Catch the problem and at least two key details.

What Went Wrong with the Order?
Identify the service problem, collect the details that prove it and confirm the next action.
A useful listener does more than catch “there is a problem.” This lesson trains you to separate the problem, the evidence and the agreed next step.
Why this lesson matters · เหตุผลที่เรียนบทนี้
For learners: Listen for a routine service problem, the details that matter and the agreed next step.
For teachers: The lesson moves from prediction to gist, detail and spoken evidence before the learner confirms the solution in a fresh final listening task.
Your goal
By the end of this lesson, you can identify a customer-service problem, two supporting details and the agreed next action from a short conversation.
Why this listening skill matters
- You can understand what went wrong without needing every word.
- You can check details such as order number, item, time and evidence.
- You can leave a service conversation knowing exactly what will happen next.
Progress Focus · Lesson structure
Separate evidence from the agreed action.
Report the problem and next step with the transcript closed.
Teacher Lesson Plan · Read before class
Before class: Test both audio buttons. Keep transcripts and answer checks closed.
- Let the learner predict the likely service problem from the cover and choices.
- Play Audio 1 once for the main problem only.
- Replay once for evidence and the agreed action.
- Use Audio 2 as a transfer task with a different accent and service setting.
- Run the final report with no transcript. Give one correction and retry only the weakest part.
Teacher-talk rule: Ask for evidence from the recording. Do not explain the story before the learner listens.
Engduo Audio: Two Amazon Polly generative voices provide Australian and Indian English. Audio never starts automatically. Open a transcript only after the learner has listened and made a choice.
1Predict the service story
- Look at the cover. Who may be the customer?
- Choose two problems you expect to hear.
- Say one detail that could prove each problem.
How to run Stage 1
Accept any sensible prediction. Pre-teach only receipt and replacement if needed. Do not reveal which problem appears in either recording.
2Listen once for the main problem
Keep the transcript closed. Listen for the problem, not every detail.
Audio 1 · Phone order
Australian English · Olivia · Amazon Polly Generative
Choose: a shirt is missing · the package is damaged · the colour is wrong
Check the main problem
One blue shirt is missing.
Transcript — open after listening
Yesterday, I called customer service about order four eight two one. I ordered two blue shirts, but only one arrived. The package was not damaged. The service assistant checked the order and apologised. She said the second shirt had been packed separately. It will arrive on Friday, and I do not need to pay another delivery fee. I asked her to send a confirmation message. She agreed, and we ended the call knowing the next step.
Audio 2 · Shop return
Indian English · Kajal · Amazon Polly Generative
Choose: it will not turn on · it will not heat water · the receipt is missing
Check the main problem
The coffee maker turns on but does not heat the water.
Transcript — open after listening
On Monday, I took a new coffee maker back to the shop. It turned on, but it did not heat the water. I had the receipt, but the original box was at home. The assistant asked when I bought it and tested the machine. She offered a replacement or a refund. I chose a replacement because I still needed the same model. The new machine will be ready after three o’clock tomorrow. I must bring the receipt when I collect it.
How to run Stage 2
Play each recording once at 1×. Ask “What is the main problem?” Accept a short answer. Do not replay until the learner has made a first choice for both recordings.
3Listen again and collect key details
- Replay once.
- Write two details that prove or explain the problem.
- Separate what happened from what did not happen.
Audio 1 evidence
Order number
Quantity ordered / received
Check Audio 1 evidence
Order 4821; two blue shirts ordered; one arrived; the package was not damaged.
Audio 2 evidence
Product behaviour
Evidence the customer has
Check Audio 2 evidence
It turns on but does not heat water; the customer has the receipt; the original box is at home.
How to run Stage 3
Allow one replay per recording. Ask “Which exact words support your answer?” If the learner guesses, replay only the relevant recording rather than opening the transcript immediately.
4Check the action and transfer the language
- State what the assistant offered.
- State what the customer chose.
- State when or how the action will happen.
- Use this frame: “The problem was ____. The evidence was ____. They agreed to ____.”
Audio 1
Offer / explanation: the shirt was packed separately.
Agreed action: it will arrive Friday; confirmation message; no extra fee.
Audio 2
Offer: replacement or refund.
Agreed action: replacement after 3 p.m. tomorrow; bring the receipt.
How to run Stage 4
Keep the learner’s report to three sentences. Correct only a detail that changes meaning, such as Friday versus tomorrow or refund versus replacement. Ask for an immediate corrected version.
5Final listening challenge
- Teacher chooses Audio 1 or Audio 2 without telling you which details will be checked.
- Listen once and complete a spoken service report: problem → two details → agreed action.
- Answer one follow-up question from the teacher.
- After feedback, retry only the weakest sentence.
Useful report frame: “The customer contacted the company because ____. We know this because ____ and ____. The agreed next step is ____.”
How to run Stage 5
Use the transcript closed and one play at 1×. Score LIST, CM and FP. Ask one evidence question such as “What proves that?” Give one correction only, then replay and let the learner retry the weakest sentence.
