Why this lesson matters

Recommendations become credible when they compare options and acknowledge real limitations without losing the main decision. Different connectors express different relationships and require different clause or noun-phrase structures.

ภาษาไทย: คำแนะนำจะน่าเชื่อถือเมื่อเปรียบเทียบตัวเลือกและยอมรับข้อจำกัดจริงโดยยังคงข้อสรุปหลัก Connector แต่ละกลุ่มสื่อความสัมพันธ์ต่างกันและต้องตามด้วยโครงสร้างที่ต่างกัน

Teacher Lesson Plan

Teach logical relationship before connector choice. Make clause boundaries visible before scoring structure and however punctuation.

Stage 1 · Distinguish concession from comparison

Decide whether the second idea is an unexpected limitation or a direct difference between two options.

STUDENT TASK
RelationshipMeaning questionTypical connectors
concessionWhat remains true despite a difficulty?although, even though, despite, in spite of

  1. Classify twelve pairs as concession, comparison or sentence-level turn.
  2. Underline the positive claim and circle the limitation.
  3. Name the two items being compared where applicable.
  4. Select one connector family for each relationship before building the sentence.
Finish evidenceTwelve relationship labels and twelve justified connector-family choices.
Teacher Help · Stage 1

Teach the logical relationship before the connector. Concession preserves a main claim despite a difficulty; whereas/while sets two comparable subjects or options against each other.

Stage 2 · Transform six concession patterns

Change clause-based and noun-based frames without changing which claim is central.

5 minutes
STUDENT TASK
ConnectorRequired structureExample
although / even thoughconnector + subject + verbAlthough the venue is smaller, it is better equipped.
despite / in spite ofconnector + noun / pronoun / verb-ingDespite its smaller size, it is better equipped.
despite the fact thatconnector + full clauseDespite the fact that it is smaller, it is better equipped.
butindependent clause + but + independent clauseIt is smaller, but it is better equipped.
  1. Transform six source pairs through all four concession frames.
  2. Keep the main recommendation claim unchanged.
  3. Convert a clause to a noun phrase or verb-ing form after despite.
  4. Repair four fragment errors after although or despite.
  5. Explain when even though signals a stronger unexpected contrast.
Finish evidenceSix meaning-preserving transformations and four fragment repairs.
Teacher Help · Stage 2

Require a full clause after although/even though and a noun phrase, pronoun or verb-ing after despite/in spite of. Check that the recommended claim remains the main clause.

Stage 3 · Build comparisons and punctuate however

Use whereas for direct comparison and however to turn between complete sentences or clauses.

STUDENT TASK
PatternPunctuationExample

Whereas A…, B…comma after opening clauseWhereas A is cheaper, B is faster.

Clause; however, clause.semicolon + commaA is cheaper; however, B is more reliable.
  1. Build four direct comparisons with whereas.
  2. Connect four argument turns with however.
  3. Punctuate initial, medial and between-sentence positions accurately.
  4. Repair four comma splices or fragments.
  5. Choose whereas or however by explaining the relationship and sentence structure.
Check however

However is a conjunctive adverb, not a coordinating conjunction. Separate two independent clauses with a full stop or semicolon, then use a comma after however.

Finish evidenceEight connected contrasts and four punctuation repairs.
Teacher Help · Stage 3

Make the clause boundaries visible before teaching punctuation. A comma alone cannot safely join two independent clauses with however.

Stage 4 · Listen and map the argument turn

Recover the relationship, structure, connector position and recommendation.

5 minutes
STUDENT TASK
British English · Brian

Venue comparison

Classify each relationship and identify the structure after every connector.

American English · Joanna

System recommendation

Notice the flexible position and punctuation of however.

PassRecordQuestion
1 · Relationshipconcession, comparison or turnWhat is the speaker doing?
2 · Structureclause or noun phraseWhat follows the connector?
3 · Decisionmain recommendation + limitationWhich point carries more weight?
  1. Listen once and record the recommended option in each clip.
  2. Listen again and map every connector to its logical relationship.
  3. Recover the clause or noun-phrase structure that follows.
  4. Reformulate one concession and one comparison with a different accurate pattern.
Finish evidenceTwo argument maps and two meaning-preserving reformulations.
Teacher Help · Stage 4

The reviewed neural accents support recognition. Score the argument relationship first, then connector structure and punctuation in the learner’s written reconstruction.

Stage 5 · Plan a balanced recommendation

Present advantages, acknowledge limitations and keep the decision criterion visible.

  1. Choose two realistic venues, systems, plans or services.
  2. Plan one direct comparison and two concessions.
  3. Use however to introduce the strongest counterpoint.
  4. Rank the decision criterion and recommend one option.
  5. Add one safeguard that manages the limitation without hiding it.
Finish evidenceA five-move recommendation map with concession, comparison and a punctuated argument turn.
Teacher Help · Stage 5

A balanced recommendation is not a list of connectors. Every connector must advance a decision: compare options, acknowledge a real limitation or redirect the argument.

Stage 6 · Final Practice: balance, challenge and recommend

Deliver a recommendation that remains clear when a partner challenges the limitation.

6 minutes
STUDENT TASK
FINAL PRACTICE

Compare → concede → turn → recommend → challenge → retry

  1. Deliver a 90-second recommendation comparing two options.
  2. Use one whereas/while comparison and two accurate concession patterns.
  3. Use however with correct clause boundary and punctuation in the written notes.
  4. Recommend one option and state the decision priority.
  5. Your partner challenges one limitation: “Why choose it despite that problem?”
  6. Answer, receive one MEAN, FORM or USE target and retry only the highest-risk section.
Recommendation model: “Venue A is closer to the station, whereas Venue B has better equipment. Although Venue B is more expensive, it would reduce setup risk. Venue A is available earlier; however, its smaller stage limits the programme. I recommend Venue B despite the higher cost, provided that we confirm the final budget today.”

Score the first independent performance

MEAN · MeaningThe listener can distinguish direct comparison, concession, counterpoint and final decision priority.
FORM · FormClause/noun structures and however punctuation remain accurate across six connector patterns.
USE · Real useThe learner gives a balanced recommendation, answers a limitation challenge and retries one weak section.
0 · Not yetThe relationship or punctuation makes the recommendation difficult to follow.
1 · With supportThe recommendation works after one relationship, structure or punctuation prompt.
2 · IndependentComparison, concessions, however turn, challenge answer and decision work without a model.

Result: 0–2 Rebuild · 3–4 Developing · 5–6 B2 performance evidence.

Finish evidenceSix transformed patterns + accurate however punctuation + balanced recommendation + challenge answer + focused retry.
Teacher Help · Stage 6

Score the first independent recommendation. Give one target only, then record whether the retry improves logical relationship, connector form or decision balance.
