Why this lesson matters · เหตุผลที่เรียนบทนี้

For learners: Frequency language makes routine descriptions precise before you listen, ask and negotiate time with other people.

For teachers: The lesson moves from meaning to two word positions, then to listening evidence, true sentences, real comparison and a scored retry.

Teacher Lesson Plan

Start with meaning. Let learners decide how often a habit is true before naming the position rule. Elicit “before a main verb” and “after am/is/are”, then move from controlled choices to real comparison.

StageTeacher moveEvidence to collect
1Elicit six real habits and place them on the scale.Six meaning choices
2Contrast a main verb with be before giving the rule. Two correct position rules
3Play both profiles; require the word that proves each rank.Ranked habits + evidence words
4Check that every sentence is both accurate and true.Six true sentences
5Prompt only with “How often?” and one follow-up.Similarity, difference, follow-up
6Score the first attempt, target one change, allow a focused retry.Independent comparison + retry
1 · Build meaning

Place habits on a frequency scale

always100%
usuallymost days
oftenmany times
sometimessome days
hardly everalmost never
never0%

Choose six real habits. Place each habit from always to never. Use hardly ever when something happens, but not often.

How to run Stage 1

4 min: Collect six real habits, ask “How often is this true?”, and keep the focus on meaning.

2 · Notice the pattern

Position the frequency adverb

PatternWord orderExample
Main verbsubject + adverb + verbI usually walk to work.
Verb besubject + am/is/are + adverbI am usually tired after work.
QuestionHow often + do/does + subject + verb?How often do you cook?

Choose the correct position. Remember: never is already negative—say “I never drive”, not “I don’t never drive”.

Check the position

Main verb: before the verb. am/is/are: after be. Question: How often do/does…?

How to run Stage 2

4 min: Elicit the two positions from examples, check one question, then close the answer check before practice.

3 · Listen for meaning

Rank the speaker’s habits

Engduo Audio: Listen for meaning first. Audio never starts automatically.

Engduo Audio • American English

Listen for frequency words before main verbs and after be.

Engduo Audio • British English

Rank the habits from most frequent to least frequent.

Listen to both profiles. Put each habit on the frequency scale and identify one sentence with be. Explain which word gave you the answer.

How to run Stage 3

5 min: Play both profiles, rank the habits, and ask learners to name the frequency word that proves each answer.

4 · Practise with support

Build accurate habit sentences

Write key words for six habits. Make four sentences with a main verb and two with be. Move the adverb if the sentence sounds unclear or changes the intended meaning.

How to run Stage 4

5 min: Build six accurate, true sentences—four with main verbs and two with be.

5 · Communicate

Compare three real habits

Ask How often do you…? Compare three habits, find one similarity and one difference, and ask a follow-up about the most surprising answer.

How to run Stage 5

5 min: Run the three-habit comparison; collect one similarity, one difference, and one relevant follow-up.

6 · Final evidence

Final Practice: Compare how often routines are true

Task: Discuss three real habits using at least four frequency adverbs. Include one sentence with be, identify one similarity and one difference, and ask one relevant follow-up.

Success: The frequency words match the intended meaning, their positions are accurate, and the learner completes the comparison without teacher-supplied sentences.

MEAN · Meaning

0 Frequency meaning is unclear or contradictory.

1 Most choices fit after a prompt or self-correction.

2 Every frequency word matches the intended real habit.

FORM · Form

0 Position errors repeatedly obscure the message.

1 Main-verb and be positions become clear with support.

2 Frequency adverbs are placed accurately with both patterns.

USE · Real use

0 The comparison is not yet completed.

1 The learner completes most parts with visible prompts.

2 The learner gives a similarity, difference and follow-up independently.

Result: 0–2 Rebuild · 3–4 Developing · 5–6 Pilot mastery evidence.

Feedback + retry: Keep the first score. Choose one target—meaning, position or follow-up—then retry only the weakest two sentences.

How to run Stage 6

7 min: Score MEAN, FORM and USE from 0–2 on the first attempt, give one precise target, and record whether the focused retry improves it.
