Why this lesson matters · เหตุผลที่เรียนบทนี้

For learners: Build ten high-frequency verb-complement chunks so A2 learners can talk about true plans, preferences, decisions and completed activities without guessing the following form.

For teachers: Meaning-first six-stage route: ten meaning choices, ten complete chunks, six explained repairs, dual-accent listening maps, true-answer planning, a six-turn exchange and one focused retry.

Your Goal

By the end of this lesson, you can control ten high-frequency verb patterns and use them to ask and answer about plans, preferences, decisions, and completed activities.

คำอธิบายภาษาไทย

ใช้ verb patterns ที่พบบ่อย 10 ชุดให้ถูกต้อง แล้วนำไปถามและตอบเรื่องแผน ความชอบ การตัดสินใจ และกิจกรรมที่ทำเสร็จจริงในบทสนทนาต่อเนื่อง

Why this lesson matters

The first verb usually controls the next form. Learning decide to go or enjoy cooking as one chunk helps you speak faster and avoids guessing between to and -ing.

ภาษาไทย: กริยาตัวแรกมักกำหนดรูปของกริยาถัดไป การจำเป็นชุดช่วยพูดได้เร็วและไม่ต้องเดาว่าควรใช้ to หรือ -ing

Teacher Lesson Plan

Teach each first verb with its following form and a true example. Do not ask learners to choose to or -ing from the second action alone.

Stage 1 · Match ten verb patterns to meaning

Start with what the speaker means, then retrieve the complete chunk.

  1. Read ten mini-messages and name the intended meaning.
  2. Choose the first verb before looking at the second action.
  3. Add one true action to each pattern.
  4. Say the whole chunk without pausing before the second form.
Finish evidenceTen meaning-to-pattern decisions with true actions.
Teacher Help · Stage 1

If learners translate only the first verb, ask what communicative purpose the whole chunk serves and request one true personal example.

Stage 2 · Build five to-infinitive and five -ing chunks

Keep the following form stable while subjects, time and actions change.

5 minutes
STUDENT TASK
Pattern familyFive target verbsForm check
verb + to + base verbwant · need · plan · decide · hopeto remains; second verb stays base form

question transferWhat do you want to…? / What do you enjoy…?do changes the first verb only
negative transferI don’t plan to… / I avoid…following pattern stays complete
  1. Build ten personal chunks: one for each target verb.
  2. Change five chunks from I to he, she or we.
  3. Turn four chunks into questions.
  4. Check the first verb and following form separately.
Check the two family rules

want/need/plan/decide/hope + to + base verb
enjoy/finish/avoid/practise/keep + verb-ing. Learn each first verb with its family.

Finish evidenceTen complete chunks plus four accurate questions.
Teacher Help · Stage 2

Use back-chaining for difficult chunks: go → to go → decide to go or cook → cooking → enjoy cooking. Then restore a real subject and time.

Stage 3 · Repair six following-form problems

Name the first verb that controls the repair.

5 minutes
STUDENT TASK

I want going early.I want to go early.want + to + base verb
She enjoys to cook.She enjoys cooking.enjoy + verb-ing
We decided stay home.We decided to stay home.decide needs to

I hope improving soon.I hope to improve soon.hope + to + base verb
  1. Underline the first verb in all six problems.
  2. State its pattern family before repairing.
  3. Repair the following form.
  4. Replace the final action with one true action while keeping the pattern.
Check the transfer

Changing the action does not change the family: hope to improve / hope to travel; finish writing / finish cleaning.

Finish evidenceSix explained repairs and six true transfer chunks.
Teacher Help · Stage 3

Give feedback on the controlling first verb, not only the wrong ending. Ask the learner to repeat the whole corrected chunk with a new action.

Stage 4 · Listen and map purpose, verb and action

Follow two accents and recover complete chunks without copying every word.

5 minutes
STUDENT TASK
British English · Amy

Weekend plans and completed tasks

Record one plan, one preference and one completed activity.

American English · Matthew

Learning decisions and habits

Record one decision, one practice habit and one hope.

PassRecordQuestion
1 · Meaningplan, preference, decision or completed activityWhat is true for the speaker?
2 · Chunkfirst verb + following formWhich family controls it?
3 · Follow-upone useful questionWhat would you ask next?
  1. Listen once and state the main plans or preferences.
  2. Listen again and write six complete verb chunks.
  3. Sort the chunks into the two form families.
  4. Retell one speaker’s information with three chunks.
Finish evidenceTwo listening maps, six recovered chunks and one short retell.
Teacher Help · Stage 4

Accent variety tests meaning transfer, not imitation. Ask for the purpose first, then replay for the exact first verb and following form. Audio never starts automatically.

Stage 5 · Plan six true connected turns

Use notes only so the exchange remains real and responsive.

5 minutes
STUDENT TASK

  1. Write key words only for six true turns.
  2. Use at least two to-infinitive and two -ing chunks.
  3. Include one decision and one completed activity.
  4. Partner checks whether every answer invites the next question.
Finish evidenceOne six-turn plan using four target chunks and a real follow-up.
Teacher Help · Stage 5

Remove full-sentence scripts. If an answer is too short, ask for one reason, time or detail before the partner forms the next question.

Stage 6 · Final Practice: ask, answer and retry

Keep the patterns accurate while responding to real information.

6 minutes
STUDENT TASK
FINAL PRACTICE

Plan → preference → decision → completed activity → follow-up → focused retry

  1. Complete a six-turn conversation with a partner.
  2. Use two accurate to-infinitive chunks and two accurate -ing chunks.
  3. Include one real decision and one completed activity.
  4. Ask one follow-up based on the partner’s actual answer.
  5. The partner repeats the four verb chunks they heard.
  6. Receive one target—meaning, form or real use—and retry only the weakest two turns.
Performance rule: Retrieve the first verb and its following form as one complete chunk.

Score the first independent performance

MEAN · MeaningTen pattern choices match plans, preferences, decisions, hopes, avoidance, practice, continuation and completed activities.
FORM · FormFive to-infinitive and five -ing patterns remain complete across statements and questions; six repair types are controlled.
USE · Real useThe six-turn exchange shares true information and includes an answer-based follow-up.
0 · Not yetFollowing forms are guessed and the exchange cannot continue.
1 · With supportThe exchange works after one prompt to retrieve a complete chunk or add a relevant follow-up.
2 · IndependentTen target chunks support a natural connected exchange through the focused retry.

Result: 0–2 Rebuild · 3–4 Developing · 5–6 A2 performance evidence.

Finish evidenceTen controlled chunks + six repairs + two listening maps + one six-turn exchange + one focused retry.
Teacher Help · Stage 6

Score the first independent exchange across MEAN, FORM and USE. Give one target only, then record whether the retry improves chunk retrieval or conversational connection.
