1. Frame the group decision

3 min

A good order begins with people, limits and questions—not with your favourite dish.

People

Who is eating, and what must each person avoid or prefer?

Order

How many starters, mains and drinks are needed?

Limits

What is the total budget, and what information needs staff confirmation?

STUDENT TASK
  1. Predict four details you need before choosing the meal.
  2. Write one question about dietary needs and one question about the budget.
  3. Explain why “vegetarian” does not automatically mean “safe for a peanut allergy.”
You are ready whenYour plan separates preference, quantity, budget and safety confirmation.
Teacher Help

Keep this stage quick. Accept useful predictions, but do not reveal the diner profile. Reinforce that the learner must check uncertainty rather than promise safety.

2. Listen for diner needs

4 min

Listen first for the group plan. Listen again for each diner, the quantities, the budget and the required check.

Audio 1 · British English · Amy Neural · 21 seconds
STUDENT TASK
  1. Name the three diners and one need for each.
  2. Record the number of starters and main dishes.
  3. State the total budget and whether drinks are included.
  4. Name the information the restaurant must confirm.
Group noteMina needs ___. Dan would like ___. The speaker prefers ___. They need ___ starter(s), ___ main(s), and the total must stay under ___.
You are ready whenAll four parts match the audio without adding information.
Open after the second listening · Audio 1 transcript

There are three of us tonight. Mina is vegetarian and cannot eat peanuts. Dan would like chicken, and I prefer something mild. We can spend up to nine hundred baht altogether, including drinks. We would like one starter to share and three main dishes. Please check any allergy information with the restaurant rather than guessing.

Teacher Help · audio order

Play once for the group plan and once for details. Ask the learner to correct their own notes before opening the transcript. Do not pre-teach every food word.

3. Read and test the menu

5 min

Match stated menu facts to the diner profile. Unknown kitchen safety remains unknown until staff confirm it.

ItemType and priceMenu informationDecision question
Cucumber saladShared starter · 100 bahtVegetarian; shared kitchenCan staff confirm the allergy procedure?
Vegetable curryMain · 190 bahtVegetarian; peanut-free ingredients; shared kitchenIs it available and safely prepared?
Tomato pastaMain · 200 bahtVegetarian; no peanuts listedCan staff confirm the kitchen procedure?
Chicken riceMain · 220 bahtGrilled chicken; medium spiceDoes Dan want the regular spice level?
Mild fish soupMain · 200 bahtWhite fish; mild brothDoes it match the speaker’s preference?
Tofu noodle bowlMain · 180 bahtVegetarian; peanut sauceWhich diner must avoid this?
WaterDrink · 30 baht eachStill or sparklingHow many are needed?
STUDENT TASK
  1. Choose one starter, three mains and three drinks.
  2. Match one main dish to each diner and explain the menu evidence.
  3. Calculate the total and keep it within 900 baht.
  4. Identify one choice that is clearly unsuitable and one choice that still needs confirmation.

You are ready whenYour total is correct, every dish matches a stated need, and uncertainty is labelled honestly.
Teacher Help

Require the learner to show the calculation and cite the menu. If they treat “peanut-free ingredients” as a complete safety guarantee, point back to “shared kitchen” and ask what must be confirmed.

4. Recommend and place the order

5 min

Turn the evidence into a short recommendation, then order in a sequence the server can confirm.

Recommend

For Mina, I’d recommend … because …

Order

We’d like one … to share, followed by …

Check

Could you confirm whether …? Could you repeat the total?

STUDENT TASK
  1. Recommend the shared meal with one reason for each main dish.
  2. Place the complete order: starter, three mains and drinks.
  3. State Mina’s allergy clearly and ask the server to check the kitchen procedure.
  4. Ask one quantity or spice clarification question.
  5. Confirm the total and compare it with the budget.
Order shape—not a script
We’d like ___ to share. For the mains, could we have ___, ___ and ___? One diner cannot eat ___, so could you please confirm ___? We’ll also have ___. Could you repeat the order and total?
You are ready whenThe server can repeat the full order, the allergy check and the expected total accurately.

Teacher Help · server role

Repeat one quantity incorrectly so the learner must repair it. Do not supply the allergy-check question. Accept natural hesitation, but require a clear final confirmation.

5. Respond to the restaurant update

6 min

A useful plan must change when availability or safety information changes.

Audio 2 · Indian English · Kajal Neural · 21 seconds
STUDENT TASK
  1. Summarise what sold out and what replacement was offered.
  2. Explain why the offered replacement does not fit Mina.
  3. Identify the possible alternative and the information still needing confirmation.
  4. Revise the order and calculate the new total.
  5. Tell the server what to keep, remove and check.
Repair routeThank you for letting us know. Please remove ___. The ___ will not work because ___. Could you check ___ for the ___? If it is suitable, we’ll change the order to ___. The new total should be ___.
You are ready whenYour revised order is suitable, within budget and clear about the remaining uncertainty.
Open after the response · Audio 2 transcript

I’m sorry, but the vegetable curry has sold out. We can offer the tofu noodle bowl instead. It is vegetarian, but the kitchen uses peanuts, so I cannot confirm that it is safe for a peanut allergy. The tomato pasta is prepared without peanuts, although I still need to check the kitchen procedure. Would you like a few minutes to change the order?

Teacher Help

Play twice. Do not reveal the transcript before the learner revises the order. Ask “What changed, what remains uncertain, and what is the new total?” A responsible delay for staff confirmation is a valid response.

6. Final Practice · manage the full visit

7 min

Close the transcripts and model language. Complete a fresh restaurant interaction from decision to problem resolution.

New diner card

Three colleagues need one shared starter, three mains and three waters for no more than 850 baht. Arun avoids dairy, Bee wants a vegetarian dish, and Carla prefers mild food. The server will announce one unavailable dish after the first order. At the end, the bill includes an extra 60-baht juice that nobody ordered.

FINAL PRACTICE
  1. Use the menu to recommend a meal and show the total.
  2. Place the complete order and ask one dietary-information question.
  3. Listen to the teacher’s unavailable-item update.
  4. Clarify the change and adapt the meal without exceeding the budget.
  5. Check the final bill, identify the extra juice and request a polite correction.
  6. After one feedback point, retry the weakest 30-second section independently.

Final Practice evidence

COM · CommunicationThe recommendation, order, change and bill repair are connected and easy to follow.
VR · Vocabulary rangeFood, quantity, dietary, checking and polite problem language fit the situation.
FP · Final performanceThe learner independently adapts the order and resolves the bill problem.

Teacher scoring guide

Score the first unsupported performance, then score the retry separately.

0 · Not yetThe criterion is not demonstrated after one clear prompt.
1 · With supportThe criterion is partly demonstrated or needs supplied language.
2 · IndependentThe criterion is clear without a model or supplied line. Natural hesitation is acceptable.

Target: 5/6 overall with FP = 2 and no zero. Use the lowest focus as the retry target.

The lesson is complete whenYou independently recommend, order, clarify, adapt and solve one routine restaurant problem.
Teacher Help · scoring and retry

Use the new diner card, not the worked group. Choose one unavailable item that forces a meaningful change. Let the learner notice the bill error. Record exact COM, VR and FP evidence, give one success and one next target, then allow one focused retry.
