Routine and temporary change
Listen for the normal routine, the temporary change and its time frame.

Choose the present-time viewpoint that makes a routine, current action, trend or attitude clear.
For learners: The present simple and present continuous help a listener separate routines and stable facts from temporary or changing actions.
For teachers: Learners move from present-time viewpoint meaning to time markers and form choices, repair contrasts, listen to Australian and Indian speakers, and finish with an independent update plus focused retry.
By the end of this lesson, you can distinguish four present-time meanings, create six true sentences with both tenses, and explain one current change in your life.
แยกความหมายปัจจุบัน 4 แบบ เลือก Present Simple หรือ Present Continuous ตามสิ่งที่ต้องการสื่อ สร้างประโยคจริง 6 ประโยค และอธิบายการเปลี่ยนแปลงหนึ่งเรื่องในชีวิต
Both tenses talk about the present, but they guide the listener to a different viewpoint: stable pattern, action now, temporary change, developing trend or repeated behaviour with attitude.
ภาษาไทย: ทั้งสอง tense พูดถึงปัจจุบันได้ แต่ทำให้ผู้ฟังมองเหตุการณ์ต่างกัน จึงต้องเลือกจากความหมาย ไม่ใช่จำจากคำบอกเวลาอย่างเดียว
Treat tense as a viewpoint choice. Keep each form attached to a communicative meaning and require learners to explain what changes for the listener.
| Stage | Teacher move | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| 1 · Meaning | Map four viewpoints. | Eight meaning decisions |
| 2 · Form | Contrast complete tense frames. | Eight paired frames |
| 3 · Evidence | Justify tense choices. | Ten choices + rewrites |
| 4 · Listen | Recover viewpoint and form. | Two listening maps |
| 5 · Plan | Contrast stable and changing facts. | Six true-sentence notes |
| 6 · Perform | Score MEAN/FORM/USE and retry. | Explanation + retry |
Choose the intended meaning before looking for a time expression.
| Meaning | Tense choice | Useful example |
|---|---|---|
| routine or regular fact | Present Simple | Sam works at the front desk most weeks. |
| action in progress now | Present Continuous | He is moving the books now. |
| temporary current situation or trend | Present Continuous | He is helping a new team this month. |
| repeated action with speaker attitude | Present Continuous with always | She is always borrowing my charger. |
Accept more than one tense only when the learner can explain the resulting meaning change. Do not teach time words as automatic tense switches.
Build the full frame, including auxiliaries in negatives and questions.
| Function | Present Simple | Present Continuous |
|---|---|---|
| affirmative | I work · she works | I am working · she is working |
| negative | I do not work · she does not work | I am not working · she is not working |
| question | Do you work? · Does she work? | Are you working? · Is she working? |
| short answer | Yes, I do. · No, she does not. | Yes, I am. · No, she is not. |
Present Simple questions use do/does + base verb. Present Continuous questions move am/is/are before the subject and keep verb-ing.
Keep the same subject and base meaning when comparing forms. This makes the tense contrast visible instead of mixing it with new vocabulary.
Connect each grammatical choice to what the speaker wants the listener to understand.
| Evidence question | If yes… | Example decision |
|---|---|---|
| Is it generally true or repeated? | Present Simple | The café opens at seven. |
| Can we observe it in progress? | Present Continuous | I am meeting a client now. |
| Is it temporary or developing? | Present Continuous | More people are ordering online. |
| Does always show irritation or criticism? | Present Continuous | He is always interrupting me. |
| Is always neutral frequency? | Present Simple | He always arrives early. |
Ask “What changes for the listener?” A correct label without a meaning explanation is not yet B1 control.
Recover both the form and the speaker’s present-time viewpoint.
Listen for the normal routine, the temporary change and its time frame.
Classify routine, action now, developing trend and repeated action with attitude.
| Pass | Record | Question |
|---|---|---|
| 1 · Meaning | four meaning labels | What viewpoint does the speaker choose? |
| 2 · Form | subject + verb frame | Which tense carries that meaning? |
| 3 · Evidence | time frame or attitude | What supports the choice? |
Accent variety tests transfer. Replay only after learners state the meaning they are listening for.
Contrast what is normally true with what is happening differently now.
| Message move | Notes only | Language target |
|---|---|---|
| normal pattern | usual work/study/life fact | Present Simple |
| current difference | temporary action or situation | Present Continuous |
| two supporting details | people · place · activity | both tenses |
| developing trend | one wider change | is/are becoming · changing |
| reason or effect | because · so | connected explanation |
| follow-up | one likely question | Why…? · How long…? |
Require a genuine contrast. If nothing is changing, let the learner use a realistic temporary scenario but label it clearly as imagined.
Make the listener understand both the stable pattern and the current change.
Result: 0–2 Rebuild · 3–4 Developing · 5–6 B1 performance evidence.
Score the first independent explanation. Give one target only and record whether the retry improves viewpoint meaning, tense form or connected real use.
You can now choose between Present Simple and Present Continuous from the speaker’s intended present-time viewpoint and explain one genuine current change. Continue through the Dynamic Learning Graph below.
