  3. Let the learner select and personalise useful language.
  4. Run supported practice, then remove the support.
  5. Delay feedback until the message is complete.
  6. Score the final task, give one improvement point and require a focused retry.

Understand the workplace outcome

A colleague is unavailable. One learner is the caller; the other must collect only the details needed for action.

Learner does: explain the listener, purpose and successful outcome in your own words.

Ask the learner to state the listener, purpose and successful outcome in plain English. Move on only when the task is clear.

Study the model exchange

Receiver: I am afraid Mei is in a meeting. Can I take a message?
Caller: Yes, please ask her to call Daniel Ortiz about order 4762 before 3 p.m.
Receiver: Let me confirm: Daniel Ortiz, order four-seven-six-two, and she should call before three. Is that right?
Learner does: identify the job of each part of the model before borrowing any language.

Use the model once for meaning. Ask what each part achieves; do not turn the model into a long read-aloud exercise.

Build the phrase path

Guided role play

Learner does: Take a message about an order.

Use keywords only. Change names, figures, reasons and actions so the message is yours.

Give prompts or keywords, not a full script. Require the learner to make the content true for the situation.

Change one condition and respond

  1. Change the name, number, reason and deadline.
  2. Leave a message, then listen while your partner reads it back.

Retry rule: after feedback, repeat the weakest part with one changed condition.

Take the other role or act as the reader. Change one realistic fact after the first attempt and delay correction until the message is complete.

Final role play · prove the skill

Complete two message exchanges with every action detail correct and no unnecessary questions.

Success: complete the task independently and make the listener’s next action or understanding clear.

Do not supply wording during the final task. Score the three Progress Focus areas, give one precise improvement point and run a shorter retry.
