Choose, order, clarify, adapt, and solve the problem.
For learners: Use menu and spoken evidence to recommend, order, clarify, adapt, and solve routine restaurant problems.
For teachers: The mastery route integrates listening, menu reading, recommendation, ordering, clarification, a changed constraint, and an unsupported final restaurant interaction.
Read a menu, identify three diners’ needs, choose a suitable shared meal within budget, place and clarify the order, respond to an unavailable item, and resolve one bill problem independently.
For learners: A restaurant visit combines reading, listening, speaking and problem-solving. Success means keeping the group’s needs, budget and safety information clear when the situation changes.
For teachers: The lesson produces observable evidence from menu reading, detail listening, recommendation, ordering, clarification, adaptation and an unsupported final roleplay.
Keep transcripts and Thai support closed until needed. Ask for menu evidence after every claim. Do not confirm allergy safety unless the stated information supports it. Score only the unsupported Final Practice.
| Time | Teacher does | Student does | Required evidence |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0–3 | Frames the group decision. | Names purpose, limits and checks. | A decision plan. |
| 3–7 | Plays Audio 1 twice. | Records needs, quantities and budget. | An accurate diner profile. |
| 7–12 | Reveals the menu. | Matches dishes, totals the order and flags uncertainty. | Menu evidence. |
| 12–17 | Roleplays the server. | Recommends, orders and confirms. | A complete first order. |
| 17–23 | Plays Audio 2 and challenges the plan. | Summarises, checks and adapts. | A safe, affordable revision. |
| 23–30 | Runs a fresh visit and scores. | Manages order, change and bill issue. | Independent B1 mastery. |
A good order begins with people, limits and questions—not with your favourite dish.
Who is eating, and what must each person avoid or prefer?
How many starters, mains and drinks are needed?
What is the total budget, and what information needs staff confirmation?
Keep this stage quick. Accept useful predictions, but do not reveal the diner profile. Reinforce that the learner must check uncertainty rather than promise safety.
Listen first for the group plan. Listen again for each diner, the quantities, the budget and the required check.
There are three of us tonight. Mina is vegetarian and cannot eat peanuts. Dan would like chicken, and I prefer something mild. We can spend up to nine hundred baht altogether, including drinks. We would like one starter to share and three main dishes. Please check any allergy information with the restaurant rather than guessing.
Play once for the group plan and once for details. Ask the learner to correct their own notes before opening the transcript. Do not pre-teach every food word.
Match stated menu facts to the diner profile. Unknown kitchen safety remains unknown until staff confirm it.
| Item | Type and price | Menu information | Decision question |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cucumber salad | Shared starter · 100 baht | Vegetarian; shared kitchen | Can staff confirm the allergy procedure? |
| Vegetable curry | Main · 190 baht | Vegetarian; peanut-free ingredients; shared kitchen | Is it available and safely prepared? |
| Tomato pasta | Main · 200 baht | Vegetarian; no peanuts listed | Can staff confirm the kitchen procedure? |
| Chicken rice | Main · 220 baht | Grilled chicken; medium spice | Does Dan want the regular spice level? |
| Mild fish soup | Main · 200 baht | White fish; mild broth | Does it match the speaker’s preference? |
| Tofu noodle bowl | Main · 180 baht | Vegetarian; peanut sauce | Which diner must avoid this? |
| Water | Drink · 30 baht each | Still or sparkling | How many are needed? |
Require the learner to show the calculation and cite the menu. If they treat “peanut-free ingredients” as a complete safety guarantee, point back to “shared kitchen” and ask what must be confirmed.
Turn the evidence into a short recommendation, then order in a sequence the server can confirm.
For Mina, I’d recommend … because …
We’d like one … to share, followed by …
Could you confirm whether …? Could you repeat the total?
Repeat one quantity incorrectly so the learner must repair it. Do not supply the allergy-check question. Accept natural hesitation, but require a clear final confirmation.
A useful plan must change when availability or safety information changes.
I’m sorry, but the vegetable curry has sold out. We can offer the tofu noodle bowl instead. It is vegetarian, but the kitchen uses peanuts, so I cannot confirm that it is safe for a peanut allergy. The tomato pasta is prepared without peanuts, although I still need to check the kitchen procedure. Would you like a few minutes to change the order?
Play twice. Do not reveal the transcript before the learner revises the order. Ask “What changed, what remains uncertain, and what is the new total?” A responsible delay for staff confirmation is a valid response.
Close the transcripts and model language. Complete a fresh restaurant interaction from decision to problem resolution.
Three colleagues need one shared starter, three mains and three waters for no more than 850 baht. Arun avoids dairy, Bee wants a vegetarian dish, and Carla prefers mild food. The server will announce one unavailable dish after the first order. At the end, the bill includes an extra 60-baht juice that nobody ordered.
Score the first unsupported performance, then score the retry separately.
Target: 5/6 overall with FP = 2 and no zero. Use the lowest focus as the retry target.
Use the new diner card, not the worked group. Choose one unavailable item that forces a meaningful change. Let the learner notice the bill error. Record exact COM, VR and FP evidence, give one success and one next target, then allow one focused retry.
The CEFR Companion Volume informs the B1 focus on understanding straightforward factual input, explaining reasons, handling routine transactions and dealing with a complication.
