Why this lesson matters · เหตุผลที่เรียนบทนี้

For learners: Manner adverbs help a listener understand not only what happened, but how the action affected the result.

For teachers: Learners build meaning before form, choose natural placement, repair unclear feedback, listen to New Zealand and British speakers, and finish with result-focused feedback plus a focused retry.

Your Goal

By the end of this lesson, you can form common manner adverbs, place them naturally, and give feedback that links how an action is performed to its result.

Why this lesson matters

Manner adverbs make instructions and feedback more precise. They help the listener understand not only what happened, but how the action created its result.

MEAN · MeaningConnect how an action is performed to its observable result.
FORM · FormBuild common manner adverbs and place them naturally.
USE · Real useGive specific feedback supported by evidence and one useful next step.

Teacher Lesson Plan

Keep every form connected to observable action and result. The goal is useful feedback, not an isolated -ly worksheet.

1 · MeaningConnect manner and consequence.Eight meaning matches
2 · FormBuild regular and special forms.Ten formed adverbs
3 · PlacementProtect natural verb–object order.Eight placements + repair

5 · PlanRequire observable evidence.Four feedback notes
6 · PerformScore MEAN/FORM/USE and retry.Feedback + focused retry

Stage 1 · Match manner to result

Decide what “how” information the listener needs and what result it creates.

  1. Match eight actions to a useful manner and result.
  2. Say each link aloud: “She packs it carefully, so it stays safe.”
  3. Choose two actions where a different manner changes the result.
Finish evidenceEight meaning matches and two explained result changes.
Teacher Help · Stage 1

Keep the focus on communicative meaning: the adverb answers how and helps the listener predict or evaluate the result.

Stage 2 · Build common manner adverbs

Form the adverb, then check the special forms instead of adding -ly automatically.

  1. Form ten manner adverbs from the prompts.
  2. Sort them into the five patterns.
  3. Repair: “She works hardly” when the intended meaning is “with a lot of effort.”
  4. Explain why “friendly” is not a regular manner adverb.
Check the special forms

hard means with effort; hardly means almost not. Use “in a friendly way” when you need to describe how someone acts.

Finish evidenceTen formed adverbs and two explained exceptions.
Teacher Help · Stage 2

Require the learner to say the base adjective and the completed adverb. Contrast hard/hardly and good/well through meaning, not memorisation alone.

Stage 3 · Place the adverb naturally

Put manner information close to the action without splitting a verb from its object.

5 minutes
STUDENT TASK

  1. Reorder eight word sets into natural sentences.
  2. Underline the verb and circle its object.
  3. Repair: “She packed carefully the glass.”
  4. Compare “a careful driver” with “drives carefully.”
Finish evidenceEight natural placements, one repair and one adjective–adverb contrast.
Teacher Help · Stage 3

Prefer the clearest neutral position after the verb or object. Accept marked front or mid-position only when the learner can explain the focus.

Stage 4 · Listen for manner and consequence

Recover how an action was performed and connect it to what happened next.

5 minutes
STUDENT TASK
New Zealand English · Aria

Pack the glass safely

Listen for three manner adverbs and the safety result.

British English · Arthur

Evaluate two deliveries

Listen for how each action affected the result, then give one useful feedback point.

PassRecordQuestion
1 · Mannerthe adverb or manner phraseHow was the action performed?
2 · Resultwhat happened nextWhat consequence followed?
3 · Feedbackone precise improvementWhat should the person do differently?
  1. Listen once and identify the overall result.
  2. Listen again and recover at least six manner words.
  3. Connect each manner detail to its consequence.
  4. Give one feedback sentence after audio 2.
Finish evidenceTwo listening maps, six recovered manner details and one feedback sentence.
Teacher Help · Stage 4

Accent variety supports transfer. Ask for the manner–result link before replaying; transcription alone is not the goal.

Stage 5 · Plan evidence-based feedback

Describe what happened, evaluate how it was done and propose one useful change.

  1. Choose a real task: giving directions, packing, presenting or helping a customer.
  2. Plan three positive manner details and one improvement.
  3. Link every evaluation to observable evidence or a result.
  4. Prepare one follow-up question for your partner.
Finish evidenceFour evidence-linked manner notes and one actionable next step.
Teacher Help · Stage 5

Do not accept vague “good/bad” feedback. Each adverb must describe an observable action and connect to a result the learner can justify.

Stage 6 · Final Practice: demonstrate, evaluate and retry

Use manner language to make feedback precise, fair and useful.

6 minutes
STUDENT TASK
FINAL PRACTICE

Demonstrate → observe → link manner to result → improve → retry

  1. Partner A demonstrates or explains a short real task for 45–60 seconds.
  2. Partner B records three things done effectively and one point to improve.
  3. Give 60–75 seconds of feedback using at least six manner adverbs.
  4. Link every important manner detail to a result with so, because or which meant.
  5. Answer one challenge: “What evidence supports that feedback?”
  6. Retry the weakest instruction or feedback section after one focused target.
Feedback model: “You explained the first step clearly, so I knew where to begin. You moved through the last two steps too quickly, which meant I missed the safety check.”

Score the first independent performance

MEAN · MeaningThe listener understands how each important action was performed and what result followed.
FORM · FormCommon manner adverbs are formed accurately and placed naturally without separating the verb from its object.
USE · Real useThe learner gives specific, evidence-based feedback and proposes one useful next action without teacher-supplied sentences.
0 · Not yetManner, evidence or result remains unclear.
1 · With supportThe feedback works after one form, placement or evidence prompt.
2 · IndependentThe learner links accurate manner language to results and a useful next step independently.

Result: 0–2 Rebuild · 3–4 Developing · 5–6 A2 performance evidence.

Finish evidenceEight meaning matches + ten formed adverbs + eight placement decisions + two listening maps + evidence-based feedback + one focused retry.
Teacher Help · Stage 6

Score the first independent feedback. Give one target only, then record whether the retry improves meaning, adverb form/placement or useful real-world feedback.
