Understand the workplace outcome

A project request is broad and partly ambiguous. Ask about users, scope, constraints, evidence and success before agreeing to work.

Study the model exchange

Client: We need a simpler reporting dashboard.
You: Who will use it most often, and which decision should it help them make?
Client: Regional managers need to see weekly service risks.
You: Which risks must appear, and what would make the first version successful?

Build the phrase path

User and purpose

Guided role play

Learner does: Clarify a broad request without proposing a solution.

Use keywords only. Change names, figures, reasons and actions so the message is yours.

Give prompts or keywords, not a full script. Require the learner to make the content true for the situation.

Change one condition and respond

  1. Expose one hidden assumption and one scope boundary.
  2. Read back the agreed requirement and success criteria.

Retry rule: after feedback, repeat the weakest part with one changed condition.

Take the other role or act as the reader. Change one realistic fact after the first attempt and delay correction until the message is complete.

Final role play · prove the skill

Clarify a new project request until you can state the user, purpose, must-have scope, constraint and measurable success criterion.

Success: complete the task independently and make the listener’s next action or understanding clear.

Do not supply wording during the final task. Score the three Progress Focus areas, give one precise improvement point and run a shorter retry.
