Which Object Are They Describing?
Listen for material, texture, pattern, shape, and use—then prove your choice.
People often describe an object without saying its name. This lesson helps you connect several spoken clues and choose the right object with evidence.
Why this lesson matters · เหตุผลที่เรียนบทนี้
For learners: Listen for connected clues so you can identify everyday objects even when the speaker does not say their names.
For teachers: The lesson moves from a visible object board to gist listening, detail evidence, clue-language transfer, and an independent listening challenge with a new accent.
สำหรับผู้เรียน: ฝึกฟังคำบอกลักษณะที่เชื่อมโยงกัน เพื่อระบุสิ่งของได้แม้ผู้พูดไม่ได้บอกชื่อโดยตรง
สำหรับครู: ลำดับจากดูตัวเลือก ฟังใจความ จับรายละเอียด ตรวจหลักฐาน นำภาษาไปใช้ และจบด้วยภารกิจฟังสำเนียงใหม่แบบอิสระ
Your goal
Identify an everyday object from connected spoken clues and explain which clues prove your answer.
เป้าหมายภาษาไทย
ฟังคำบอกลักษณะหลายข้อ เชื่อมโยงข้อมูล แล้วระบุวัตถุพร้อมบอกหลักฐานจากเสียงอย่างน้อย 2 ข้อ
Why this listening skill matters
- You can find or identify things when the speaker does not know the exact name.
- You can listen for more than one clue instead of guessing from a single word.
- You can explain your choice clearly in shops, classrooms, homes, and workplaces.
Progress Focus · Lesson structure
Catch material, texture, pattern, shape, colour, and use clues.
Give two spoken clues that prove each choice.
Teacher Lesson Plan · Read before class
| Time | Teacher does | Student does | Evidence |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0–4 | Displays the six objects and reviews clue categories only. | Predicts two useful clues for three objects. | Six relevant clue words. |
| 4–9 | Plays Audio 1 once without pausing or transcript. | Chooses objects 1–3 and notes confidence. | Three gist choices. |
| 9–15 | Replays Audio 1 once. | Records material, surface or pattern, and use evidence. | Two clues per answer. |
| 15–20 | Reveals answers, then transcripts. | Checks exact words and corrects one weak answer. | Evidence-based corrections. |
| 20–24 | Models one clue chain, then removes the model. | Describes a new mystery object without naming it. | Three connected clues. |
| 24–30 | Plays Audio 2 up to two times and scores independently. | Chooses objects 4–6 and reports two clues for each. | Independent final performance. |
1Prepare the object board
Look at the six choices. Predict which clue types will help you tell them apart.
- Choose three objects.
- Say two clue words for each object.
- Predict which two objects may be easiest to confuse and why.
Teacher Help
Check that learners understand the six choices, but do not read the printed clues aloud. Accept simple predictions such as “made of metal” or “used for food.”
2First listen · choose the objects
Listen once. Focus on the best match, not every word.
- Choose A–F for descriptions 1, 2, and 3.
- Write one word you heard for each answer.
- Mark your confidence: sure / maybe / not sure.
Check the gist
1 — A, metal bottle. Key word: metal / silver / walk.
2 — B, cotton pouch. Key word: cotton / stripes / zip.
3 — C, ceramic cup. Key word: ceramic / flowers / tea.
Teacher Help
Play Audio 1 once at normal speed with no pausing. Ask for all three letters before opening the answer. A gist choice is enough at this stage.
3Second listen · collect the details
Replay Audio 1 once. Complete the evidence cards with short notes.

Strongest clue for 1: __________
Strongest clue for 2: __________
Strongest clue for 3: __________
- Write keywords only.
- Underline one material clue and circle one appearance clue for each object.
- Explain each choice with: “It must be ___ because it is ___ and ___.”
Answer check
1: metal; smooth and silver; tall with a narrow neck; carried on a walk. 2: cotton; soft with dark blue and white stripes; zip; keeps small things. 3: ceramic; hard with small red and orange flowers; handle; used for tea.
Teacher Help
Allow one replay of Audio 1. Require two different clue types per answer—for example material plus use, not “silver” plus “metal” alone.
4Check the spoken evidence
Open the transcript only after you have committed your answers.
Audio 1 transcript
One. I am looking for something I carry on a walk. It is tall, smooth, and silver. It is made of metal. It is plain and has a narrow neck.
Two. I keep small things in this. It is soft and made of cotton. It has dark blue and white stripes, and it closes with a zip.
Three. I drink tea from this. It is hard and made of ceramic. It is decorated with small red and orange flowers, and it has a handle.
- Highlight the material word in each description.
- Underline one texture or pattern phrase.
- Box the use or special-part clue.
- Correct one note that was too general or inaccurate.
Teacher Help
Ask “Which exact words prove it?” Learners should point to two phrases in the transcript, then close it and repeat the evidence from memory.
5Transfer · build a clue chain
Describe an object clearly without saying its name.
Start: This object is…
Add material and appearance: It is made of… Its surface/pattern is…
Finish with use or part: You use it for… / It has…
- Choose a classroom, home, or work object.
- Give three connected clues: material + appearance + use or special part.
- Your partner guesses and repeats the two strongest clues.
- Change one clue if the answer is not clear.
Possible model
This object is small and rectangular. It is made of soft black leather. It opens in the middle, and you use it to carry cards and money. Answer: a wallet.
Teacher Help
Model the three-part frame once, then hide it. Do not accept the object name inside the clue chain. Ask the listener to repeat evidence before guessing.
6Final Practice · identify three new objects
Listen to Audio 2. Choose the object and report two clues that prove each answer.
- Listen once and choose A–F for descriptions 4, 5, and 6.
- Listen one more time and write two different clue types for each answer.
- Report: “Number ___ is ___ because…”
- Complete the task without opening the transcript first.
Final answer and evidence
4 — D, grey stone: rough and grey; comes from nature / found beside a path.
5 — E, wooden spoon: made of smooth light-brown wood; handle and rounded end for food.
6 — F, plastic lunch box: hard plastic food box; white with dark blue spots / lid and blue clip.
Audio 2 transcript · open after the task
Four. This object is small, hard, and rough. It is grey and comes from nature. It is not made in a factory, and you might find it beside a path.
Five. This item is long, light brown, and made of wood. Its surface is smooth. It has a handle and a small rounded end that can hold or move food.
Six. This is a hard plastic box for carrying food. It is white with dark blue spots. It has a lid and a blue clip on the front.
Teacher Help
Allow up to two complete listening rounds. Do not pause, reveal the transcript, or supply clue words. Score object choice, detail accuracy, and evidence separately.
Teacher scoring guide
0 · Not yet
The learner identifies fewer than two objects or cannot give supporting spoken clues after one neutral prompt.
1 · With support
The learner identifies at least two objects but needs replay, choices, or a frame to report two clues.
2 · Independent
The learner identifies all three objects and gives two accurate, distinct clues for each without transcript support.
