Venue comparison
Classify each relationship and identify the structure after every connector.

Distinguish concession from comparison and deliver a balanced recommendation.
For learners: Distinguish concession from comparison, transform six connector patterns, punctuate however accurately, and deliver one balanced recommendation.
For teachers: This B2 step turns accurate message relay into balanced argument connection. Learners identify logical relationships, control clause and noun-phrase patterns, punctuate however, respond to a limitation challenge, and protect the decision priority.

สำหรับครู: ขั้น B2 นี้ต่อยอดจากการส่งต่อข้อความอย่างแม่นยำไปสู่การเชื่อมเหตุผลอย่างสมดุล ผู้เรียนระบุความสัมพันธ์ทางความหมาย ควบคุมโครงสร้าง clause และ noun phrase ใช้ however พร้อมวรรคตอน ตอบข้อทักท้วงเรื่องข้อจำกัด และรักษาเกณฑ์ตัดสินใจให้ชัด
By the end of this lesson, you can distinguish concession from comparison, transform six connector patterns, punctuate however accurately, and deliver one balanced recommendation.

Recommendations become credible when they compare options and acknowledge real limitations without losing the main decision. Different connectors express different relationships and require different clause or noun-phrase structures.
ภาษาไทย: คำแนะนำจะน่าเชื่อถือเมื่อเปรียบเทียบตัวเลือกและยอมรับข้อจำกัดจริงโดยยังคงข้อสรุปหลัก Connector แต่ละกลุ่มสื่อความสัมพันธ์ต่างกันและต้องตามด้วยโครงสร้างที่ต่างกัน
Teach logical relationship before connector choice. Make clause boundaries visible before scoring structure and however punctuation.
| Stage | Teacher move | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| 1 · Meaning | Classify concession, comparison and turn. | Twelve labels |
| 2 · Form | Transform six concession frames. | Six patterns |
| 3 · Punctuation | Build whereas and however links. | Eight contrasts |
| 4 · Listen | Recover argument movement. | Two maps |
| 5 · Plan | Balance option and limitation. | Recommendation map |
| 6 · Perform | Score MEAN/FORM/USE and retry. | Recommendation + retry |
Decide whether the second idea is an unexpected limitation or a direct difference between two options.
| Relationship | Meaning question | Typical connectors |
|---|---|---|
| concession | What remains true despite a difficulty? | although, even though, despite, in spite of |
| comparison/contrast | How do two people, things or choices differ? | whereas, while |
| sentence-level turn | How does the next claim limit or redirect the argument? | however |
| simple opposition | Are two equal clauses directly opposed? | but |
Teach the logical relationship before the connector. Concession preserves a main claim despite a difficulty; whereas/while sets two comparable subjects or options against each other.
Change clause-based and noun-based frames without changing which claim is central.
| Connector | Required structure | Example |
|---|---|---|
| although / even though | connector + subject + verb | Although the venue is smaller, it is better equipped. |
| despite / in spite of | connector + noun / pronoun / verb-ing | Despite its smaller size, it is better equipped. |
| despite the fact that | connector + full clause | Despite the fact that it is smaller, it is better equipped. |
| but | independent clause + but + independent clause | It is smaller, but it is better equipped. |
Require a full clause after although/even though and a noun phrase, pronoun or verb-ing after despite/in spite of. Check that the recommended claim remains the main clause.
Use whereas for direct comparison and however to turn between complete sentences or clauses.
| Pattern | Punctuation | Example |
|---|---|---|
| A…, whereas B… | comma before whereas | A is cheaper, whereas B is faster. |
| Whereas A…, B… | comma after opening clause | Whereas A is cheaper, B is faster. |
| Sentence. However, sentence. | full stop + comma | A is cheaper. However, B is more reliable. |
| Clause; however, clause. | semicolon + comma | A is cheaper; however, B is more reliable. |
However is a conjunctive adverb, not a coordinating conjunction. Separate two independent clauses with a full stop or semicolon, then use a comma after however.
Make the clause boundaries visible before teaching punctuation. A comma alone cannot safely join two independent clauses with however.
Recover the relationship, structure, connector position and recommendation.
Classify each relationship and identify the structure after every connector.
Notice the flexible position and punctuation of however.
| Pass | Record | Question |
|---|---|---|
| 1 · Relationship | concession, comparison or turn | What is the speaker doing? |
| 2 · Structure | clause or noun phrase | What follows the connector? |
| 3 · Decision | main recommendation + limitation | Which point carries more weight? |
The reviewed neural accents support recognition. Score the argument relationship first, then connector structure and punctuation in the learner’s written reconstruction.
Present advantages, acknowledge limitations and keep the decision criterion visible.
| Recommendation move | Required content | Connector option |
|---|---|---|
| main contrast | option A versus option B | whereas / while |
| limitation | problem that does not cancel the choice | although / despite |
| argument turn | important counterpoint | however |
| decision | recommended option + priority | therefore / for this reason |
| condition or safeguard | how to manage the limitation | provided that / if |
A balanced recommendation is not a list of connectors. Every connector must advance a decision: compare options, acknowledge a real limitation or redirect the argument.
Deliver a recommendation that remains clear when a partner challenges the limitation.
Result: 0–2 Rebuild · 3–4 Developing · 5–6 B2 performance evidence.
Score the first independent recommendation. Give one target only, then record whether the retry improves logical relationship, connector form or decision balance.
You can now distinguish concession from comparison, transform six connector patterns, punctuate however and deliver a balanced recommendation. Continue through the Dynamic Learning Graph below.
