quieter. It costs a little more and it is farther away, but it still fits her budget. If she needs a late dinner, however, we should choose another place because Green Table closes at eight thirty.
For Ken, City Grill is the better fit because it is near the station, stays open late, and has meals within his budget. The atmosphere may be noisy, so I would ask for a table away from the door. If he brings a vegetarian friend, I would not confirm the restaurant yet. I would call first and check the available dishes.
Ask for evidence after each claim: “Which fact tells you that?” Keep the model audio closed until the learner has completed the comparison. The audio is a reference, not a listening score.
Turn the evidence into one connected 45-second message.
Allow thirty seconds to plan keywords only. Hide the shape after the first attempt. Correct one connector or comparison after the learner completes the full message.
A recommendation must survive one real question or concern.
Choose one concern that genuinely tests the recommendation. Do not supply the repair language. If the evidence is missing, reward an honest checking action instead of an invented answer.
Keep the decision skill, but change the person or one condition.
For a strict allergy, require uncertainty language and a checking action. Never allow the learner to infer safety from “vegetarian” or “dairy-free.” Give one feedback point after both rounds.
Hide the models. Complete a fresh 60–75 second recommendation independently.
Score the unsupported Final Practice, then score the retry separately.
Target: 5/6 overall with no zero. Use the lowest focus as the retry target.
Observe the complete first attempt without interruption. Record exact evidence for COM, VR and FP, give one success and one improvement, then change only the weakest condition for the retry.
The CEFR Companion Volume informs the B1 focus on explaining reasons, comparing options, responding to a listener and adapting a connected recommendation.
